Recap / Citation Needed S 8 E 6 The Sweater Curse And Clothing Controversies

Go To

The Grand Finale for Citation Needed, featuring the Sweater Curse and far too many knitting gags.

Article of Conversation: Sweater Curse.

Tropes:

  • Cargo Ship: Gary gets a point for guessing that the curse can happen by the knitter having too much dedication to their sweater, and pestering their S/O.
  • End of an Era: This is the last episode of Citation Needed to release, lasting from March 2014 to November 2018, being replaced by Two of These People Are Lying.
  • Grand Finale: Multiple jokes are mentioned at this being their last episode, such as Gary not wanting to end thee series on Jumpers, and the amount of puns being the reason they're finishing the show.
  • Historical In-Joke: Gary mentions King Henry's six wives (Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived) for the six mechanisms for the "Sweater Curse" happening.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Everyone at one point tries to one-up each others' knitting puns.
Gary: Knitting gags this is what you came for, isn't it?!
  • A Rare Sentence: Inverted:
Gary: Can I say, at no point in humanity's awful beheading history has everyone looked at it and gone: "Would that work with a poncho?".
  • Running Gag: Chris being called the "Relationship coroner" when describing how one's love life died. Inverted later on as Gary is mentioned to be the "Relationship defibrillator" when trying to spice up a couple's love life.
  • Self-Deprecation: Matt points out that the "Sweater Curse" sounds like a Goosebumps book, and later mentions that Matt calling them novels really says a lot about their reading habits:
Matt: Yes, one of the great works of literature is "Say Cheese and Die".
  • Shout-Out:
    • To one of the Goosebumps books; Say Cheese and Die!.
    • Gary, fittingly, finishes the show by waving and saying "I don't wanna go!"; this was what David Tennant said when he ended his tenure as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who.
  • Slasher Smile: Matt's smile when he says "It's a present...", accompanied by a creepy voice.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: Tom, when discussing "clothing controversies", reacts quite badly to a "revealing photo" of something he saw on Wikipedia, Gary quips:
    Gary: ...saves for later.
