- The scene where the fishman makes the severed fish heads dance is a grosser version of a scene in Benny & Joon.
- Gwen decides she'll just give up and write her fanfiction when she's married and bored, "Like that chick who wrote Fifty Shades."
- Skewed Priorities: David is against Gwen dating the Fishman...because said Fishman wore casual clothing to a formal dinner, and didn't pull out Gwen's chair for her.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Neil broke his test tube while not performing an experiment without human consent. On an unrelated note, Space Kid's got a test tube in his arm.
- Took a Level in Cheerfulness: After starting dating the Fishman, Gwen becomes extremely upbeat and more helpful than ever.
- We Want Our Jerk Back!: Well, more Max wants the old cynical Gwen back.
- Whole-Plot Reference: It's basically The Shape of Water - except Gwen doesn't fall for the fishman because she's alienated from the world, she does it because she has a monster fetish.
