Recap / Bluey Granny Mobile

Go To

As the Heeler family's neighbor Doreen runs a yard sale, Muffin joins the Granny game as a "Grouchy Granny"-only to meet a real one!

This episode provides examples of:

  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: The Heelers and Doreen celebrate and praise Muffin for successfully haggling the old pug into trading the Granny Mobile.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: An unspoken one. Doreen is all about being nice because she doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but her garage sale suffers for it because she's too nice to haggle. Meanwhile, Muffin is assigned to play the "grouchy granny" – assertive and aggressive, but by her own admission, she finds the persona emotionally exhausting. By the end, the two benefit from the other's approach. Doreen adopts an assertive personality so she can haggler better, and Muffin is happier being a "Super Granny".
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The grouchy pug granny drives her new granny mobile straight over the end credits of the episode.
  • Breather Episode: This comically driven, pun-intended, episode was placed before the dramatic and serious 'Space', which deals with Mackenzie's anxiety issues and PTSD.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Muffin tends to be a Bratty Half-Pint at times and is prone to throwing tantrums, but at one point she breaks character from her "grouchy granny" role to express her concern that she's acting too grouchy.
  • Extreme Doormat: Doreen gives in to all the offers her buyers make, even the cheapest ones.
  • Fantastic Racism: Downplayed. The old pug lady tells Chili to “stay out of it” and negatively addresses her as “cattle dog”.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: A collectible plate is shown at the yard sale. A brief closeup of it reveals that it's a plate commemorating the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Charles appears as a hound, with a forlorn expression. Di appears as a Jack Russell Terrier, giving her trademark side-eye face.
  • Grew a Spine: By the end, Doreen is more confident, to the point that she's willing to jack up the price of some exercise equipment she's offering to Bandit.
  • Grumpy Old Man: While playing "Grannies", Muffin gets to play the part of the "grouchy granny", compared to Bluey and Bingo who play more benign grannies.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: Muffin's granny persona and the old lady pug get into this when Muffin tries to upsell her on paying more money for the mobility scooter.
  • Hate Sink: The old lady pug is so far the only character in the entire show to play this straight. She's rude to everyone around her, refuses to pay for something she broke, hits Bandit with her purse, and even calls him fat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Muffin's "grouchy granny" persona has shades of this. She may not seem as nice as Doreen, but she utilizes her aggressive nature to haggle with a old lady pug in order to raise money. And what does she do with that money? Give it to Doreen for her garage sale.
  • Kids Prefer Boxes: In the end, as a reward for haggling the old lady pug out of $1200 (which will certainly fund Doreen's vacation very nicely), Doreen offers Muffin can have whatever she wants from her yard sale for free. ...Muffin wants the dish rag, much to Doreen's surprise. Justified, as she wants to use it as a cape to become a "super granny" in Bluey and Bingo's game, rather than be typecast as the "grouchy granny".
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: While Muffin has her Bratty Half-Pint tendencies, at one point she breaks character to express awareness that she's playing the role of the "grouchy granny" a bit too well.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: The old lady pug is about the size of five year old Bingo.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The old lady pug wears glasses that makes her eyes look much bigger than everyone else's, and she's almost fully clothed aside from not wearing shoes while the show's other characters are half dressed cartoon animals at most. Also, her general body and mouth shape deviates from that of the other characters, including other pugs, in this series.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: When Muffin is haggling with the old lady over the price of the scooter, the song playing in the background is "Habanera" from Carmen.
  • Screw Politeness, I'm a Senior!: Muffin utilizes this while playing "Grannies" and goes against an actual old lady pug who is rude to everyone around her.
  • You Are Fat: The old pug insults Bandit by criticizing his weight. He ends up taking this to heart, as shown in a later scene where he looks at himself in a mirror with worry.
