- Call-Back: Given the episode's a flashback would also make it a Call-Forward. When Le Chevre and El Topo report that Carmen foiled their counterfeit operation, a furious Coach Brunt says will crush Carmen for her betrayal. A threat she very nearly lived up too in the season 1 final.
- Counterfeit Cash: V.I.L.E. has an elaborate counterfeit operation in Boston.
- Idiot Ball: Zack lets his anger at Trey's insults control him, and he goes too fast around a hairpin turn. This results in not only wrecking their chances at gaining entry to the pro-level of racing but also wrecks his car.
- Implied Death Threat: Sharkhead Eddie "strongly implies" Zack and Ivy steal money from the donuts shop to square their debt to him while breaking some bread sticks in half. They understand quickly how failing this time will end badly.
- Origins Episode: Of how both Ivy and Zack met and later joined Carmen.
- Rhetorical Question Blunder: Shadow-san asks directly what possessed Carmen to staff her crew with the unruly and undisciplined Zack and Ivy. The pair decide to take the question at face value and start narrating their story.
- So Proud of You: A hidden one at the end of the flashback. After Shadow-san dismisses Carmen's potential threat to their organization, he turns his chair and smiles warmly at her impressive action. He does get to express this more when he tells Carmen his side of things during those events.
- Tempting Fate: In the flashback, after Le Chevre and El Topo report in on the first time Carmen interfered and derailed their scheme, Shadow-san dismisses Carmen's actions as a fluke and questions the harm one person can do against their organization. In the present, he honestly admits the Council didn't fully understand the threat and danger Carmen would pose to them.
