Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 2 Loose Teeth

Go To

A new Killer Croc is born when someone stumbles upon the original's lost tooth and is infected by the same virus.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: Between Luke and Mary.
  • Blatant Lies: Jada Jet sees right through Ryan when the latter lies about not knowing anything about the espionage.
  • Blood Is Squicker in Water: Killer Croc attacking the teens in the pool leaves it full of blood.
  • Call-Back:
    • Towards last episode. Mary objects when her friends keep using the word "crazy".
    • Alice also references her killing Mabel Cartwright.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Double Subverted. Alice plans to ditch Whitney at first, but her cries convince Alice to go back. However, she then simply tells the poor girl that she can only rely on herself and ditches her for real, viewing it as the same lesson she had to learn as a child.
  • Consulting a Convicted Killer: Alice's help in the case amounts to this. She deduces that Killer Croc's first murder is bizarrely brazen, when it would be more logical to attack prey that is isolated, something she is familiar with. From this, she deduces his hunting grounds from recent reports of missing persons.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Mary, when Luke takes his shirt off for her examination.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humour:
    • Alice jokes about Jada being a literal helicopter parent... minus the parent.
    • When Steven drags Mason away, Alice jokes about him having daddy issues.
  • Internal Reveal: Much revolving around Ryan being Jada Jet's daughter.
    • Despite promising Ryan not to look further into things last episode, circumstances in this episode force Sophie to tell Ryan that Jet is her birth mother.
    • Alice reveals to Ryan that she knew exactly who Ryan's mother was the whole time, not just that she was alive.
    • At the end of the episode, Ryan confronts Jada and reveals the truth to her.
  • Nanomachines: Batwing injects 1,000 of them inside Alice, so they and the GCPD can track her wherever she goes, making it pointless to run away.
  • No Body Left Behind:
    • All that's left of the two students at the beginning is blood.
    • Years ago, the GCPD blew up Waylon Johnes with a truckload of Thermite, leaving only a single tooth behind.
  • Papa Wolf: Mason, the father of the new Killer Croc Steven, is desperate to protect his son from being captured and experimented on for his condition. All it gets him is a horrible death when his mutated son mauls him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Alice, once she disables her tracker. Luke stops her, though.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Steven mauls his father to death.
  • Sequel Hook:
    • Montoya receives a fake vine, supposedly from Poison Ivy, deducing that a real one is still out there.
    • Ryan tells Jada that she is her daughter.
  • Shock and Awe: Mason, Steven's father, uses an electric cattle prod to stun Batwoman so she can't capture his son. Alice steals it to destroy her ankle bracelet, then uses it in her fight against Batwing.
  • Shout-Out: The two students at the beginning, who are eaten by Steven, make a direct reference to Aquaman existing.
  • Tragic Monster: Steven, a normal teenager who got infected by Waylon Jones's tooth. In the end, he even kills his own father out of instinct.
  • Viral Transformation: Killer Croc's condition is the result of a virus that causes him to manifest lizard traits. Getting cut by his lost tooth is sufficient to infect someone else with that virus.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Steven isn't picky about his meals.
