Recap / Death Battle SE Excalibur VS Raiden

Go To

Wiz: Fine, if I had to pick, I'd go with the very first Warframe ever created, the death-dealing techno-organic ninja, Excalibur!
Boomstick: You mean he's a cyborg ninja? Like Raiden from Metal Gear?

It's a late night at the Death Battle HQ, as Wiz is up doing some research, specifically playing through Warframe, much to Boomstick's surprise as it's supposed to be their day off, as he had arrived through... Rather uncertain means. As they continue to converse, Wiz brings up his favorite Warframe, Excalibur, who Boomstick is quite quick to compare to Raiden.

[This recap is a work in progress]

Boomstick: Excalibur had the metal and the gear to make Jack R.I.P.!
Wiz: The winner is Excalibur... ha, told you so!

"Excalibur VS Raiden" contains examples of:

  • Breaking Old Trends: Wiz and Boomstick do more than just analysis here and go out of their way to actually intervene during the fight itself, if only briefly.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: Raiden's loss to Excalibur not only makes him the first Konami owned character to lose since Bomberman's battle with Dig Dug in season one, his loss also causes the Metal Gear franchise to lose a third consecutive win after Snake's battle with Sam Fisher and Raiden's previous battle with Wolverine.
  • The Cameo: Both Jocelyn and DUMMI are seen on the television screen in the office, part of a music playlist video that's a parody of various "Lofi beats to study/relax to" videos.
    • Meanwhile at the end of the fight, the newly finished Warframe's shadow comes into frame, with its shadow very likely indicating it's Atlas Prime.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: The episode's formula falls more in line with Macho Man Vs Kool-Aid Man's formula, with Wiz and Boomstick having different segueways into the characters as well as how the episode begins with it being a day off at the office, and Wiz and Boomstick both taking sides, Wiz rooting for Excalibur and Boomstick rooting for Raiden. There's also the fact that Wiz and Boomstick interrupt the fight as its going on, but unlike in Macho Man Vs Kool-Aid Man where it's just for more trivia, the two directly try to influence the fight in their rooted-for character's favor for a brief moment.
  • Graceful Loser: At first, Boomstick is not this as he insists Raiden's infinite ammo should have played an important factor. As the post-fight analysis continues, he concedes and admits Excalibur's tech and potential strength was better.
  • Hidden Depths: To Wiz's surprise, Boomstick pronounces the French name of Raiden's polearm, L'Etranger, correctly.
  • Irony: Wiz, the scientific genius who built his own robotic arm among numerous other impossible devices, apparently uses an old and beaten-up computer for conducting research. It even has duct tape on it and an entire chunk missing, wires coming out of the hole.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Raiden's High-frequency weapons are both the most dangerous weapons in his arsenal and could easily kill Excalibur if the Warframe isn't careful. Thanks to the Lotus' analysis and observations, Excalibur manages to disable his weapons with Glaxion and give it a better chance.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Boomstick references a few memetic lines from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, such as "Nanomachines, son!" and "Don't fuck with this senator!"
    • When Excalibur runs out of ammo, Raiden chuckles and points a thumb at his Infinity Wig, remarking "Infinite ammo!", a direct reference to Solid Snake doing the same in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
  • Power Nullifier: Thanks to Glaxion, Excalibur was able to slow down Raiden's molecular movement, slowing down both him and his high frequency blade, causing it to lose its lethality against its foe.
  • Self-Deprecation: Boomstick sums up his and Wiz's job as them essentially banging action figures together.
  • Serious Business: Unsurprisingly, given the series' nature, the fight happens because Wiz and Boomstick refuse to concede one character is better than the other and decide to settle things the old fashioned way.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: The battle ends on one of these between Excalibur's Exalted Blade, and Raiden's Murasama which has been disabled by Excalibur's Glaxion seconds before, with Excalibur coming out on top and cutting Raiden clean in half.
