Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 1 Mad As A Hatter

Go To

As Luke adjusts to becoming a costumed crimefighter, Gotham is thrown into chaos thanks to the Mad Hatter's hat.

Tropes:

  • And I Must Scream: Those affected by the Mad Hatter's hat are aware of their actions, but have no choice but to act within the bounds of the commands issued.
  • Atrocious Alias: Luke at first thinks of "Black Batman" as his alias, though Ryan instantly disabuses him of the thought. They later settle on Batwing.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The audience is initially led to believe that Alice's letters from "Jacob Kane" are actually from Liam writing under his name. This turns out not to be the case, as the letters aren't even there to begin with but rather a delusion by Alice.
  • Berserk Button: Being called crazy is one for Liam.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Ryan saves Luke from a bunch of Liam's brainwashed goons.
  • Broken Pedestal: Alice becomes this to Liam when she literally backstabs him.
  • Compelling Voice: The Mad Hatter's hat makes it so the wearer can compel anyone to obey any command given, leaving them aware of what they're doing but powerless to resist, such as making a man kill his own friend.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Liam orders Mary to remove organs from the chair of her university until he dies. Fortunately, Sophie stops it.
  • Cutting the Knot: When Liam realizes that someone is transmitting a signal that is blocking his commands, he cuts the power to stop the signal and regain control.
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: Batwoman calls out Alice honestly thinking helping stop the new Hatter would make up for all she'd done and that Ryan was ever going to let her go afterward.
  • Dude Where Is My Respect: Mary, when she hears from Alice that Jacob has been writing the latter, while Mary is about to graduate medical school. Of course, he isn't really doing it.
  • Easily Forgiven: Nope. As Ryan points out, Alice helping her doesn't make up for her many, many atrocities.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The nameless guy who finds and sells the Mad Hatter's top hat never once notices all the glowing tech inside it.
  • Foreshadowing: A shot of the postcards Jacob is supposedly writing not only show that all of them have the same message, but the word choice is more consistent with Alice herself than Jacob.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Ryan breaks out Alice to help stop Liam.
  • Heroic BSoD: Luke is still suffering after-effects of his shooting, briefly freezing up in fights while blaming it on the suit.
  • Honey Trap: Ryan breaks Alice free to take out Liam, who is her biggest fan.
  • I Lied: Ryan claims she'll let Alice run if she helps, but admits she never intended to honor that deal after Alice has stopped Liam.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Alice is convinced Jacob will break her out of prison due to postcards he's been sending her. Batwoman has to break it to her that the "postcards" are just random pieces of paper Alice has collected, with Alice realizing she's been stuck in a delusion that her father cares about her.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: A doctor at Arkham tells Alice that no one will come to rescue her. Batwoman immediately arrives to break her out.
  • Internal Reveal: Ryan tells Sophie about Alice's claim that her birth mother is alive. She then helps Ryan find information on her, but Ryan decides to not look into it.
  • In the Back: Alice stabs Liam in the back during a hug, having been given signal blockers to resist his commands.
  • Kick the Dog: While testing out his new gear, Liam forces a young man to kill his friend via Slashed Throat.
  • Laughing Mad: Alice, after realizing that her dad never sent her any letters.
  • Legacy Character: This episode introduces a new Mad Hatter, Liam, who gains Compelling Voice powers from the hat of the original Mad Hatter Jervis Tetch.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Mary is forced by Liam to operate on her teacher and "remove organs until he dies." Sophie realizes that stopping his heart before Mary can do irreparable damage will fulfill the conditions of the command and free her. Sure enough, as soon as the man flatlines, Mary is freed from the Hatter's control and quickly shocks him back to life.
    • Mary herself also has some leeway in how she executes the command, deliberately targeting organs he can survive without. Liam even acknowledges she's doing it, but he thinks it's funny because she'll have to start taking vital organs eventually and is only dragging it out.
  • Mayor Pain: Mayor Akins at first dismisses Montoya's concerns regarding old Batman enemies resurfacing.
  • Monster Fangirl: Rare male version, with Liam towards Alice.
  • Mundane Utility: A bunch of weed farmers tried to purchase Ivy's vines to accelerate the growth of their crop.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By getting Alice to stop Liam, Ryan demonstrates that Alice can be useful in stopping others with the Bat-Enemies' weapons. When she double-crosses Alice to send her back to Arkham, Alice is majorly ticked off. Thus, when Montoya makes Alice an offer of freedom to help, Alice has no qualms telling Montoya who Batwoman really is to blackmail her into helping.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Subverted. It's noted that blocking the Mad Hatter's signal will only prevent him from issuing further commands, and will not free anyone already under his influence.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: When Ryan refuses to work with Alice, Montoya responds that otherwise, she'll be working "to shut down your whole vigilante operation... Ryan Wilder."
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Liam orders the graduates to strangle themselves to death with their stethoscopes. Thankfully, Alice stops it.
  • Really Gets Around: Sophie has been dating lots of girls lately.
  • Recruiting the Criminal: The episode ends with Batwoman shocked to learn Renee Montoya has gotten Alice out of Arkham to track down the stolen weapons. When Batwoman refuses, Montoya retorts that Alice has told her Ryan's real identity and Montoya will arrest her if she doesn't help.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The Mad Hatter forces Mary to describe herself as one of these for Alice.
  • Secret-Keeper: Sophie for Ryan, about her biological mom still being alive.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Ryan is forced to work together with Alice again. And at the end of the episode again, see An Offer You Can't Refuse.
  • Title Drop: The new Mad Hatter describes himself as "mad as a hatter".
  • Villain Has a Point: Mary concedes that the speech she was forced to make under Liam's thrall had some good points about the medical community.
  • Villains Never Lie: Alice's story about Ryan's mom turns out to be true.
  • Virtual Ghost: An A.I. of Lucius is apparently stored in Luke's suit.
