Go To

The twenty-fifth episode of the first season of Dennis the Menace (1986).

A Couple of Coo-Coos

Mr. Wilson brings home a few carrier pigeons for the purpose of racing them. He and Dennis take one of them, Lulu, on an outing to see if she can find the way back to his house, and the mission becomes for real after Dennis locks them out of Mr. Wilson's car with the keys still inside. Mr. Wilson decides to put a message on Lulu in hopes of getting help. However, he gets into various mishaps when he's chased by a bull and gets stuck in a tree. A rescue party arrives as they get Mr. Wilson safely down and Mrs. Wilson and Alice arrive. He thinks Lulu had returned home to give them the message, but the women found out the predicament only because they were watching the news on TV. Lulu only manages to return to Mr. Wilson, landing on his head and never having sent the message.

The Cloneheads

Dennis gets into PeeBee's latest invention, a clone booth, and it makes four duplicates of the boy. They cause havoc for his parents, Margaret, and Mr. Wilson before PeeBee and the real Dennis are able to get them back to the booth and de-clone them, leaving them as cardboard images. When the boys return to Mr. Wilson's house to show them what happened, he faints when he sees five Dennises!

Nothing But the Tooth

Joey needs to have a tooth pulled out, but is afraid of the dentist. PeeBee invents a robot tooth puller, but that makes Joey even more afraid. He runs off and the chase continues all the way to the dentist's office. Joey tries to run away again, but when Dennis opens the door on him, the tooth is out and he didn't really feel any pain. When the dentist sees Dennis, she reminds him he's due for a checkup and takes him in to do so, making him afraid and leaving Joey and PeeBee laughing.

"A Couple of Coo-Coos" provides examples of:

  • Brutish Bulls: When Dennis tries to rescue Lulu, he gets chased up a tree by Brutus, a bull who is owned by a little girl. Fortunately for him, the little girl is able to scold Brutus and assure Mr. Wilson that he is really a big old softie underneath his brutish exteriror.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mr. Wilson. When he takes Lulu, one of his pigeons to the park, Dennis tags along. He gets locked out of his car with the keys still inside it, flies into an apple tree and has apples fall on him when he tries unsuccessfully to open his car door, Lulu gets stuck in a tree when she tries to deliver a message to Mrs. Wilson, and when Mr. Wilson tries to rescue her, he rips his pants climbing over the fence, gets chased by Brutus the bull, and clings for his life when the branch he's on breaks.
  • Coconut Meets Cranium: The apple variant; when Mr. Wilson tries unsuccessfully to open his car door after Dennis locks it, he flies into an apple tree, causing apples to fall from it, one of which hits him on the head.
  • Ironic Echo: When Mr. Wilson takes Lulu to the park, Dennis assures her that Mr. Wilson may look mean, but inside, he's a big softie. When Mr. Wilson is chased up a tree by Brutus, the little girl who owns him tells Mr. Wilson that Brutus may look mean, but is really a big old softie. Upon hearing this, Mr. Wilson asks himself why that sounds so familiar.
  • Instant Messenger Pigeon: Played with; Mr. Wilson takes Lulu to the park so she can find her way back to his house, but when Dennis locks the doors to his car, he gets Lulu to send a message to Mrs. Wilson informing her of what happened. Lulu gets stuck in a tree, and Mr. Wilson gets stuck up there himself when he sets her free. At the end of the episode, Mr. Wilson is rescued by the fire department, but not because of Lulu's message; Martha and Alice were watching the 3:00 news.
  • The Key Is Behind the Lock: Dennis accidentally locks Mr. Wilson out of his car when they arrive at the park, as Alice had always told him he can't bee too careful. As Mr. Wilson left his keys inside his car, he is unable to unlock it.
  • Literal-Minded: When Mr. Wilson tells Dennis he's going to race his pigeons, Dennis imagines Mr. Wilson and his pigeons dressed in exercise clothes running against each other.
  • Shout-Out: This episode begins with Mr. Wilson humming the Inspector Gadget theme song as he drives his car.
  • Splitting Pants: When Mr. Wilson tries to climb over a fence to get Lulu back after she flies into a tree trying to deliver a message to Mrs. Wilson, he accidentally rips his pants, exposing his underwear.
  • You Are Fat: When Dennis thinks Mr. Wilson is going to eat his carrier pigeons, he begs him not to, saying he's fat enough as it is.

"The Cloneheads" provides examples of:

  • Circling Birdies: Miniature Dennis heads spin around Ruff's head when Ruff faints upon seeing Dennis' clones.
  • Eek, a Mouse!!: Henry does not approve of Dennis bringing mice in the house, namely Benson, the mouse he tried to brefriend. However, Dennis' clones don't know this, and they bring mice into the house against Henry's wishes.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: This exchange between Henry and Alice when they see Dennis' clones playing baseball.
Alice: What's wrong, dear? You look so strange.
Henry: Quick! How many Dennises do you see out there?
Alice: Only four, dear. (Beat) Only four?!
(Alice faints and tosses her laundry basket onto Henry's head)
  • Go to Your Room!: Henry sends one of Dennis' clones to Dennis' bedroom after the clone says he never said anything to him about not bringing mice in the house, having accused the clone of lying to him.
  • In the Dreaming Stage of Grief: When Mr. Wilson sees Dennis' clones in his kitchen, he tries to assure himself that he's just dreaming (since he had nightmares about Dennis when he was sleeping). When one of Dennis' clones finds Mr. Wilson's cookie jar, Mr. Wilson says "It's not a dream, it's a nightmare!"
  • Irritation Nightmare: When Mr. Wilson tries to sleep, he has nightmares about Dennis. Dennis' clones showing up at his house don't help this situation.
  • Send in the Clones: In this episode, PeeBee invents the clone booth, a cloning machine that makes clones of Dennis, as well as Benson, the mouse he caught.

"Nothing But the Tooth" provides examples of:

  • Absurd Phobia: When Dennis tells Joey that the Tooth Fairy will give him money for his loose tooth, Joey reveals that he is even more afraid of the Tooth Fairy than he is of the dentist.
  • Coconut Meets Cranium: This episode features the apple variant; when the football that Joey swats out of Dennis' hand flies into a tree Mr. Wilson is sleeping under, an apple falls off it and hits Mr. Wilson on his head.
  • The Dentist Episode: In this episode, Joey is afraid of going to the dentist to get a loose tooth pulled, so Dennis has to help him overcome his fear.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: Dennis has PeeBee invent a tooth-extracting robot to help Joey overcome his fear of dentists. When they test it out on a sleeping Mr. Wilson, the robot takes his dentures. Mr. Wilson doesn't realize this until he tries to eat an apple, and when he sees the robot with his dentures, he chases after it, only for the robot to hoist him by the seat of his pants with his own dentures.
  • Here We Go Again!: After Joey overcomes his fear of the dentist, Dennis tries to run away when he finds out that he has a dental appointment.
