Go To

Set in the future, world-famous Ben 10,000 gives his son Kenny his own Omnitrix for his birthday. But Ben is overprotective and doesn't include enough combat aliens for Kenny's liking. Later, Kenny makes a new friend Devlin, who may not be what he seems.

Tropes

  • Actor Allusion: Richard Horvitz voices an alien kid with a big nose, a red baseball cap, and a white/blue shirt.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the beginning of the episode, Ben is fighting an alien and says, "I do not have time for this. There's no way I'm missing another one of his birthdays!" Considering what happened back in the episode, "Ben 10,000", it’s easy to assume that he’s talking about Grandpa Max. But when Ben arrives at the party, it’s revealed that it’s actually his son’s birthday.
  • Bring It: "Ben 10,000, meet Kevin 11,000!"
  • The Cameo: Gwen appears briefly by way of holo-projection. She's away tracking down a villain.
  • Cerebus Retcon: This version of the Ben 10,000 future gets revisited in Omniverse while retaining Kevin's Heel–Face Turn. It does this by establishing that Kevin had absorbed an obscene amount of energy at some point in the past and had gone insane as a result. This makes some of his interactions with Devlin harder to watch as they mean that his horrified reaction to how Kevin behaves has less to do with not being the father he wanted and more because the man isn't acting the way he should.
  • Disney Death: Kenny's pet rock monster gets stomped into rubble by Kevin, but reforms at the end of the episode. Perks of being a magical creature.
  • Don't Ask: Said by a Ditto when a disco ball and lights appear in the Rust Bucket.
  • Evil Feels Good: Kevin doesn't keep fighting Ben to prove he's the best; he does it because he likes it.
  • Foreshadowing: There are some hints as to Devlin’s father’s identity, with him noting that his dad tends to “lock him out” and the day after “Kevin” breaks into Ben’s house and fails to find the Null Void projector, Devlin complains to Ken that he was supposed to meet with his dad, but he wasn’t able to.
  • Happily Adopted: Devlin ends up being adopted by Kenny's family after he redeems himself.
  • Kick the Dog: After he's freed from the Null Void, Kevin makes it clear to Devlin that he does not care about his son so much as he cares about being a sociopathic villain. This brings Devlin to tears and causes his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Lamarck Was Right: Devlin inherits the ability to transform into Kevin's Shapeshifter Mashup form despite the fact that it was an effect of the latter absorbing the Omnitrix's energy and not his natural power.
  • Missing Mom: Neither Kenny's nor Devlin's mothers are seen or mentioned. In the popup edition of the episode it is stated that Kenny's mother is Kai Green and that he has a sister named after Gwen but they were both busy on a mission and therefore could not assist to Kenny's birthday party while Devlin's mother was a woman from a Saturn colony with whom Kevin engaged in a relationship during one of the many times he escaped the Null Void.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kevin thanks Ben for locking so many powerful aliens in the Null Void, which helped give him all sorts of new tricks.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After Kevin smacks Kenny aside, Ben uses Way Big to give him a vicious pummeling.
  • Papa Wolf: Ben after Kevin hits Kenny hard enough to knock him out. So much so that it gives him his Heroic Second Wind to hit Kevin with everything he's got.
  • Parents as People: Although Ben is a decent father, he proves to be overprotective of Kenny to the point that he doesn't trust him with any of the good aliens in his Omnitrix, or even with fighting real bad guys. He gets better towards the end.
  • Parental Hypocrisy: Ben tells Ken that being a hero isn't kids stuff, and later asks where his son got such an attitude when Ken acts like he did at his age. Both times he's reminded with a cough and a stern look by Max that he's being a hypocrite. Then called out verbally by Gwen that he can't be angry at Kenny for being just like him when he was a kid.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Ben screams "HOW! DARE! YOU!" during his Way Big pummeling on Kevin.
  • Rule of Drama: Kenny's Omnitrix times out even though he unlocked Master Control.
  • Shout-Out: One of Ken's friends is an alien that resembles Billy.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Just as Ben initially mistakes Devlin for Kevin, Kevin mistakes Ken for Ben.
  • Strong Family Resemblance:
    • Kenny looks almost exactly like Ben, only with slightly different facial features, darker skin and hair that he inherited from Kai. He even has has the same voice as Ben did at that age.
    • Devlin looks just like eleven-year-old Kevin with a different hair style.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Buzzshock talks here unlike in the Megawhatt's first appearance where they just made sounds.
  • The Voiceless: Benmummy doesn't talk.
  • Wham Shot: When Devlin opens the Null Void Projector's portal, a familiar man with long black hair steps out. A man named Kevin.
  • Wham Line: Coupled with the Wham Shot.
    Kevin: Hello, son.
    Devlin: Hey, Dad.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Kevin attacks Kenny and even his own son.
  • "X" Marks the Hero: Inverted as Kevin is at one of his more sociopathic moods and sports an X-scar on his chin.
