Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E14 "Uncle Teddy"

Go To

Teddy is left to watch the kids, while Bob and Linda attend a burger chef convention—where they find they aren't very welcome.

Uncle Tropey:

  • The Alcoholic: Linda insists that since she paid for five shots, they're doing five shots.
  • The Alleged Car: Jonas often has difficulty starting his moped. Teddy throwing it into the ocean likely doesn't help.
  • Asshole Victim: It's hard to feel bad for the other chefs when Bob and Linda ruin the hot tub by dumping condiments into it. Ditto for when Teddy throws Jonas's moped into the ocean.
  • Bland-Name Product: Indefinite Stay, the hotel where the convention takes place, is a parody of residence hotel chains such as Extended Stay America.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The burger conference has large jars of condiments. Near the end of the episode, Bob and Linda dump two of them in the hot tub as part of their feud with the other forum members.
  • Companion Cube: Teddy pulls a large wad of hair out of the Belchers' kitchen sink drain. He, Gene, and Louise treat it like a baby.
  • Cult: Bob's cousin Vanessa belongs to one.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The forum chefs might've had a good reason to be angry at Bob for his unintentionally insulting comments, but harassing him when he's minding his own business and trying to force him to leave the hotel jacuzzi so they can use it is going too far. Especially when they bully Linda as well and because Bob rarely has time to take any vacations.
  • Dreadful Musician: Jonas carries a melodica around, but his frequent use of it doesn't mean he's any good—in fact, he's god awful. Even Tina, who is otherwise smitten with him, gets tired of it after a while.
  • Epic Fail: Bob claims to have no idea how to put "JK" or "LOL" in his forum comments, which the other chefs don't believe. Later on, Bob shouts "LOL! Laugh On Loudly!" after he dumps condiments into the hotel jacuzzi, indicating he really doesn't understand what "LOL" stands for.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes:
    • Bob turns out to be this to the other members of the burger forum, much to his surprise.
    • Jonas doesn't seem well liked by any of his friends. Especially in regards to his constant (and horrible) melodica playing.
  • Hated by All: Bob discovers he's this on the burger forum, due to the other chefs believing he's an obnoxious creep thanks to his poorly worded comments.
  • Honorary Uncle: The title speaks for itself.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Bob's "advice" to the other members of his burger forum turns out to be more insulting than he realized. When he tries to explain he was joking around with them, the other chefs point out he never gave any actual indicator that they were jokes.
  • Ironic Echo: When the other chefs initially brush off Bob, they do so by mockingly using internet lingo against him (such as "blocked"). Later, when Bob and Linda ruin the hot tub by dumping condiments into it, Bob turns the internet lingo back on them.
Bob: LOL. Laugh on loudly! And post!
  • Is This Thing Still On?: Bob calls to tell Teddy that he and Linda are coming home early. Teddy tells the kids they have fifteen minutes to rush home and pretend everything's fine. Bob informs Teddy that he heard this.
  • Jerkass:
    • Jonas uses Tina's obvious crush on him to get free food for himself and his friends, and they abandon her once they get in trouble.
    • Even after it becomes clear that Bob's forum posts were Innocently Insensitive and not outright malicious, the other burger chefs continue antagonizing him just to be spiteful.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Teddy ultimately wins Gene and Louise over with the tool he uses to unclog sinks.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Although Jonas very much deserved having his moped tossed into the ocean, Teddy instantly regrets doing so, lamenting that he'll have a lot to talk about in therapy.
  • No Social Skills: Bob believes he's online friends with a group of burger chefs, only to be shocked when he learns they hate him. This turns out to be due to Bob's complete lack of understanding internet etiquette which in turn meant all his attempts to be friendly and give helpful advice backfired because he unintentionally made it sound like he was bullying and insulting the other chefs.
  • Not Helping Your Case:
    • Bob tries to defend his comments by saying he doesn't know how to put "JK" or "LOL" in his comments. The chefs refuse to believe someone could be that inept and think he's lying.
    • The burger chefs all treat Bob like garbage because they thought he was bullying them. Even if Bob truly was being accidentally rude to them, none of them ever thought to simply tell him to stop or tried to have him banned from the forum for misconduct. They're all legitimately surprised he had the nerve to show up when they could've told him he wasn't welcome long before that weekend happened. That they go out of their way to harass him and Linda when they're minding their own business shows they're far worse.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The other burger chefs are only referred to by their forum usernames.
  • Papa Wolf: Teddy goes a little bit nuts when he realizes Jonas is just using Tina.
  • Pyromaniac: Louise really wants to get her hands on Teddy's blowtorch. Teddy doesn't realize her clear motives and almost hands it to her—the only reason he doesn't is because he's distracted by Jonas's awful music.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: It's a reference to Uncle Buck.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Ranger Dainko is willing to let Tina go, he just needs Teddy to sign the mandatory paperwork. Even when Teddy pisses him off by continually misunderstanding where to sign the paperwork, Dainko just leaves and doesn't punish Tina for it.
    • Teddy himself is the most reasonable of the Belcher babysitters, only getting into trouble because Tina runs off. Jen is so easily cowed (usually) that the kids can force her into almost anything, whereas Gayle is nuttier than a fruitcake and easily led into similarly wacky circumstances. Tina gets a pass for being young but even she can be pushed into hijinks if boys are involved. On the other hand, this isn't saying much; Teddy feeds Gene and Louise candy and soda and almost lets Louise use his blowtorch. He's similarly mostly responsible when he babysits in "Zero Larp Thirty;" there, the main problem is his back going out. Otherwise his weekend plans sounded perfectly acceptable.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Tina asks if Teddy could embarrass her more after he chases out Jonas and his friends. Louise quickly remarks that he absolutely could.
  • Running Gag: Jonas' horrible melodica playing.
  • Signature Instrument: Jonas's melodica, much to the detriment of everyone with functioning ears.
  • Stout Strength: The out-of-shape Teddy has enough strength to lift Jonas's moped over his head and toss it into the ocean.
  • Token Good Teammate: Discussed; when Tina is caught hosting Jonas and his friends, Gene disappointedly remarks that she was supposed to be the good one.
