Justice League Dark is the thirty fourth Episode in DC Universe Online, bringing the focus to the supernatural forces . This episode introduces new characters such as Mordru, Tala, and Steve Trevor.
Summary
Gotham has fallen into chaos following an invasion of demons, with an demonic entity waiting to devour it. Now, John Constantine sets out to form a team of supernatural heroes and gather powerful artifacts to stop it.Tropes
- Arc Villain: Mordru.
- A Day in the Limelight: Constantine goes from being the one who introduces Artifacts to the main focus of the story.
- All Your Powers Combined: This was the plan to empower Shazam in order to take on Mordru. However, Constantine had other ideas.
- Badass Normal: Steve Trevor, as usual. He helps the players take on vampires, werewolves, sorcerers and a Lord of Chaos even without any powers. Batwoman also counts as she directly participates in the events of the Fellowship of the Arcane raid.
- Big Labyrinthine Building: The House of Mystery from its long hallways and various rooms to the many sections it has that contains a variety of magical artifacts and spell components.
- Buried Alive: Briefings concerning Mordru reveals he has taphophobia, specifically a fear of this trope. He apparently developed this after having been sealed this way in the past.
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: The players will have done this just by virtue of defeating the final boss, the Harbinger of the Devourer.
- Drunk with Power: Zatanna cautions against this after Constantine, who interfered with the ritual empowering Shazam, collects nigh-ultimate magical power in the Ibistick, a magical artifact. It's subverted in that while he doesn't go mad with power he still runs off with it to "settle some debts."
- Eldritch Abomination: The Harbinger of the Devourer.
- Eldritch Location: Again, The House of Mystery. It even acts hostile to the players in its own way through traps, misdirection and illusion, but it does that in order to protect the artifacts and spells inside.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Klarion relents and gives the players a lead on the situation after Mordru betrays him by trying to steal the souls of the people in Limbo Town. While he may have engaged in the events for the sake of chaos, harming his citizens is a line even he won't cross.
- Malicious Misnaming: Shazam constantly refers to Constantine as "Con-Job." Even the game gets on this as the hairstyle in the episode vendor that is based on him is called "Con Job hairstyle." Likewise, Constantine often refers to Shazam as "Sparkles."
- Sanity Meter: The final stage has a Madness Level meter that steadily goes up the more you fight. While it can increase your offensive stats it comes with a constant decrease in health that gets worse the higher your Madness Level gets. Thankfully Shazam can be interacted with occasionally to use his powers to keep your Madness in check.
- Sequel Hook: Constantine keeps the power obtained from the magical forces from earlier to go settle some debts.
- Tentacled Terror: The Harbinger of the Devourer is practically made up of the things. Its portal over Gotham has its tentacles squirming out of it and it uses other tentacles to grab up citizens and attack the players during the final confrontation.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Nobody likes John Constantine. Even Shazam states that even he knows not to trust him.
- Unexpected Gameplay Change: The final raid largely becomes a platforming stage where all modes of movement are disabled save for basic running and jumping. This forces players to jump across floating rocks and occasionally into floating rune platforms (and a few of those even move) in order to make it to the boss fights. Falling at any point is a KO but there are checkpoints should any player make it to the end of a section, creating a rally portal others can use to catch up.
- You Have Failed Me: The Devourer does what it's named for to Tala, Felix Faust, and Mordru after each of them are defeated by the players.
