Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 8 Trust Destiny

Go To

Ryan, Sophie, and Luke deal with the fallout from losing both Wayne Enterprises and access to the Batcave. Marquis begins flaunting his takeover of Wayne Enterprises. Mary takes advice from Alice on how to sever connections with Ryan and Luke for good.

Tropes:

  • Apologetic Attacker: In the flashbacks, Montoya is heartbroken about taking out Pamela.
  • Batman Gambit: By the end of the episode we learn that Montoya has been playing one. She coerced Batwoman and Alice into working together, ostensibly to track down all the missing Bat-villain trophies - a mission she knew they could never complete because she herself had the last one (Joker's buzzer). Her real goal was for Batwoman and Alice, in the process of tracking down the trophies, to eventually discover where Batman buried Poison Ivy, so that she could free the love of her life.
  • Batter Up!: When Ryan, Sophie and Montoya dispatch of a bunch of Marquis's thugs, Montoya uses a baseball bat she finds lying around.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted with Pamela, after years of being kept under the Batcave in a desiccated state.
Ryan: So she doesn't think it's a trophy?
  • Big Bad Friend: Mary wants to be this, so she happily tells Marquis that Ryan is Batwoman and Luke is Batwing. She is dismayed when Ryan ends up using the dehydration chemical on Marquis (who is holding Luke at gunpoint) rather than her.
  • Body Horror: The anti-Poison Ivy serum desiccates living tissue, leaving the victim comatose and barely alive until they can be rehydrated. When used on Marquis, Luke isn't even sure he can be revived, lacking Poison Ivy's physiology.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The dead tree that's been prominent in the middle of the Batcave since the pilot turns out to be marking the spot where Poison Ivy was buried.
  • Clark Kenting: Averted. Ryan, Sophie and Luke attend Marquis's party wearing only standard masquerade masks, but Sophie and Luke intentionally stay in the background so he won't recognize them. Ryan needs to confront Marquis to get his retina scans, but her mask has special electronics in it to mask her identity, combined with Ryan's French accent to throw off the new CEO. Marquis eventually does find Luke, but doesn't really care that he's there until Mary tells him he's Batwing.
  • The Corrupter: Alice keeps egging Mary on to become more villainous.
  • Dating Catwoman: Flashbacks depict how Montoya was in a long-term relationship with Pamela Isley while the latter was a wanted criminal she was supposed to be hunting down.
  • Death by Secret Identity: While Marquis isn't dead, merely comatose (kind of), he conveniently gets taken out of the picture for a while after learning Batwoman and Batwing's identities.
  • Dude Where Is My Respect: Mary is seen getting drunk over Ryan still not taking her seriously when she uses the dehydration chemical on Marquis instead of her.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Ryan realizing that Poison Ivy is actually kept under the Batcave.
  • Fake Nationality: Ryan's false identity for the party, Penelope Devereaux, is French.
  • Flashback: Throughout the episode, going 10 years back, when Montoya was forced to put Pamela out of commission after she first injured her partner and then refused to give up her plans of flooding Gotham.
  • Hostage Situation: As Mary and Batwoman have their confrontation, Marquis busts in, holding Luke at gunpoint. Batwoman uses the potion to take out Marquis and save Luke rather than on Mary, driving her further into Pamela Isley's arms.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Montoya berating Ryan on being too soft with taking down Mary, when she actually planned on finding and freeing Pamela.
    • Mary tells Marquis about Batwoman and Batwing as a backup plan to get Ryan off her back. When Marquis comes in holding Luke at gunpoint and Ryan decides saving Luke's life is more important than stopping Mary for now, Mary complains that she meant less to Ryan than Luke at the moment, even though he'd be dead and she's the one put him in that situation, even though she didn't need to out Luke at all.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Pamela, in a flashback, shoots a vine through the gut of a police officer when he tries to draw a gun on her. Montoya later mentions that it cost him a kidney.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Marquis learns that Ryan is Batwoman (and that Luke is Batwing).
    • Renee Montoya learns that Bruce Wayne was Batman.
  • Ironic Echo: Mary tries to talk Ryan out of using the desiccation serum on her, but Ryan insists Mary has given her no choice. When Marquis shows up and reveals he knows her and Luke's secret identities, Mary admits to telling him because Ryan "gave [her] no choice."
  • Irony: Mary remarks how she was always overlooked by Ryan and her friends, but now that she actually wants to be left alone, they keep following her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Montoya may sound harsh when she insists that Ryan abandon the kid gloves and take down Poison Mary, but she's right that it's necessary to do whatever it takes to protect the citizens of Gotham from a potential Poison Ivy attack. She's also not wrong when she says that Marquis should have been arrested and put in Arkham, which would have prevented him from taking over Wayne Enterprises and cutting off access to the Batcave.
  • Mythology Gag: Ivy's regular outfit is essentially an adaptation of her Arkham games outfit.
  • Oh, Crap!: Luke, when Marquis calls him Batwing.
  • Out of Focus: Alice only appears in the beginning and end of the episode.
  • The Reveal:
    • Batman buried Poison Ivy in the Batcave.
    • Montoya secretly had the last Batman trophy - Joker's buzzer - all along, which implies that she never intended Ryan and Alice's coerced mission for her to be complete until they found Pamela.
  • Sadistic Choice: Batwoman has to choose between either neutralizing Mary until they can cure her or stopping Marquis from killing Luke. She chooses to use the serum on Marquis to take him out, allowing her to return him to Jada.
  • Snipe Hunt: Turns out Joker's buzzer had been with Montoya all along, she used it as a means to keep Ryan looking for Pamela.
  • That Woman Is Dead: Poison Ivy tells Montoya that the woman she used to be is no more.
  • Title Drop: By Marquis.
  • Unseen No More: Pamela finally appears.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: In line with most modern depictions of her, Poison Ivy is one. Her plan, ten years ago, was to destroy Gotham Dam and flood large parts of the city to enable plant life to thrive.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Alice of all people gives Mary one, telling Mary that caring for her actually cured her of her own psychotic episodes.
