Recap / Bojack Horseman S 3 E 03 Bojack Kills

Go To

  • Bourgeois Bohemian: BoJack tries to rub elbows with major Academy members to try to secure an Oscar nomination. Starting with BoJack attending an absurdly PC winter pageant at a private school called "Rounded Corner Prep" with the slogan "a Gluten-Free Learning Experience". As well as other slogans implying this.
  • Clear My Name: The main plot revolves around BoJack and Diane trying to solve the murder of Nadia to prove that BoJack isn't the murderer.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: The banner at the Bat Mitzvah lampshades the pun of the girl in question being a bat.
  • Family-Friendly Stripper: Played For Laughs, it's here that we see this world's version of Sea World, which is essentially a family-friendly strip club in the most literal of terms.
  • Foreshadowing:
  • Hookers and Blow: Whale World plays the strip club tropes more straight after hours. Including Richie making his own brand of heroin called BoJack.
  • Political Overcorrectness: Parodied with the school "winter pageant" not only side-stepping any mention of holidays, but also trying to make things as gender neutral as possible and one kid declaring "snow goblin is an offensive slur". It says something when even Diane is annoyed at this!
  • Ripped from the Headlines: It's pretty evident that the Whale World plotline was influenced by recent controversies regarding Sea World, particularly from Blackfish.
  • Shout-Out: The elderly horse in the nursing home is a parody of Mister Ed.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: The Whale World ad is full of Goober listing all the obvious ethical concerns his business raises in this way, and offering only a Preemptive "Shut Up" in response.
  • Smelly Skunk: The B-plot has Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd getting sprayed by a neighbor skunk and trying to mask the smell.
  • Take That!:
    • Strip clubs are equated to whales being kept in captivity. 'Nuff said.
    • The all-inclusive winter pageant is a bit of a jab at trying to making thing politically correct to an absurd degree and Bourgeois Bohemians especially since the implication is that they're not even being sincere about it and are more focused on the image on being inclusive as well as other "liberal" trends such as being gluten-free just for the sake of being gluten-free.
    • BoJack remarks that the Academy doesn't look kindly on murder, but don't seem to mind rape (which proves to be Harsher in Hindsight considering the Weinstein effect).
  • Truth in Television: Killer whales raised in captivity really have curved dorsal fin (on a much lesser degree this happens to wild ones)
