Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 3 E 07 Big Chibi 6

Go To

Hardlight is inspired by Karmi's new cartoon to create a chibi version of Big Hero 6 to fight them while she's in turn for an autograph signing.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Almost Kiss: Suited-up Hiro and Karmi have one towards the end of the episode. Karmi stops because her feelings for "Captain Cutie" have been replaced with feelings for... someone else.
  • Brick Joke: Aunt Cass idly asks "What about Megan?" before a scene transition. In the ending of the episode, Baymax asks Honey Lemon the same thing, but she just tells him to "Let me have this".
  • The Bus Came Back: Karmi, after being pulled from SFIT by her parents, marks her first physical appearance back in the show since "City of Monsters, Pt. 2".
    • Hardlight as well, since his last appearance was his first.
  • Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Before any time Karmi and Hiro were anywhere near each other they couldn't help but snark at each other; now they can barely look at each other in the eyes.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Megan is mentioned by both Aunt Cass and Baymax as also being Hiro's potential Love Interest, then quickly dismissed because everyone wants to focus on Karmi.
    • Hardlight is confused as to why Karmi didn't see him on TV, which she responds with "I don't think I was here for that." Given that she had been away since "City of Monsters, Pt. 2", she wouldn't know who he is at all.
  • Crush Blush: When Karmi admits that her feelings for "Captain Cutie" have changed and she now has a crush on someone else, that "someone else" heavily implied to be Hiro himself, Hiro blushes a vivid red before collecting himself.
  • Dark Reprise: The Chibi song shown in the beginning of the episode gets a borderline apocalyptic-sounding reprise when Hardlight swarms Big Hero 6 with Captain Cutie copies.
  • The Ghost: Megan, who hasn't been seen since the Season 2 finale, is mentioned several times but never seen.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Hardlight is defeated by the horde of Captain Cuties he created when Karmi reprograms them.
  • Internal Reveal: Hardlight is exposed as Krei Tech intern Ian.
  • Irony: Karmi once accused Hiro of having a crush on her, only for her to develop one for him.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: In an unusual case, Karmi implies that her feelings have flip-flopped between Hiro's dual identities.
  • One-Woman Wail: After Hardlight creates dozens of Captain Cutie holograms, they begin attacking the heroes while accompanied by a One-Woman Wail using the word "Chibi" over and over.
  • Power Fist: Karmi uses one to fight the chibi clones, having picked up some mechanics and programming skills offscreen.
  • Projectile Kiss: Karmi uses a variant by manifesting holographic hearts from her gauntlet and blowing them at the Captain Cutie copies, reprogramming them to serve her.
  • Read the Fine Print: Fred got everyone VIP passes for Karmi's signing, but Richardson, in whose store the signing is taking place, put a "No Fredricksons" rule in the fine print.
  • Romantic Ribbing: When Hiro expresses dismay that Karmi's web series will make people wrongly believe "Captain Cutie" has a crush on her, Wasabi teasingly asks if they'd be wrong, with him and Fred mock swooning with each other.
  • Running Gag: Every time Hiro talks to Karmi (as himself), he has something in his hands - a book, his phone, a cup, etc. Each time it start to get awkward, he throws the item away, where it hits someone offscreen.
  • Sequel Hook: This is the final appearance of Karmi in the series, with her future with Hiro left open.
  • She's Not My Girlfriend: Hiro regarding Karmi again.
  • Ship Sinking: A strange example. Karmi seems to have lost any romantic interest in Hiro in his superhero identity, although she appears to have a crush on Hiro in his civilian identity.
  • Shipper on Deck: Honey Lemon is once again one for Hiro and Karmi. She even asks Baymax to "Let me have this" when he brings up Megan. The rest of BH6 act like this as well, albeit in more of an Everyone Can See It sort of way.
  • Ship Tease: Although neither of them say it, it's clear both Hiro and Karmi's feelings for each other have moved beyond friends.
  • Shout-Out: The way the Chibi Hardlight dies is by fading away into dust while being embraced by his 'father', very similar to the way Peter Parker died in Tony Stark's arms in Avengers: Infinity War.
  • Stealth Pun: Karmi defeats the chibi clones with an invasive program that changes their programming, i.e. with a computer virus. note
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Aunt Cass and Baymax both ask, unsuccessfully, about Megan.
  • The Unhug: Karmi and a suited-up Hiro have one before parting ways after Karmi admits she no longer has a crush on him.
  • Twice Shy: In contrast to their former brazen antics towards each other, the time apart has turned Hiro and Karmi into this, with neither finding it easy to talk to the other.
  • Wham Line: Hiro (as Captain Cutie) and Karmi are just about to kiss when Karmi pulls away with an apology, as well as this:
Karmi: Sorry. I was totally in love with you once, but... after I left SFIT, I realize that I like someone else now. He...doesn't know.
  • Zerg Rush: When the chibi knockoffs fail to defeat Big Hero 6 on equal terms, Hardlight creates an army of Captain Cutie clones to overwhelm Big Hero 6 with sheer numbers.
