Recap / Centaurworld S1E5: It's Hidin' Time

Go To

The herd is traveling along a path leading to the top of a butte, Horse carrying the sleeping Wammawink and the rest complaining about being hungry. When they reach the top of the butte, all they find are a group of taurs that sing a warning about a beartaur before hiding. It soon starts to rain, causing the group to seek shelter in a cave. This cave turns out to contain a pair of suspiciously human-looking boots, but before Horse can ponder their significance the group is attacked by the cave's resident — a colossal beartaur. Wammawink quickly defeats it — without first waking up — but now the beartaur's inert form blocks the exit.

The herd tries to find another opening, but the cave dead-ends in a rocky wall covered in cave paintings depicting a group of centaurs and human riders facing off against a horde of horned monsters — the minotaurs that Horse remembers fighting in her world. The herd still needs to leave the cave, and a disagreement over how to do this turns into a shouting match between Horse and Ched that wakes the beartaur up. Horse buys the others time to flee, but is soon caught herself. The herd gathers outside the cave, dragging the still-sleeping Wammawink along, and panics over what to do about Horse. They manage to wake Wammawink up, and she heads off to rescue Horse.

The beartaur turns out to be a nerdy figurine collector who has been using the cave painting as inspiration for his models, and intends to add Horse to his collection by sealing her in varnish. Horse manages to trick the beartaur in leaving by claiming inaccurate things about the minotaurs, sending him off in a huff to double-check the paintings, and when he returns he finds that Horse has spilled the varnish onto his figures. He flies in a rage and, in the confusion, Horse runs for it and flees out of the cave and past the just-arrived herd.

Having escape the beartaur, Horse is however very startled to find that her mane has become rounded and shiny like the centaurs'. She's quite worried about this, but the centaurs brush it off as nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, the mysterious woman emerges from a hidden doorway in the cave and climbs onto the painted rock face, adding a depiction of Horse to the paintings.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Character Development: Horse tries her best to take Wammawink's place as the herd caregiver so that the centaur can get some sleep. When the centaurs bring up that the cave she finds might have beartaurs per the warning song, Horse admits they have a point and asks Glendale to scan the cave with her "borrowed" light equipment. It was actually a good plan; they didn't consider that the beartaur might have left for the day. When he comes, Horse orders the others to run, and she stays behind to distract the beartaur.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Wammawink could defeat the Beartaur and solve the food issue with no problem. She spends the entire episode asleep, leaving the rest of the herd to fend for themselves.
  • False Reassurance: The beartaur reassures Horse that he's not going to eat her. She's too valuable for him to do that. Instead, he's going to add her to his collection.
  • Geek Physiques: The beartaur is a stereotypical fat, slovenly nerd, with a prominent neckbeard.
  • Heavy Sleeper: Wammawink is still in her charmed sleep from the last episode, and save for briefly waking up enough to punch out the beartaur with a giant magic fist, spends most of the episode completely conked out.
  • Hope Spot: When Horse pulls a Heroic Sacrifice to get the others out of the cave, the Beartaur grabs her. Then...he starts to talk, and he actually seems reasonable. The Beartaur answers Horse's questions about where he got the boots and shows her his collection of human, centaur and minotaur figurines. He confirms that humans were once a part of Centaurworld. Then he says that he's glad Horse came, because he has a new figure for his collection: her!
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Ched compares how caves (supposedly) always have a second exit to how your mouth is connected to your... nostrils.
Ched: A cave always has a hole on one end and another hole on the other. Look, think of it like how your mouth is connected to your-
    Horse: Nope.
Ched: Nostrils. Alright? I'm not a heathen.
  • Lyrical Dissonance: The titular song "It's Hidin' Time" is a catchy country-style song, but its lyrics are a warning about the Beartaur and how he'll kidnap and/or eat you if you don't hide.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Wammawink's serious face when she hears her herd screaming in terror is straight out of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
    • After conjuring gigglecakes, Wammawink strikes a Sailor Moon pose.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Without Wammawink, the Herd had no idea where food comes from. Horse criticizes them, but it turns out her idea is to make a noise and let her Rider feed her.
  • Villain Song: The beartaur sings "My Collection", where he shows Horse his collection of figurines he made and explains his plans on making Horse part of it.
  • "The Villain Sucks" Song: The forest critter centaurs sing "It's Hidin' Time" about how scary the beartaur is, and when he shows up you better hide.
  • Wax Museum Morgue: The Beartaur's figures are hand-carved, but he is thrilled to have the opportunity to do this with Horse. His plan is to pose her, pour glue, and wait for it to dry. Horse distracts him before he can go that far.
  • Wham Episode: Centaurs and humans were once allies against the evil army seen in Episode 1, which are minotaurs. This establishes the two universes as having shared a close connection in the past and the minotaur army as being a significant threat active in both universes rather than simply a native force of the human world, and sets the groundwork for further revelations about the nature of the series' main villain. In addition, the magic of Centaurworld starts to physically affect Horse for the first time.
  • You Can Talk?: Horse has this reaction when the Beartaur reveals that he is sapient, and confronts her for barging into his home. She shakes it off to ask about the boots.
