Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 07 Aunt Cass Goes Out

Go To

A scientist wants to recover an invention that's being misused by Krei. Meanwhile, to Hiro's horror, Aunt Cass is going out with Krei.

Tropes:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The buddy guards are highly susceptible to going haywire and attacking anyone. Getting them wet is enough to make them turn on their owners.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Mel does end up developing feelings for Aunt Cass, but she find him weird and creepy.
  • Accidental Tickle Torture: When Mel is hiding behind Fred from the "buddy" robots, the former's unintentionally tickling the latter from outside his suit.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Hiro wants his Aunt to have a boyfriend so she'll be too distracted to find out he and Baymax are part of Big Hero 6. She ends up dating Krei. GoGo mocks him for this. To add insult to injury, he wasn't even trying yet.
  • Blackmail: Krei threatens to expose Big Hero 6's identities unless they agree to correct the flaws with Kreitech's newest product.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: When Hiro and his friends protest against being blackmailed by Krei, Krei says his lawyers advised him against using that word.
  • Brick Joke: Early on the episode, Hiro makes up an excuse about wanting to wear a movie shirt for movie night so his Aunt Cass won't find out he's a crime fighter. During the epilogue, there's another movie night and Baymax gives Hiro a movie shirt.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Aunt Cass is surprised that chicken costs so much at Krei's restaurant and compares it to her cheap chicken fingers at her restaurant. Krei is surprised that chickens have fingers and concludes that they're the toes of chicken feet. note
  • Continuity Nod: When the issue of flaws with the buddy guard, Krei's assistant mentions Krei's reputation as a short cut taker, mirroring Professor Callaghan's claims back in the movie.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Krei finally reveals his true colors to the heroes; he blackmails people into working for him and has no qualms about using an invention for a purpose not intended by the scientist who developed it.
  • Crash-Into Hello: As Krei walks out of the lab while talking to Big Hero 6, he bumps into an entering Aunt Cass. She catches him before he falls, leading to Love at First Sight.
    Krei: Nice catch.
    Aunt Cass: Thanks.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Krei is genuinely attracted to Aunt Cass, leading to him spoiling her on his date and acting on his best behavior around her. Even at the end when Aunt Cass breaks up with him after learning he's a jerk, he still finds her lovely.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Aunt Cass breaks up with Krei because he's a jerk, and doesn't pursue Mel because he's a weirdo.
  • Hidden Depths: Krei knows how to make origami paper cranes... particularly using dollar bills (his father didn't let him use ones that cost more than $50). Aunt Cass is able to make an origami person out of dollar bills as well.
  • History Repeats: Once again, the main antagonist is a scientist with a score to settle with Krei. He really should learn to stop ticking them off.
  • Huge Holographic Head: Wasabi tries to make the buddies visible again, but they just take the form of Krei’s face.
  • I Have Your Wife: Subverted. Though he meets Aunt Cass right after threatening to reveal Big Hero 6's civilian identities, he genuinely falls in love with Aunt Cass as opposed to using her as further blackmail towards the team.
  • Kids Play Match Breaker:
  • Latex Perfection: The cloaking device can overlay an image - in this case, Krei’s face- over whatever it covers. Mel uses it to impersonate Krei.
  • Love at First Sight: Krei and Aunt Cass, courtesy of Crash-Into Hello.
  • Morality Pet: When a waiter spills food on Krei (having been tripped by Hiro to screw up their date), Krei holds off on yelling at the waiter and firing him in Aunt Cass's presence, and as a bonus, gives him his $50 dollar origami to buy "chicken toes". Subverted later when Aunt Cass says that Mel has a point about how he's a jerk and that he shouldn't press charges against him. Krei replies that even though Cass is lovely, he's still pressing charges.
  • Mundane Utility: Mel is upset that Krei is using his cloaking tech on machines for hurting people. His preferred use for it? To hide during surprise parties.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The fire from Fred’s suit activates the sprinkler system, short circuiting the buddy guards.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Krei struggles to be this while in front of Aunt Cass.
  • Not So Great Escape: Mel tries to get away using the invisibility cloak, but it fails to cover his feet.
  • Our Lawyers Advised This Trope: Krei's lawyers advised him against using the word "blackmail".
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: Hiro is squicked out by Aunt Cass dating Krei, but it's more that Krei has been acting against Big Hero 6 lately than Aunt Cass pursuing a romance.
  • See the Invisible: Fred makes the defective buddy guard visible by spraying ketchup all over the lab until some gets on the buddy.
  • Sexophone: Plays whenever Krei and Cass have a romantic moment.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Hiro is weirded out by the idea of Krei and Aunt Cass being a couple, but he actively tries to sabotage their date when Baymax suggests the possibility of them getting married and Krei becoming his uncle.
  • Status Quo Is God: Krei and Aunt Cass break up at the end of the episode, Cass having realized that Krei is a jerk.
