Tropes

  • Book Ends: The beginning of the previous episode and the end of this episode have Zack and Ivy walking out of the abandoned Carmen Outfitters building.
  • Call-Back:
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Driver appears briefly as a party guest getting friendly with Trey Sterling.
  • Cool Car: The caper involves VILE stealing a state-of-the-art car to have the greatest getaway car ever. As Ibrahim Al Sibaq stated, it is a rocket ship on four wheels.
  • Honey Trap: Trey Sterling falls into one set by the Driver, who is posing as a rich woman at the party.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Sterling Sterling is a powerful businessman, but he is also reasonable. He doesn't dismiss Zack and Ivy for coming from the poor side of town, and he is willing to offer them a chance to join his racing team despite having just been caught stealing the new prototype racer.
    • Mr. Al-Sibab is able to be convinced to drop the charges against Zack and Ivy for the theft and later genuinely thankful for them saving the prototype from other thieves.
    • After failing to steal the car and getting caught by the authorities, Carmen rightfully gets pissed at Zack and Ivy for their reckless actions, chewing them out for jeopardizing the mission and potentially putting all of them at risk and giving VILE a chance to win. That said when she figures out that Zack and Ivy were offered their dream job as professional racers by Sterling, she gives them the freedom to take the job if they desire because she wants them to be happy.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Driver is only referred to briefly at the start by her code name. While she is at the party, no hint is given that she is a V.I.L.E. operative until after she binds and gags Trey and takes his racing suit and helmet, which fully cover her head and body. Once she is in the safety of the car and driving away with it, she takes a moment to reveal her face and identity as a woman.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title of the episode itself could be referring to either Top Gun or Need for Speed.
    • The Mechanic peppers her taunts to Zack and Ivy with references to Charles Dickens and his works, such as calling Zack and Ivy a "couple of Oliver Twists."
    • When pursuing The Driver into a warehouse Carmen slides on her motorcycle in a style reminiscent of Akira.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Sterling Sterling assumes Zack and Ivy stole the race car to impress its owner with their skills. Realizing that assumption will get them out of jail, Ivy eagerly plays along and nudges her brother into doing the same.
  • Think Nothing of It: When Mr. Al-Sibab thanks Zack and Ivy for their part in recovering his car, they humbly plead down their actions.
  • True Blue Femininity: Ivy wears a blue dress to Al-Sibab's party.
  • Villain Ball: V.I.L.E. doesn't seem to have sent around images of Zack or Ivy to their operatives in the event Carmen's crew shows up. Otherwise, the Driver would have recognized them as threats sooner.
