Recap / Chowder S 1 E 35 The Meach Harvest

Go To

The catering company gets an order for a Meach Pie, which Mung is afraid to make.

  • Annoying Laugh: The Queen Meach snorts when she giggles.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Off-screen, this happens to Chowder (who stresses he needs his arms for cooking). Mung says that this makes Meaches even angrier.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Quiet a common thing in Chowder, although the meaches also happen to be killer fruits.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: After Mung tells his tale of being attacked by Meaches for 25 years, he tells Chowder about what the meaches did after they finally stopped:
Mung: They broke my spirit, and all my bones... They even ate my hair!
  • Bedsheet Ghost: The second way that Chowder and Shnitzel try to get past the Meaches.
  • Big "NO!": When Mung hears an order for Mince Meach Pie, as it reminds him of his trauma. Mung also gives one of these in the flashback when he sees that the Meaches have eaten his hair.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Chowder when Mung sends him and Shnitzel to go face the Meaches rather than do so himself.
  • Broken Pedestal: With Mung a complete mess and refusing to make the pie, Chowder rips up his poster of him. When it looks like Mung is going to face his fears, Chowder reveals he taped the poster back together, only to rip it up again when Mung sends him and Shnitzel out to do the dirty work.
  • Disguised in Drag: Another way that Chowder and Shnitzel try to get past the Meaches is by dressing up as girl scouts.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Mung saves Chowder and Shnitzel by insulting the Meaches' mothers as dumb and ugly. One of the Meaches says Mung can't get away with that.
  • Face Your Fears: Parodied. Mung Daal refuses to harvest the queen meach due to his fear of the meaches guarding her whilst Chowder keeps trying to encourage him to face his fears. This would be considered playing the trope straight, except for the fact that meaches are vicious bloodthirsty living fruits with More Teeth than the Osmond Family that maul anything that gets within 100 yards of them en masse. He has good reason to be afraid of them. Lampshaded at the end of the episode.
Mung: Thank you Chowder for giving me the courage to foolishly face my entirely rational fear!
  • Flashback: Double subverted. When Chowder asks Mung about making the mince meach pie, the scene is apparently about to start a flashback regarding Mung's past with the dish, only for Mung to put a stop to it because he doesn't want to relive his Trauma Button. It's only when Chowder asks if the pie tastes bad and wants to eat it after hearing how delicious it is that Mung finally explains why he doesn't want to make the dish, with the flashback occurring as he does so (much to Chowder's delight).
  • Hope Spot: When Chowder’s plan to ask politely for Queen Meach to come with them works, it looks like they’ll be able to leave without any further trouble. Then Chowder gloats out loud about the Meaches falling for it, leading the Meaches to attack Chowder and Schnitzel.
  • Ignoring by Singing: In order to distract himself from Chowder and Schnitzel being beaten up by the Meaches, Mung turns on the car's radio and starts singing the theme song of the show.
  • Ironic Echo: After the customer mockingly calls Mung a crybaby, Mung gets to throw his words right back at him when the customer ends up being attacked by the meaches at the end of the episode.
  • Jerkass: The customer childishly insults Mung when he refuses to make the order and continues to do it when returning to pick it up.
  • King Mook: The Queen Meach's only physical differences from the other meaches are her henin, lipstick and beauty mark.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After eating the Meach Pie, the customer is wished good luck by Mung. He's confused by this and is promptly attacked by meaches.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: What convinces Mung to go on a meach hunt (but not enough to actually face his fear) is when the customer calls him a "scared little poopy baby".
  • Not So Above It All: As Chowder keeps continually asking Mung why he's afraid of the Meaches, Shnitzel ends up joining in.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Mung acknowledges how much of a grudge Meaches possess when their queen is taken. They are so enraged, they constantly attack him everywhere he goes for 25 years.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: After Mung faces his fears and saves the day, Chowder calls him a hero and reveals he taped the poster back together.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After a few failed attempts to get past the meach guards, Chowder asks Mung if he ever tried asking nicely. Mung admits he never actually thought of that, having been too afraid of being attacked by the meaches to remember his manners. It surprisingly works, and they probably would have gotten out of there without further trouble... if Chowder hadn't foolishly gloated that the meaches fell for it.
  • Trauma Button: Meaches are savage fruit creatures that Mung is deathly afraid of, and for good reason. After taking their queen and creating Meach Pie, the other meaches began attacking him for 25 years straight! He claims he was bald because of it, and has since stayed clear of them. Heading to the site for an order, he has Chowder and Schnitzel retrieve one for him.
  • Unexplained Recovery: Despite having been chopped up, and made into a pie fifty years prior to the episode's time period, the Queen Meach is still alive. Although, it could be inferred that she regenerates from the meach tree. She is a plant after all.
