Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 1 E 04 Food Fight

Go To

Aunt Cass gets addicted to the thrill after unwittingly entering an underground cooking contest, which is coincidentally being run by the professional thief Big Hero 6 is after.

Tropes:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Momakase uses special knives with blades so thin they can't even be seen from the side.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Hiro and Aunt Cass feel this for each other.
  • Call-Back: Cass sees one of Hiro's old fighting robots and thinks he went to one of the secret fight clubs he used to go in the beginning of the movie.
  • Carrying the Antidote: Momakase feeds Krei poisonous sushi and will only give him the antidote if he reveals where the anti-gravity device prototype is.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Cheating is actually encouraged in the cooking contests. Yet Aunt Cass's opponents attempts to sabotage her either fail or end up backfiring on them. Aunt Cass plays completely fair every time, resulting in her gaining an unbroken winning streak.
  • Cooking Duel: The premise of the secret underground competition Aunt Cass enters.
  • Cool Aunt: Hiro is impressed by Aunt Cass's takedown of Momakase with the Inescapable Net, remarking to her at the end of the episode he sometimes forgets how amazing she is.
  • Diagonal Cut: A Running Gag is that Momakase has sliced everything in Krei's office, which is only made apparent when someone touches something and it falls apart.
  • Exact Words:
    • Momakase tells Krei that he doesn't need to worry about the fish she prepared being dangerous. (It's not Fugu, as Krei worries, but otoro — the best and most expensive part of tuna.) The toxin she added to it, on the other hand...
    • When Yama threatens not to pay her for only bringing back half of the anti-gravity device, she points out that he hired her to steal what was in Krei's safe, which she did.
    • Fred says that his dad has a state of the art bad guy database, and it was, back in 1972. Although the information is up-to-date, even if it's in punch cards.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Red dots on Krei's underwear as seen in this episode.
  • Humble Pie: Bolton Gramersi is initally arrogant and condescending towards Aunt Cass, only to be defeated by her in her first match, forcing him to hand over his knives (which were given to him by his grandmother). He later returns at the end of the episode, apologizing for the way he treated her, acknowledging her skill as a chef, and humbly asking if she can find it in her heart to return his knives.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Hiro asking Baymax if Aunt Cass knows what it feels like worrying over family when he also sneaks out.
  • Inescapable Net: Momakase drops a net on Cass to stop her from delivering her food to the judges on time. She is freed when the anti-gravity device activates, then traps Momakase with it.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Bolton Gramersi is a caricature of Gordon Ramsay, who voices him.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: During his last attempt to cheat, Bolton Gramersi tries to throw an egg at Aunt Cass but accidentally bumps into his blowtorch, causing his own entry to be burnt.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: When Bolton shows up at Aunt Cass' restaurant to ask for his knives back, he has to find them among the several sets of knives she won from her other rivals.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Instead of simply selling the stolen device to Yama, who had agreed to pay double the originally offered amount, Momakase decides to keep it in hopes of selling it for more money in the black market. If not for that, Big Hero 6 wouldn't have had a chance to recover the device and use it to ruin her plan to get a Disqualification-Induced Victory against Cass.
  • No Gravity for You: This is what the gravity-manipulating device does when it's activated.
  • Pun: Wasabi tells everyone that graphene knives are 'cutting edge'.
''Wasabi: Pun not intended... Okay, pun intended.
  • Smug Super: Momakase is skilled, both as a chef and a thief, and knows it.
  • Sore Loser: Momakase attacks Cass after the latter wins their match.
  • Special Guest: Famous chefs Gordon Ramsay and Alton Brown appear as Bolton Gramersi and Yum Labouché, respectively.
  • Static Electricity: While stroking Mochi, Baymax (who is basically a walking balloon) accidentally causes a static charge that makes the poor cat's fur stand on end.
  • Stealth Pun: When Hiro wants to know what Aunt Cass is doing so late, she tells him there's nothing wrong with cutting loose every once a while (and she is indeed cutting loose, and chopping loose, various foods.) Also, when Hiro is about to deactivate the gravity device that's making everything float weightlessly, he warns everyone that things are about to get 'heavy'.
  • Tempting Fate: Upon looking around to evaluate the damage his office received, Krei is glad to be okay only to see his clothes falling apart.
