    Chapter 1
Shears leads a number of AVALANCHE members through an underground entrance to Sector 8. They kill a Shinra security guard and then split up, leaving a small guard force behind.

Player Turk gets their first job from Tseng: patrol Sector 8, "standard work for all new Turks". Tseng tells them that even Reno, Rude and himself started out with simple patrol duty. The mission quickly goes haywire: instead of peaceful patrol, the Turk hears the AVALANCHE battle cry and rushes to investigate.

After dispatching two rear guards left by Shears, the Turk reports their findings to Tseng. Tseng tells Veld about disturbances in Sector 8. Veld orders someone else to be sent help the player Turk.

Tseng orders the player Turk to capture the yet-unknown attackers and interrogate them. Soon after, a larger contingent of AVALANCHE members arrives, forcing the Turk to flee. The AVALANCHE team leader leaves several guards behind, then blows up the reactor door and enters.

Tseng and Veld discuss the possible repercussions of the reactor blowing up, then Tseng contacts player Turk again and orders them to stop the terrorists. The player Turk kills one guard and finds themself surrounded by six more. Thankfully, Reno arrives and obliterates them in a quick cutscene, then sends the Turk into the reactor.

Shears arrives on the scene and tells Reno that even with all his speed, he's no match for him. Reno challenges him to a fight.

The player Turk enters the reactor and receives a new order from Tseng - stop the terrorists from breaching the reactor door. The Turk kills three AVALANCHE members, then comes back on the street just in time to see Reno lose his fight to Shears. Shears then fights the Turk, knocking them out in one hit; after that, an AVALANCHE messenger arrives telling him that all members should gather in Junon. Shears leaves, telling the messenger to take care of the Turks. Player Turk, however, manages to recover and kill the AVALANCHE member.

Reno thanks the player Turk and says that he doesn't know who the attackers are. Tseng does, however: he reports to Veld that the reactor was attacked by an organization called AVALANCHE. Upon learning that AVALANCHE are going to gather in Junon, Veld tells Tseng that President Shinra is currently in the city.

Fuhito is preparing to go to Junon with his group. He's apparently interested in a "silver-haired soldier", but his men know nothing about him. Fuhito says that if Shinra bring him in, all their plans will be ruined.

Chapter 2: In the White Light of Day, the Assassin Smiles
Year 0001/02/30

PM 1:00

Reno, player Turk and two Shinra guards reach the hotel in Junon where the President stays. As soon as the Turks enter the hotel, AVALANCHE attacks in numbers and kills both guards, then invade the hotel.

The Turks enter the President's suite and converse with him. A security guard rushes into the room and warns them about AVALANCHE, then gets Killed Mid-Sentence. An AVALANCHE member enters and tries to assault the President, but is defeated by the player Turk. Veld tries to convince President Shinra to hold off the planned military inspection, but Shinra refuses. With Turks and more security guards in tow, he proceeds to the press room.

An AVALANCHE member throws a bomb from above, killing another guard and damaging the road. Reno goes off to deal with him, leaving President Shinra in the hands of the player Turk. They fight their way to the press room. Veld officially assigns the Turk for presidential guard duty.

The president goes to the press room. A Shinra guard gives the player Turk a message, allegedly from their boss, to watch the hotel entrance. The Turk goes down the stairs and discovers a wounded Shinra guard who tells them that the “guards” they met earlier were fakes, and the president is in danger.

President Shinra is cornered in the press room by three AVALANCHE members in disguise. The player Turk arrives to stop them at the last possible moment. After they’re defeated, Reno arrives. The president starts to give his speech as scheduled, but then the lights turn off. Veld contacts the Turks and says that there have been troubles with the Mako generator, then orders the player Turk to investigate. Reno stays with the president.

The power is quickly restored, but Fuhito is still satisfied, as they stopped President Shinra from airing his speech in full. He enters the press room and introduces himself to Reno and the president. As he tries to leave, player Turk intercepts him. Reno flees with the president, while the rookie is left to “keep Fuhito busy”. This turns out to be another Hopeless Boss Fight, however.

Upon defeating the Turk, Fuhito decides not to finish them off and just leave, threatening that “the day you take your last breath approaches fast”, and then telling them about some “fireworks”. Soon after, Veld contacts the Turk and says that AVALANCHE seized the town’s Mako cannon and aimed it at Midgar.

President Shinra gets a video call; it’s from his son Rufus. After a bit of chit-chat with the father, Rufus asks Reno about the new Turk. Then Veld interrupts the call with the same information the player Turk already knows: AVALANCHE seized Junon’s Mako cannon. President Shinra orders to increase the security level to S, then sends Reno to the Mako cannon. As soon as Reno leaves, Fuhito, who’d been hiding in the room the whole time, appears and shots the president.

An AVALANCHE squad moves towards the cannon.

President Shinra is wounded, but not fatally, and orders Veld to call Sephiroth. The latter is shown in the wild, having just killed a large monster.

Chapter 3: Swords Clashing in the Evening Shadows
Year 0001/02/30

PM 3:30

AVALANCHE has seized the Mako cannon and aimed it at the Shinra HQ in Midgar.

Reno and a squad of Shinra security confront an AVALANCHE blockade. Meanwhile, player Turk goes through an underground passage. Tseng recaps the situation for them: AVALANCHE has shot the president and seized the Mako cannon. The security has been tightened to the maximum level, not letting AVALANCHE use the cannon controls. Veld is currently tending to the president, Tseng acting as his contact with the player Turk. The Turk is to get to the Mako cannon control room through the passage and finalize the security lockdown sequence.

The Turk hears screams ahead and goes to investigate. The AVALANCHE members have already been dispatched by the security robots. These robots, however, consider the Turk an intruder too, so they have to run through the several rooms while avoiding any contact with the robots.

The player Turk discusses this apparent malfunction with Tseng. He explains that there is no malfunction: the security program has been activated to the highest possible level, with robots targeting anything that moves.

In another room, the Turk meets a Materia clone of themselves and kills it before proceeding further. Meanwhile, Reno loses his entire squad and is left facing four AVALANCHE fighters.

The player Turk enters the cannon room as the AVALANCHE members declare it ready for use. They even tell the Turk that they wouldn’t fight them, since the override has already been activated, and there’s no time to cancel it. The Turk rushes forward anyway and finds several massacred bodies in the corridor. As they reach the control room, they find nobody there. Tseng congratulates the Turk with a job well done, but they reply they didn’t do anything. After learning that the Turk found several dead bodies in the corridor, Tseng wonders if it was “him” who actually stopped the cannon from firing.

In the corridor, Elfe sees the dead bodies of her AVALANCHE comrades and swears to avenge them. Player Turk ascertains that somebody already stopped the cannon; Elfe enters and confronts them, thinking that the Turk killed the AVALANCHE men. Yet another Curbstomp Battle ensues; after being quickly defeated, the Turk runs away. Elfe pursues them and corners them at the shore.

Sephiroth arrives and attacks Elfe, saving the Turk from certain death. Elfe manages to block Sephiroth’s attack, which impresses him. She introduces herself to Sephiroth as the leader of AVALANCHE and asks him an Armor-Piercing Question: “Why do you fight?”, then retreats. Sephiroth tells the Turk that he senses exceptional energy coming from Elfe and advises the Turks not to take her lightly.

Reno, meanwhile, defeats the remaining AVALANCHE members. Seeing that he was the sole survivor of the whole fight, he decided to call it a day.

Veld praises everyone’s work. The player Turk argues that they didn’t do too much personally, but Veld reassures them that they did as much as they could before Sephiroth intervened. Then Veld orders everyone to rest up for the next mission.

Several days later, Veld gives Reno and Rude their new orders: recruit new candidates for SOLDIER to fight the AVALANCHE threat. Rude orders the player Turk to come with them.

    Chapter 4: Proof of a Scar-Filled Existence
The player Turk enters the Club Duel. The club’s champion, King, throws an open challenge. The Turk approaches the King, casually taking away a rude patron with one punch. King, a cocky fighter with No Indoor Voice, asks the Turk what they want; the Turk says that they’re going to recruit everyone here as SOLDIER candidates, using force if necessary.

Year 0001/03/16

PM 3:00

Costa del Sol was the last place the Turks came for the recruits, after weeks of searching. Reno and Rude wait for the player Turk to complete their task at the Club Duel, discussing their performance in the meantime. Reno implies that not all SOLDIER candidates were conscripted willingly.

In the Club Duel, another patron mocks the player Turk and challenges them to a fight. After the Turk makes quick work of him, King declares that the strongest person in the club decides all the rules. The Turk challenges him for the supremacy and, defeating him, conscripts all club members to SOLDIER.

Reno decides to take a quick nap while Rude debriefs the player Turk. The Turk is puzzled by forced recruitment for SOLDIER, having assumed that everyone volunteers. Rude explains that sometimes they have to use force, and they have no control over that. The Turk asks Rude whether he and Reno were considered for SOLDIER; Rude dodges the question, saying that only a handful of those gathered by the Turks would actually join the organization.

There’s noise from the ship’s hold, and the player Turk runs to investigate. Reno warns them that there’s one man there they should be careful about. In the hold, the Turk sees that everyone has been knocked out, and an unknown man just took King down in one hit. The man challenges the Turk to a fight, saying that he only thrives in the heat of the battle, then introduces himself as Azul.

Azul is impressed by the Turk’s strength but states his intentions to escape and travel the world looking for battles. Rude enters and subdues him, then leads the Turk back to the deck. Tseng calls and warns them that AVALANCHE is heading to the Costa del Sol docks. Rude leaves to stop the threat, ordering the player Turk to stay and make sure nobody from AVALANCHE gets on board.

Shears prepares an attack on the Turks’ ship. Player Turk repels the assault from the ordinary members but loses sight of Shears. Shears manages to sneak onto the ship and open the hold with the SOLDIER candidates, warning them of horrors of the Mako infusions.

The candidates escape. Rude and the player Turk confront Shears. The Turk goes to fetch Reno, but Rude stops them, confident that he’d be able to fight Shears alone, and orders them to catch the escaped candidates instead. Shears goads Rude into a fight.

Reno goes down and finds Rude down on the floor. Rude refuses to tell him what happened, instead asking him to go find the candidates.

The player Turk, meanwhile, searches for the escaped men. One of them hides in a nondescript house; after losing a fight, he tells that the others have hidden in the bar.

The Turk defeats another SOLDIER candidate in the bar and goes back to the ship, meeting Rude at the gangplank. Tseng contacts them with an update on AVALANCHE’s movements: their ship is at the beach, and Shears is there too. The Turk wants to go to the beach and investigate, but Rude suddenly knocks them unconscious. He wants to settle the score with Shears himself.

Rude and Reno go to the beach to confront Shears. He’s stronger than both of them individually, but they perform some sort of Combination Attack, and Shears flees. Satisfied to have settled the score, the Turks return to the ship.

Several days later, the Turks stop at Junon to pick up another candidate – Cloud Strife.

Chapter 5: The Dreams of a Nameless Soldier
Elfe gets a report from Fuhito: their informants within Shinra determined the schedule of the person in possession of the secret data, Dr. Rayleigh, and Fuhito already dispatched his special troops for the mission.

Year 0001/06/28

AM 6:00

The player Turk arrives at the Midgar train station to meet Dr. Rayleigh. Veld tasks them to ensure Rayleigh’s safety: she has a disk with classified company secrets on her – all information on SOLDIER. The Turk introduces themselves; Cloud is among Dr. Rayleigh’s guards. The group is immediately attacked by AVALANCHE; the Turk and Cloud move to engage them. The Turk asks Cloud to step aside, but he insists on helping.

The Turk and Cloud defeat the attackers and hold a small conversation, then the Turk is attacked by another AVALANCHE grunt. Cloud tells other guards to take the doctor and run as he stays to Hold the Line. The Turk comes to his aid and then reminds him that it’s important to do what you have to do, not what you want to.

They hear a scream and see three other guards perish from death magic. The AVALANCHE mage tells Dr. Rayleigh she wouldn’t kill her, as long as she cooperates.

Veld requests a report from the Turk and tells them that the disk with SOLDIER data is more valuable than Rayleigh’s life, and it must be protected even if there are casualties. The Turk demands to let Dr. Rayleigh go; Cloud tries to stop them. While they argue, Rayleigh escapes in the confusion. Cloud chases after her. The AVALANCHE mage runs to the train, and it departs, leaving the Turk on the platform. They report back to Veld, saying they were unable to secure the disk. Veld orders them to take a shortcut through the service tunnel under Midgar.

The Turk descends into the tunnels. Veld says that if they’re fast enough, they can catch the train on foot. They manage to do exactly that and board the train at the next stop. Meeting heavy resistance, they climb to the roof of the train car. After defeating some more AVALANCHE grunts, they catch up with Cloud and Rayleigh. The Turk defeats the captors; Cloud angrily asks whether the Turk came to put Dr. Rayleigh in danger again.

Veld calls again and warns that the AVALANCHE mages with death magic are on the way. The only thing that’s known about them is that they work for Fuhito. Veld instructs the Turk to get the data and escape.

The death mages arrive. The Turk hangs up on Veld, tells Cloud and Rayleigh to run to the next car, then disconnects it from the train, leaving Rayleigh in Cloud’s care. Facing the impossible odds, the Turk again escapes to the roof, then jumps off the train. An AVALANCHE fighter attacks Cloud from behind, knocking him out, and tries to take Dr. Rayleigh, but the Turk arrives and defeats him.

The Turk leaves the car to assess the situation and sees more AVALANCHE members closing in. Cloud, meanwhile, tells himself, “If I can’t save even one life, I don’t belong in SOLDIER”, and runs out to help the Turk. He briefly becomes playable and takes out all four AVALANCHE mooks. The Turk is suitably impressed; Cloud, however, says he can’t remember how he did this.

The player Turk and Cloud return to the train car to see that the AVALANCHE man defeated by the Turk before isn’t there, and Dr. Rayleigh is knocked down. Rayleigh says that the AVALANCHE man got up and took the disk from her. However, it’s securely locked, and only Rayleigh knows how to unlock it.

The AVALANCHE member with the disk reports to his squadmates. Meanwhile, Cloud asks the player Turk why they disconnected the cars. The Turk says that Cloud taught them something important without really knowing it. Cloud asks the Turk to “do him a favour” and keep doing their best. Then the Turk gets recalled to the HQ, and Cloud says he’s going to inspect a malfunctioning Mako reactor.

Fuhito reports to Elfe, saying they were successful in retrieving the disk and decrypting its contents. He says he needs to contact Professor Hojo, the man who knows most about Sephiroth.

Chapter 6: Tonight In Our Unspoilt World

Year 0001/12/22

PM 10:00

After a routine patrol, Reno, Rude and player Turk get ready to go home. Rude says he’s “got to do something” and goes away. Reno, thinking that Rude is acting weird, sends the player Turk to investigate. The Turk is baffled, but Reno says that it’s an order.

The Turk searches Sector 8 for clues and learns that Rude bought a big bouquet of flowers and then went to the bar. There, the Turk sees Rude on a date with a woman named Chelsea. Rude looks really happy with her.

Next day, Rude goes off again. Reno asks the player Turk what they managed to learn, and the Turk tells him about Rude’s girlfriend. Reno goes to the bar, and the Turk gets a call from Veld. There are monsters in Sector 8, and the Turk is sent out to investigate.

While the Turk fights the monsters, Reno goes to the bar. Rude is in a bad mood and orders a stiff drink from the bartender. While Rude goes to the bathroom, Reno sees Chelsea peeking into Rude’s phone, saying "she can't do that". Rude returns and tells Chelsea he wants to tell her something but wants to delay it until tomorrow, when they meet at the lighting of the tree in the park. Then Chelsea suddenly leaves. Reno follows her through the streets and sees her disappear into an underground passage. He goes down there and sees Chelsea talking to an AVALANCHE member.

Reno learns that Chelsea was trying to set a wiretap on Rude’s phone, unsuccessfully. She promises her AVALANCHE contact to do it tomorrow. Reno wonders briefly if Chelsea didn’t do it when she did have a chance because she genuinely liked Rude.

Next evening, Rude goes away as usual. Reno tries to warn him that his girlfriend is an AVALANCHE spy, but Rude interrupts him and says he knows what he’s doing.

Veld orders Reno and player Turk to go monster hunting again. Reno tells the Turk that he’s worried about Rude. The Turk sees Chelsea use the underground passage again and follows her. Chelsea says her AVALANCHE contact that she cannot do this anymore and wants to quit. The contact attacks Chelsea, but the Turk intervenes and saves her.

Chelsea confesses that she works for AVALANCHE. She was ordered to befriend Rude and get information from him, but ultimately fell in love with him for real. She didn’t come to the date with Rude today and says she wouldn’t go. Chelsea cannot date her enemy from the Turks, so she asks the player Turk to do her a favour: tell him that when she’s reborn, she’ll meet him again.

The Turk goes to Rude and tells him Chelsea wouldn’t come. Rude understands what happened. Reno comes too, and the Turks return to the headquarters.

The executive meeting of Shinra begins. Reeve reports that his department repaired the Mako cannon in Junon and reset the security, and the city is still being repaired around the clock. President Shinra asks why isn’t anything done to combat the AVALANCHE threat and turns to Veld for answers. Veld says that the Turks are working at full capacity and are concentrated on AVALANCHE almost exclusively. Shinra tells him to hire more Turks if necessary. Veld answers that they need cooperation from SOLDIER to operate effectively. Rufus casts suspicion over the Turks, asking why the AVALANCHE always know where the Turks are going to be, and advises caution.

After the meeting, Veld contacts the Turks and tells them they need more manpower to survey the AVALANCHE activity more effectively. He sends Reno and Rude after Fuhito’s special forces, and the player Turk is tasked with scouting new potential Turk recruits.

Chapter 7: The Darkness Obscuring the Light

Year 0002/01/14

AM 2:00

Two SOLDIER operatives, Essai and Sebastian, reach the Icicle base and get ambushed by AVALANCHE. Sebastian attacks one of them and gets quickly knocked out. Then Essai gets curb-stomped too.

Tseng reports to President Shinra that they lost communication with both their own operatives and SOLDIERs. Veld is incredulous that someone would be so strong as to kidnap a SOLDIER. The player Turk is dispatched to Icicle with a support.

Tseng contacts the player Turk and says that the front base at Icicle was taken, probably by AVALANCHE. The SOLDIER operatives have gone missing too. The Turk navigates the ice labyrinth and reaches the compound.

President Shinra is impatient and orders an assault on the compound, despite the imperfect information.

The Turk arrives into the compound and hears that there’s an intruder in another part of building; the AVALANCHE guards depart to combat that threat. After some searching, the Turk finds two kidnapped SOLDIERs in big capsules and releases them. The SOLDIERs tell them that there were only two AVALANCHE operatives facing them, and yet they defeated them soundly. There are AVALANCHE members in other capsules, so they presumably don’t do anything harmful. The Turk sends the SOLDIERs on their way and contacts Tseng, asking him whether they should destroy the capsules. Upon learning that there’s a lot of such capsules in the compound, Tseng tells the player Turk not to do anything.

AVALANCHE grunts appear and attack the Turk. After defeating them, the player Turk meets another Turk operative in the corridor. He’s already completed the survey and says they can go. They escape through monster-infested corridors and then fight some AVALANCHE men on their way out.

Fuhito confronts the Turks in the open and tells them about his special forces unit, the Ravens. The capsules the player Turk found are used for regeneration; the Ravens are functionally immortal as long as they have access to those capsules.

Fuhito executes one of his own men in cold blood for failure to capture the Turks, saying that he’s merely “returning some of the planet’s energy back”. Then he shoots the other Turk, but an unknown man arrives in the truck and tells both Turks to get on if they want to live. They escape, and Fuhito orders not to pursue them.

Tseng contacts the man, turning to be yet another Turk, and tells him to go to the base. Player Turk gives their report to Veld and says that immediate action is needed. Veld asks for all the data they gathered.

The new Turk introduces himself to other operatives. He says he lives around these places and was already on his way to Midgar when he got the call. He’s a former mercenary, so he’s used to such kind of tight situations.

President Shinra demands another report from Veld. After confirming that this was indeed the right place, he orders to dispatch Sephiroth there, but Sephiroth is unavailable, as is the president’s next choice, Zack – he’s away on the same mission as Sephiroth. Shinra orders to recall him anyway, then declares to the army that this compound must be destroyed at any costs.

Chapter 8: A Light That Penetrates the Darkness

Year 0002/01/16

AM 11:00

The squad led by SOLDIERs squad attacks the AVALANCHE base. They are ordered to destroy it no matter what. They wake up Zack Fair who took a nap on the back seat of the truck; he explains that he got so bored waiting for everyone that he fell asleep. Zack introduces himself to the player Turk. Essai says that now that Zack is here, the battle is going to be a piece of cake, but Zack disagrees. He wants everyone to make it back alive. The player Turk is taken aback by Zack’s Mildly Military attitude, but Sebastian assures them he’s a real pro.

They encounter a monster on the way to the base. The Turk kills it; Zack orders Essai to stay with them until the trucks cross the shaky bridge. The Turk and Essai fight the monsters as the trucks cross over. Zack comes to the Turks’s aid as the old wooden bridge finally collapses, and they both fall down.

Zack and the player Turk get separated from the others and make their way through a huge ice cavern. If the Turk is female, Zack flirts with her a bit. They dispose of several more monsters; Zack briefly considers joining the Turks. They discuss Essai and Sebastian as they walk. As they near their destination, the player Turk kills two monsters, but Zack prefers to just shoo his pair away, saying he’s not going to kill anybody if he doesn’t really have to.

Meanwhile, the road is barricaded by a tree. Essai and Sebastian leave the trucks and decide they need to go on foot. The squad is then ambushed by AVALANCHE. They dispose of all Shinra troops, then the Raven named Kyneugh knocks out both SOLDIERs, and Fuhito orders him to take them to the base and put them into capsules again.

Zack and player Turk reach the ambush place and find the wounded Shinra troopers. They tell them that the Ravens kidnapped Essai and Sebastian. Zack goes to the base to rescue them as the Turk contacts Veld, telling him that the SOLDIERs were kidnapped. Veld briefly muses about the possibility of a leak, but then dismisses it, since only Shinra executives knew about the mission. He orders the Turk to head to the base with Zack.

As they reach the base, Veld orders the player Turk to check the capsule room again. The Turk rescues Essai and Sebastian from the capsules, but they suddenly attack. Zack arrives and tries to reason with them, but they attack him as well. Zack still tries to talk them down, saying that he’s happy to see them alive. He seemingly succeeds in making them remember, and then they snap out of their conditioning and collapse. Essai says he’s glad to talk to Zack one last time, then they fall silent and die.

A self-destruct system is activated. The player Turk urges Zack to escape, but he tells them to go ahead, saying he’d stay with his comrades a little longer. After the Turk leaves, Zack calls out Kyneugh, who’s been hiding in the room the whole time. Zack tries to talk to him, but, seeing that the Raven has lost any semblance of humanity, declares him a monster and kills him, avenging Essai and Sebastian’s death.

Exiting the room, Zack finds the Turk waiting. They escape the facility, and it soon explodes. Zack asks the Turk whether they can make it to the base by themselves, again saying he’s going to stay a little longer to do something. Zack thrusts Essai and Sebastian’s swords into the ground as a Weapon Tombstone and promises to come back to them.

Rufus Shinra tells his father that someone is clearly leaking information to AVALANCHE. The president sees this as Veld’s failure and relieves him of his duty as the head of the Department of Administrative Research.

The Turks convene in Veld’s office. Tseng angrily says that the failure of the last mission had nothing to do with Veld. Veld says that he can’t argue with the president’s decisions, then assigns Tseng as his successor.

Chapter 9: One Step Further Toward Uncertainty

Turks headquarters

06:00 PM

The Turks wonder what happens to them now. Tseng says that they’re operating under control of a department head, no matter who might that be. Heidegger, head of the Public Safety Maintenance Department, enters and declares that he’s in charge of the Turks now. He orders them to patrol the streets of Junon and prevent possible AVALANCHE activity. He’s acting dismissively towards the Turks in general.

Tseng goes to Veld and says he can’t accept Veld’s dismissal. Veld says that someone did leak the information to AVALANCHE, and one of the Turks’ duties is keeping secret information secret, so this was his failure as well. Tseng still tries to argue, but Veld sends him away, saying he’s not his superior and not a Turk anymore. Tseng asks Veld to watch over them.

The player Turk patrols the streets of Junon. The morale is down ever since Heidegger was put in charge. Player Turk, Reno, Rude and Tseng report to Heidegger; he orders them to patrol and call him as soon as they spot anything suspicious so that he can deploy the army.

Player Turk spots some AVALANCHE soldiers on the beach and decides to engage them on their own. Defeating them, the Turk discovers an AVALANCHE ship and briefly considers calling Heidegger, but decides to call Reno first. Reno says that he would be glad to provide backup, but AVALANCHE has penetrated his sector as well.

Tseng contacts Veld and asks him for help. Veld tells him that he’s not a Turk anymore and advises to contact Heidegger, then hangs up.

Heidegger calls the player Turk and blames them for AVALANCHE’s successful operation, then orders them to get to the airport – AVALANCHE are after the airplanes and airships. At the airport, AVALANCHE men confront the Turk and boasts that their life is much easier now that Heidegger has them running in circles. This was supposed to be secret information.

Tseng contacts the player Turk and says that the Shinra army is on the way, and they should hold off the AVALANCHE for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, Veld becomes playable. He comes to President Shinra and speaks to him. Veld says that he knows so much classified information that if he were to start leaking it, the company would crumble quickly, and demands to be put back into the command of the Turks. He promises that the top-secret directive would be safe with him no matter what happens, and the president agrees to reinstate him.

Veld calls all the Turks with the news of his return to command. He orders Tseng to keep track on the Ravens, sends Reno to the control tower, tells Rude to clear a path for Reno, and tasks the player Turk with fighting the AVALANCHE operatives in the airships.

Player Turk eliminates some AVALANCHE grunts, then comes across another novice Turk who was summoned by Veld to help them. Reno informs the player Turk that they have secured the control tower. The Turk gets attacked by a Raven, but defeats them and rendezvouses with the other Turks. Veld congratulates them with a successful mission, and they head back to the headquarters.

President Shinra asks Veld whether there’s any progress on the thing he told Veld to investigate. Veld says there’s none currently, but only an executive can leak that much information from Shinra. The president tells him about his suspicions of Hojo.

Chapter 10: The Lone Discerning Alignment

Veld commands all Turks to get ready to move out: there’s a monster outbreak right inside the Shinra headquarters. These monsters are the samples from Professor Hojo’s lab – someone must have let them out. Tseng takes over the employee evacuation, while the player Turk goes to engage the monsters. The monster research project is highly classified, meaning only the Turks can take care of the problem without dropping secrecy.

The player Turk gets to the top floors and eliminates monsters there. As they enter Hojo’s lab, they encounter Kyneugh, seemingly killed by Zack earlier, together with Shears and Fuhito. Shears approaches Hojo, but Hojo brushes him off, saying he’d “gathered important field data” after someone released his monsters. Fuhito tells Hojo that AVALANCHE released the monsters and offers him data on “fighters whose strength far exceeds SOLDIER”. Fuhito offers Hojo to defect from Shinra and continue his work with AVALANCHE, then they notice the player Turk.

The Turk fights Kyneugh with Hojo watching. They can’t hurt Kyneugh at all due to his increased Healing Factor; Fuhito tells Hojo that Kyneugh would revive no matter how many times he gets taken down. Hojo says he’s interested to hear the AVALANCHE men out, and they escort him away. The Turk flees from Kyneugh and contacts Veld, who tells them to head for the roof.

Meanwhile, the Shinra executives learn that AVALANCHE abducted Hojo. President Shinra fears that if Hojo’s knowledge goes public, it will doom the company. Both Shinra and his son tell Veld that Hojo can’t be trusted, since all he cares about is his research, and if he gets the right offer, he’d easily reveal any information. President Shinra orders to call Sephiroth, but Rufus and Veld say that he’d attract too much attention to the situation. Shinra angrily says that it’s the Turks’ job to keep such things quiet and orders to bring in Sephiroth anyway.

The Turk, meanwhile, reaches the roof and attacks the helicopter. They manage to damage it, but the AVALANCHE men still get away with Hojo on board. Veld orders the Turk to go down to the first floor immediately and pursue the helicopter on a land vehicle. As they go down, Tseng meets them in a truck. Tseng says that he got Reno and the others to work on the evacuation.

Tseng and the player Turk catch up with the helicopter and get attacked by AVALANCHE members on motorbikes. They fend off the attack, but the helicopter tries gets away again. Meanwhile, Fuhito tells Hojo about his work. Shears doesn’t take it too well when Hojo refers to Elfe as a “test sample”, but Fuhito rebukes him. Shears still protests loudly, and Fuhito sends him away to fight the Turks.

Shears parachutes down from the helicopter and blows away the road with a bomb. The Turks’ track crashes; the player Turk survives but has no sight of Tseng. Shears appears and attacks the Turk. After another Hopeless Boss Fight, Shears takes the Turk down, but the AVALANCHE helicopter is already waiting for him, and so Shears does not execute the Turk.

Hojo says that Elfe would be a good sample for his work and then asks Fuhito about the facilities AVALANCHE have. Fuhito promises that they are at least equal to what he has at Shinra and says that “for AVALANCHE, everything is possible”, since they have a powerful benefactor.

The player Turk recovers and chases the helicopter on foot. In the second Hopeless Boss Fight in a row, they get taken down by a dragon-like creature, which then gets promptly cut down by Sephiroth. Hojo is rather disappointed with the showing but says that the dragon just met with a wrong target.

Sephiroth takes down the helicopter (probably with his Materia), and they reconvene with Professor Hojo and Tseng on the bridge. Sephiroth tells the Turks to take care of the rest and walks away. Hojo tells him he’d become stronger, but Sephiroth doesn’t answer. Hojo muses about Sephiroth and Elfe, saying “there are many marvelous things in the world”.

An unknown person talks to Elfe, saying they were too rash, and they didn’t tell AVALANCHE to raid the Shinra building. Fuhito brings up the Junon mako cannon operation, but the mysterious benefactor says that this battle was supposed to be lost. Elfe apologizes, and the unknown person says AVALANCHE shouldn’t make any moves without consulting them, then says that if they hadn’t warned AVALANCHE about Sephiroth, they’d be all doomed.

Then they say that the Ancient girl had been located, the last survivor of the race. This is a Shinra top secret, and AVALANCHE wouldn’t have a chance to learn that on their own. Fuhito says that he’s very interested in Ancients, and Elfe says that the Ancient is now their next target. The unknown person assures them that she would tell them about the Promised Land.

Chapter 11: The Dash of Freedom

Year 0002/8/9

AM 1:00

Player Turk gets left behind in the Midgar slums. They have a day off tomorrow, so they don’t rush to go home. They get to a house they don’t recognize, with flowers growing around it and everything very bright, despite it being middle of the night.

A girl leaves the house and says that she wants to see the world outside Midgar. Aerith recognizes the Turk’s uniform and quickly rushes off, but soon runs back with AVALANCHE members pursuing her. The Turk defeats the AVALANCHE agents, then tells Aerith she doesn’t need to fear them. The Turk asks why AVALANCHE was after her, but she doesn’t know. Aerith is surprised that the Turk doesn’t know who she is and asks them what are they doing in the slums. The Turk says that they were just looking at the flowers; Aerith tells that she planted all of them.

More AVALANCHE members attack; the Turk drags the girl with them. An AVALANCHE agent reports to Elfe that they found the Ancient, but a Turk has taken her. Elfe orders to recover the girl at all costs, but whatever they do, not hurt the Ancient. Shears is surprised that the Turks protected the ancient, but Fuhito says that it was probably wasn’t planned.

The Turk hides with Aerith down in the slums and asks what was she doing alone in the middle of the night. She says that the wind was calling her to go journeying and learn what the world outside Midgar is like. The Turk says that they travel a lot, but only because their work requires that. They tell Aerith that other cities look different from Midgar, and she wonders what kind of flowers grow there.

Then she says she dropped her Materia and would like to go back and recover it. The Turk offers her one of theirs instead, but Aerith says she needs her Materia, and nothing else – this is the only thing she got from her real mother. Shears appears and says that the girl is coming with him “to protect her from the scum like the Turks”. He defeats the Turk in yet another Hopeless Boss Fight and takes Aerith away.

Veld tells President Shinra he’d send Tseng to apprehend Aerith. Shinra points out that they were unsuccessfully trying to capture her for years. Rufus offers to send out the army, since the Turks are only wasting time and effort, saying that the Ancient wouldn’t be able to resist if a bullet is put into her. Veld says that they need to learn the location of Promised Land from her, and President Shinra adds that if they harm Aerith before getting necessary information from her, all their efforts would be wasted.

Shears leads Aerith to the church, where she meets Elfe and Fuhito. Elfe introduces herself as the leader of an anti-Shinra organization; Aerith says she didn’t come willingly, and they’re even worse than Shinra. Shears insists that they were protecting her from being caught by Shinra, but Aerith says that the opposite is true. Elfe apologizes and makes Aerith an offer.

The Turk enters the church and sees Aerith in the company of the AVALANCHE leaders. They listen in to the conversation; Fuhito says that AVALANCHE want to topple Shinra and stop them from using Mako reactors. Learning the Aerith is an Ancient, player Turk remembers that Tseng was assigned with her capture a while ago. Elfe asks Aerith to tell them where the Promised Land is, but she says she doesn’t know. Aerith suddenly recognized “an old voice” within Elfe; Elfe says that she can’t remember anything prior to joining AVALANCHE. Aerith says that she never met Elfe before, but the voice inside her is familiar… and is in pain.

Shears detects the player Turk’s presence and chases them away. The Turk comes to a dead end on the roof, and Shears throws them down, on the flower field. Aerith tries to stop Fuhito and Shears from stepping on the flowers, but they attack the Turk at once. They easily take the Turk down, but Aerith yells at them to stop. She stands over the Turk to protect them and refuses to move.

Elfe is suddenly unwell. Aerith asks what’s wrong with her, and Fuhito says that she’s got an illness that can be cured in the Promised Land. Then Fuhito and Shears escort Elfe away. Aerith checks on the Turk, and the Turk advises her to go “to a place where nobody can find her”. They say that Shinra are after Aerith too. Aerith asks them whether they want to know about the Promised Land too, but the Turk says they aren’t interested, and they’re off duty anyway. Aerith says that she’s not going to run because this would be “letting them win”, and the flowers either here in the church or in her garden wouldn’t grow without her tending to them.

The Turk leaves the church with Aerith and meets Tseng. Tseng is shocked to see them together. The player Turk tells Aerith to run home and confronts Tseng, telling him not to go after her. Tseng says he’s not going to do anything to her. He wasn’t going to capture her by force, wanting to talk her into cooperation instead, because Aerith’s cooperation can save the world. But Aerith wants nothing to do with Shinra. Still, Tseng says he’s going to wait as long as needed for her.

Veld reports of an emergency: all the employees at the Nibelheim reactor have disappeared. President Shinra orders him to investigate that since the Nibelheim reactor is an important historical site, Shinra’s first-ever Mako reactor. There’s also something inside that cannot be made public.

Chapter 12: The Awakening of the Dark Harbinger

Year 0002/9/21

PM 6:00

The player Turk and Tseng are in the helicopter approaching the Nibelheim reactor. Tseng says it was built 50 years ago and has fallen into disrepair due to age. Then Tseng instructs the player Turk to investigate what really happened there.

The player Turk parachutes away, but a strong wind blows them to the top of Mount Nibel. Tseng gives them directions by phone, and they begin their descent through the monster-infested mountain. They soon encounter Tifa Lockhart attacked by monsters and help her. Tifa was in the mountain because her cat ran away. The Turk tells her to wait until they’re back from the Shinra business to escort her back to town.

There’s a dragon at the reactor. The Turk flees and calls Tseng with the news. Tseng orders them to back off and says he’d discuss the further investigation with Veld, but the player Turk says that he’s gone somewhere, and nobody can reach him. Tseng says he’d find a way and orders the Turk to go back to town and await instructions.

The Turk gets back to Tifa and shows her a special ropeway that Shinra employees used to get to the reactor, telling that townspeople are unaware of its existence. As they go down in the cable car, Tifa asks the Turk whether they knew a boy named Cloud. The Turk tells her they met a Cloud on another mission; Tifa reveals that he left the town two years ago, intending to join SOLDIER.

In a flashback, Cloud says he wants to become a SOLDIER, as strong as Sephiroth. Tifa asks Cloud to save her if he gets famous, and she’s ever in a bind.

The cable car suddenly stops. It’s attacked by the dragon! The Turk tells Tifa to grab on them and jump. They survive the fall, but Tifa’s cat briefly goes missing again. It quickly reappears, much to Tifa’s joy, and she and player Turk plan to escape the mountain. The Turk reports to Tseng that the dragon attacked their cable car, rendering it unusable. Tseng tells them that Sephiroth and his company were sent to inspect the reactor, by President Shinra’s decision. Tseng was unable to reach Veld, so there was no other choice. The Turk is ordered to find a guide that knows the way through Mount Nibel.

The Turk asks Tifa to act as a guide for the investigation team. Tifa refuses, saying that the path is full of monsters. The Turk tells that Sephiroth is leading the team, and going with him is probably safer than staying in the village. Tifa immediately changes her mind. They reach the village safely, and the Turk runs into familiar faces – Zack Fair, Sephiroth and Cloud, who’s wearing a helmet to hide his face. Zack is surprised that the Turk knows Cloud, but the Turk says they were once on a mission together.

Sephiroth tells Zack they need to plan for tomorrow; Cloud gets the rest of the day off to visit relatives. The player Turk deduces that he’s the Cloud that Tifa was talking about, the one who left Nibelheim to join SOLDIER. After learning that Tifa is going to be their guide for tomorrow, Cloud is suddenly anxious and asks what the Turk told Tifa about him. The Turk says that they weren’t sure if Tifa asks about the same Cloud, so they told her nothing. Cloud sheepishly asks the Turk not to tell Tifa he’s back. The Turk remembers the promise Cloud made to Tifa and understands why he doesn’t want to be recognized.

Next morning, the investigation team goes up to the Nibelheim reactor and then back. The Turk asks for the report, but Sephiroth immediately disappears in the inn. Zack tells the Turk that Sephiroth was acting strangely during the investigation.

Several days passed. Sephiroth locked himself in the hotel room and didn’t get out. Tseng asks the player Turk what triggered his apparent change in behaviour; the Turk says that it was something he saw inside the reactor. Tseng orders the Turk to keep an eye on Sephiroth and report if anything changes.

Then the Turk wakes up to see Nibelheim burning. It was Sephiroth’s doing. The Turk follows Sephiroth to the reactor, and Tseng says they’re going there as well. Meanwhile, Tifa sees the burning town and runs towards the reactor as well with her cat in tow. Zack rushes after her.

Inside the reactor, the player Turk confronts Sephiroth. Sephiroth calls them a traitor and says that the burning of Nibelheim was just a start. His “Mother” was supposed to rule the world, but it was stolen from her. He calls himself the chosen one to rule the world and says he’s going to take the planet back and rid it from the usurpers, and it’s only a matter of time before he destroys all humans. He doesn’t attack the Turk straight away, however, giving them a chance to flee. The Turk runs towards Sephiroth, and everything fades to black.

The Turk is gravely wounded. Someone comes to check out on them, then says Tifa is there as well.Seeing the wounded Tifa, Cloud gets infuriated with Sephiroth and runs into the reactor. Tifa’s cat is alive and runs away; the Turk recovers and checks on Tifa. They tell her that Cloud did make good on his promise to rescue her. Zangan, Tifa’s martial arts instructor, arrives and says Tifa’s cat lead him there. Player Turk tells Zangan to take Tifa away and says they’re staying in the reactor since there are still people in there.

As the Turk goes up to the reactor, they see a wounded Zack. Zack, keeping a brave facade, says he’s fine, but worried about Cloud, who went inside the reactor. The Turk sees Cloud, impaled by Sephiroth’s sword, sliding down the blade and throwing Sephiroth at the wall. Cloud collapses. Sephiroth goes up, says he’s going to take the planet back together with his mother, and jumps into the Lifestream. The Turk contacts Tseng and briefs him on the new developments.

Sephiroth says he’d gain the knowledge of the Lifestream and new powers.
