Recap / Chainsaw Man Season 1 Episode 12

Go To

Aki confronts Sawatari and the Ghost Devil, along with his memories of Himeno. Meanwhile, Power splits off from Denji right before he faces off with Samurai Sword.

The ending theme for this episode is "Fight Song" by Eve.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Deviation: In the manga, when Denji notices a civilian still on the train, he shields her from being collateral damage as Katana Man charges at them both. Here, he takes note of her presence and just awkwardly asks his enemy for a time out. He does try to lean over and block any attacks coming her way, which is why his arm was blasted off, but since his chainsaws were still in motion, he couldn't get too close to her without risking slicing her with his blades.
  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • Denji's fight with Samurai Sword has two added scenes of them clashing blades, first on the roof of a building and then on top of the train.
    • The manga implied that the Hayakawa household held a victory party only by Denji waking up afterward, which is expanded into a full montage the credits play over. Afterward, but before Denji's dream, we're shown Aki smoking the "Easy revenge!" cigarette, which was only implied to have happened off-screen in the manga.
  • Adaptation Explanation Extrication: Katana Man's expression of surprise that Denji blocked his Signature Move is left in the anime while Denji actually doing so happens offscreen.
  • Adapted Out: In the manga, there is a scene of Denji and Katana Man transforming into their Devil forms (in which Katana Man is already in his Finishing Move stance) before they jump out of the window. The anime jumps directly to the two jumping out of the window, possibly to make more time for the actual action.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Katana Man manages to cut both of Denji's arms during their fight. Denji gets better, however.
  • Call-Back: Denji recalls Kishibe's words in episode 10 when Katana Man presumes he won, only for him to be cut in half with Denji's hidden chainsaw leg.
Denji: Didn't your gramps teach you? Prey should never trust what a hunter says!
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Reze, the focus of the next story arc, appears in The Stinger. This story arc would be announced as The Movie one year later.
  • Finale Credits: The Season Finale diverges from the varied credits of the other episodes by having no out-of-universe credits sequence, instead showing them over a montage.
  • Good-Times Montage: We see Denji, Power, and Aki happily grocery shopping, readying themselves for the evening, and enjoying a meal.
  • Groin Attack:
    • Denji splits Katana Man vertically in two with a chainsaw-powered kick from the nads up, though apparently so fast the target didn't even realise it.
    • When Katana Man is apprehended, Denji thinks of a contest to do with Aki as they wait for the police to arrive: both of them kick Katana Man's groin, and whoever makes him scream the loudest wins.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Katana Man is cut in half by Denji's chainsaw in his leg. Surprisingly, he gets better. Denji theorizes it's because he has the same Healing Factor as he does.
  • Not So Above It All: At first, Aki refuses to participate in Denji's groin kicking "contest" because he believes Himeno wouldn't want that. Around a minute later he decides to do it in Himeno's memory anyways.
  • Off with Her Head!:
    • After repressing his fear of the Ghost Devil thanks to Himeno's advice, Aki promptly cuts off its head.
    • Sawatari is decapitated by the Snake Devil after she's captured alive and before the Devil Hunters manage to interrogate her. Kobeni has the expected reaction.
  • The Stinger: There are two scenes after the credits.
    • Denji has the same dream the first episode began on, with Pochita's voice telling him not to open the door.
    • An outdoor scene previews the then-unannounced Reze Arc movie, showing vague flashes of a woman with dark purple hair as she asks Denji about "The Town Mouse & the Country Mouse".
  • Wacky Sound Effect: A boxing bell ring can be heard as Denji and Aki kick Katana Man's groin. This is also a Continuity Nod as the same sound effect also played while Denji kicked Aki's groin during the second episode.
