Never mess with a mermaid.

You want to mess with a monster? Try me on for size.

The team arrives at a lake but they quickly realize that an underwater creature called "the Krakken" is attacking the coast.

Tropes:

  • Anchors Away: Ripjaws breaks the arm of Jonah's minisubmarine by throwing an anchor to it.
  • Animal Wrongs Group: The "Friends of Fish" organization is just a façade to hunt exotic underwater creatures.
  • Blatant Lies: XLR8 questions Jonah and his men what's in the box that is so important they risked their own lives to stop the Krakken from taking it. Jonah just says it is their lunch. XLR8 obviously doesn't buy it.
XLR8: You almost got munched for a few sandwiches?
  • Combat Tentacles: The Krakken has two in her mouth.
  • Crying Wolf: At the beginning of the episode, Ben is attacked by the titular Krakken but neither Gwen nor Grandpa Max believe him because he had already scared Gwen by pretending to be attacked by a monster in the lake. Until the Krakken appears of course.
  • Evil Poacher: Both Jonah and his team hunt endangered and rare species to sell them to private collectors.
  • Foreshadowing: When the Krakken tries to take the crate from Jonah's ship, Jonah tries to save it himself. Later, after saving both, XLR8 wonders what was in the crate that Jonah would risk his life for it. He claims it contained the crew's lunch, to which XLR8 is dubious that "a few sandwiches" is worth getting killed by a sea monster. While Played for Laughs, it turns out Jonah was lying: the crate contains the Krakken's eggs.
  • Go Through Me: Near the episode's end, Ripjaws pulls this off to prevent the Krakken from killing Jonah in revenge for his actions even if it would've been deserved. The Krakken backs off.
  • Hand Signals: Grandpa Max tries talking to Gwen doing these so the "Friends of Fish" members wouldn't hear them. A guy suddenly appearing behind them makes them pointless.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Shaw may be gruff and a little obsessed with hunting the Krakken. But when he discovers Ben has stowed away, although a bit annoyed, he's pretty lenient in letting Ben tag along. What's more, when interrogated by the bad guys about having somebody in company, Shaw lies about being alone in order to keep them from discovering Ben.
  • Kraken and Leviathan: Naturally. This version has two giant tentacles in its mouth and it's capable of temporarily surviving on land.
  • MacGuffin Melee: Both Ripjaws, Jonah (Inside a minisubmarine) and the Krakken end up stealing the eggs from each other. In a variation, Ripjaws is actually trying to help the Krakken but she doesn't notice until he puts her eggs in their nest.
  • Meaningful Name: Jonah Melville takes his name from Jonah, a character in The Bible who was swallowed by a whale, and Herman Melville, who wrote Moby-Dick.
  • Mêlée à Trois: The climax of the episode has the Friends of Fish out to steal the Krakken's eggs and take over the lake, Jonah trying to kill the Krakken and keep the Friends of Fish away from the lake, the Krakken trying to defend herself and take her eggs back and Ben trying to get the Krakken's eggs back to her under fire from everybody else (including the Krakken, mistakenly believing he's also trying to steal the eggs).
  • Monster Is a Mommy: The Krakken was only attacking the coast and various ships because she was looking for her stolen eggs.
  • Powered Armor: Jonah's minisubmarine acts like an armor and has various weapons built in such as a minigun and a sonic weapon.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: XLR8 uses his super speed to repeatedly kick the bottom of the Krakken's mouth.
  • Save the Villain: Played with. When the Krakken is about to eat Jonas for stealing her eggs, Ripjaws intervenes in order to save his life. Jonas shrugs, as though wordlessly wondering why Ripjaws would bother saving him, to which he answers the question with an equally wordless punch, letting Jonas know it wasn't entirely out of good will.
  • Shark Fin of Doom: The Krakken is fond of doing this with the spike at the end of her head.
  • Shout-Out: This episode's title and Ben himself refer to a poem called The Kraken by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
    • When Stinkfly appears, the Friends of Fish mention a famous line "Is it a bird, maybe a plane?" This is a reference to the Superman musical from the 1960s.
    • Captain Shaw is a reference to Quint from the 1975 movie "Jaws" played by Robert Shaw.
    • The "monster" Ben uses to scare Gwen is a reference to Man-Thing.
  • Skewed Priorities: The members of "Friends of Fish" risk their lives to stop the Krakken from stealing their food. Ben lampshades this but it's ultimately justified; the crates that supposedly stored their food had the creature's eggs inside.
  • Stock Ness Monster: Although her name comes from a completely different Nordic monster, the Krakken is more similar to Nessie. Both have supposedly been living on a lake for hundreds of years, they are part of the local tales and their body shape resembles a plesiosaur more than an octopus.
  • Tempting Fate: After having scared Gwen as Four Arms, Ben says that the idea of a monster living in the lake is really dumb. He gets attacked by the titular one a few seconds later.
  • Walk on Water: XLR8 demonstrates that he can actually run on water.
