Tropes:

  • Character Death: Sasha is shot when Gabi sneaks onto the Scouts' zeppelin and fires into the crowd of soldiers. By the end of the episode, Connie tearfully declares that she has died, succumbing to her wound. As a usually comedic character since her debut in the first season, it's a shock that she is the one who dies at this point, adding to more drama.
  • Cycle of Revenge: As noted by several characters throughout the episode. The Marleyan Warriors attacked Paradis and wiped out a third of the people living there. Paradis in turn attacked Liberio as their declaration of war. Gabi, enraged by the destruction of her hometown, sneaks onboard the zeppelin and fires into the soldiers, killing Sasha. When Grice asks Jean if they should throw the kids overboard, Jean bitterly asks if murdering children will stop the violence.
  • Disappointed in You: Hange expresses this sentiment to Eren, pointing out that he used the Scouts' tendency to always save him to force them into attacking Marley and lost them several soldiers. She points out that, while he may have counted on his trust for the Scouts, he lost their trust in return.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Connie hugs Sasha and Jean and says that he's glad the three of them escaped safely. It was a very bad idea to say this out loud while they are still in enemy territory.
  • Enemy Mine: Zeke is apparently working with the Paradisians now, though Levi clearly would love nothing more than to carve him up.
  • Heroic RRoD: Occurs to both Eren and Reiner after their brief clash at the start of the episode. While Reiner goes down with one enhanced punch, he is able to retrieve Galliard and prevent Eren from eating him. Afterwards, Eren admits neither of them have the strength to continue fighting and declares that they will have to postpone their rematch for another time.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Falco tries to convince Gabi not to chase after the Scouts and plays Devil's Advocate by telling her that the people on Paradis suffered the same atrocity when the Warriors attacked the Walls and thus sought revenge. Gabi asks Falco if he saw this personally and, when he admits that he didn't, she tells him that she didn't either and rejects the idea that they suffered in a similar way.
  • I'll Kill You!: Gabi swears to end Eren as she pursues the Scouts' zeppelin.
  • Mole in Charge: As it turns out, Zeke, the Warchief of the Warriors, was in on the plan with Eren in order to cripple Marley and help restore Eldia to glory.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Gabi and Falco are on the receiving end of this by the Survey Corps, after Gabi shot Sasha.
  • Not So Stoic: Eren finally breaks his perpetually blank-faced streak for this season after he asks Connie for Sasha's last words, first breaking into inappropriate laughter when he remembers her stealing some officer's meat, and then having an enraged and grief-stricken expression once the weight of her loss hits him.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: As if to cement the Darker and Edgier tone of this season, Sasha, who has long been a source of comic relief in this show, is shot and killed by Gabi in revenge for the attack on Liberio.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Given that Sasha is one of the series main characters, and has survived near death before, her sudden and mundane death via being shot by Gabi is genuinely shocking.
  • Taking You with Me: Gabi, enraged over all of the deaths caused by the Scouts, sneaks onto their zeppelin with the intent to kill as many soldiers as she can before she dies. Falco pushes her out of the way before she gets shot by Jean, so she is only able to take out Sasha.
  • Tempting Fate: While bemoaning their comrades who died on the mission Connie grabs Jean and Sasha into a group hug and says that they are special to him and he is happy that they all survived. Sure enough, not ten minutes later...
  • Wham Episode: Sasha's dead, and Zeke's working with the Paradisians for something.
  • Wham Line:
    Connie: Sasha... is dead.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Many characters, either directly or indirectly, call Eren out on essentially holding himself hostage and forcing the Scouts to take part on the attack on Liberio in order to rescue him. After Sasha is killed, Jean tells Eren that her death is his fault for forcing the Scouts to rescue him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: After Gabi fatally shoots Sasha, both Falco and her receive a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. The soldiers also consider throwing them overboard, but Jean convinces them not to.
  • Would Not Hurt A Child:
    • Lobov, one of the Scouts' new recruits and the one protecting the zeppelin's rear, hesitates to shoot Gabi when he sees she's a kid. This proves fatal as Gabi doesn't hesitate.
    • After the soldiers asks Jean if they should throw Falco and Gabi overboard after the former shot Sasha, Jean tells them not to.
  • You Are Too Late: Even with bandages to mitigate the bleeding, they are unable to stop Sasha from dying.
