Recap / Bobs Burgers S 11 E 12 Die Card Or Card Trying

Go To

Linda drags Bob and the kids out into nature, determined to take the best holiday family portrait ever.

  • All for Nothing: At the end, Linda receives the final Christmas cards and declares the picture perfect. But then on the final moments of the episode...
    Gene: My wiener is out.
    Linda: What!?
  • Brick Joke: Louise's "serial killer face" is mentioned once at the start of the episode. It comes back in the end credits, where we see that she's made the face for at least five of the Belchers' previous Christmas cards.
  • Butt-Monkey: Poor Tina gets pooped on by a bird. Twice, on both shoulders.
  • Clutching Hand Trap: Just as Linda has taken the perfect picture, she slips and drops the camera into a crack in the rocks. She manages to grab it before it falls off the other side, but now she can't pull her arm out without letting go of the camera.
  • Dreadful Musician: While Gene is a fairly decent keyboard player, his skill with the harmonica is horrible, to the point that Tina is begging him to stop. At one point she even slaps the harmonica out of his hands.
  • Embarrassing Old Photo: The Belcher's previous Christmas card photos always come out wrong. Either Bob sneezed in the middle of the shot or the kids are doing something improper, often both.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After eight long days of trying to solve the puzzle she got for Christmas, Louise finally solves it, and it gives her an idea of how to get Linda and the camera free: by turning Linda's body around so she slips out.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: You have to walk for three miles to get to Three Mile Lookout Point.
  • Eye Twitch: Linda doesn't take Bob's suggestion that the card doesn't matter all that well.
  • Family Portrait of Characterization: The end credits include a montage of previous Belcher family Christmas cards, none of which show the family at their best.
  • Foreshadowing: During the photo-taking process, Gene has to pee. It later turns out he never zipped back up, because he points out his penis in the seemingly-perfect final shot.
  • Gasshole: Gene lets out a fart during the photo-taking process. Bob also lets one out, which his kids cheer at.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Once the Belchers arrive at Three Mile Lookout Point, they have trouble figuring out the camera timer. They try to solve it by having some passing hikers take the photo, but they were standing behind the sun and all the photos came out with them in shadow.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Louise calls Linda obsessed over her photo, while at the same time struggling to solve the puzzle she's been obsessing over since Christmas.
  • I Have No Son!: Inverted; Gene is so pissed at having to go to Three Mile Lookout Point that he tells Linda she's not his mother right now.
  • It Runs in the Family: As crazy as Linda seems to be about the picture, the rest of the family fixates on something as well, in relation to their Christmas presents.
    • Louise has a love/hate relationship with her wooden puzzle toy.
    • Gene blows endlessly and tunelessly on his new harmonica.
    • Tina can't stop playing with her new hat, although this is initially justified by her needing to stretch it out.
    • Bob is juicing everything, and his main objection to the outing is that he doesn't want to be separated from the juicer.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Louise suggests that Linda just drop the camera, and notes that Bob and Gene actually approve of the idea.
  • Kubrick Stare: Linda has to warn Louise not to make her "serial killer face" when taking the photo. Louise then demonstrates said face, and it's truly creepy.
  • Not So Above It All: The park ranger is very stern about ordering the Belchers out of the park, but is touched when they ask him to help free Linda and her camera.
  • Properly Paranoid: Bob refuses to let Gene hold the bag of snacks. Gene notes that Bob doesn't trust him, and actually agrees that he has a point.
  • Serious Business: Linda treats sending out Christmas cards as if it's the defining part of her life.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Store Next Door is "Say Hello to My Little French: Language School".
    • The Exterminator Van is "The Pest is Yet to Come".
    • When Linda is recalling how they were chased off someone's property in a previous failed attempt at shooting a Christmas card, Gene says "Why have a fountain if you don't expect people to do a Friends in it?"
    • Louise mentions Jeremiah Johnson when they fear they'll get lost in the woods. Bob questions how she knows that movie, which she's too young to see; she admits she just came up with the name at random and has never actually heard of the movie.
    • When Bob suggests that Linda drop the camera, Linda claims she's not throwing away her shot, before pausing and clarifying that she means her shot of the family.
  • This Is Going to Suck: The entire family complains when Linda declares that they're going to take the picture at Three Mile Lookout Point, which is so called because it's a three-mile hike to get there. The kids are trying to jump out of the car, and Bob looks like he's considering hitting the brakes and turning around.
