Recap / Attack On Titan S 4 E 7 Assault

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: One noted by Jean In-Universe; after the Thunder Spear he fires at Pieck misses, Jean wonders if it is because of the steam being released from her escaping the Cart Titan throwing off his aim or because he subconsciously held back because he didn't want to kill Falco.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Eren tears off both of the Jaw Titan's arms, leaving it helpless and unable to fight back against him.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Eren ends up forcing the Jaw Titan's jaws onto the War Hammer crystal, intending to break it. In response, Porco can only beg for Eren to stop, which fails to change his mind.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Spurred on by Gabi and Falco's cries, Reiner musters up the will to continue the fight and manages a partial transformation into his Armored Titan, which is enough to shock Eren and stop him from tearing Galliard out of his Titan and devouring him to acquire the Jaws Titan's power on top of the War Hammer.
  • The Bus Came Back: Once more. We get to see Armin and Hange for the first time after the four years time skip.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death:
    • Lara Tybur is smashed by Eren inside her crystal cocoon, reducing her to a pulp. Made worse by the fact that he smashed the cocoon with Galliard's Titan's jaws.
    • Four members of the Panzer Squad get burned alive by the Thunder Spears.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While fighting the Jaw Titan, the Attack Titan protects its face from the Jaw's claws with Lara Tybur's crystal. Seeing that the Jaw Titan is actually able to leave deep scratches on the crystal gives Eren the idea to use the Jaw's power against it to break the crystal and consume the War Hammer Titan.
  • Eye Scream: After being hit by a barrage of Thunder Spears, the Cart Titan is left a mangled mess with one of its eyes popped out.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Armin makes use of his newly obtained Colossal Titan power, becoming a bomb as he transforms and takes out the entire port with everyone in it.
  • Fatal Family Photo: The members of the Panzer Squad are shown having photos of their families in their gun turrets and Carlo, the member shot by Sasha, seems to have a group photo of Pieck and the rest of the members of the Panzer Squad.
  • Fragile Speedster: While fighting the Jaw Titan, Mikasa notes that Galliard's version eclipses Ymir's in speed and its sharp claws make it a dangerous enemy. However, after it losses its momentum, the Attack Titan is easily able to cripple it and would have killed Galliard without Reiner's intervention.
  • Go Through Me: Falco steps in front of Pieck's disabled Cart Titan to dissuade Jean from finishing her off.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Up until now, Eren has used his Titan Form to match up against other titans, but not once has he attempted to eat anyone. This episode marks the first time he has eaten another human being. Justified as he now knows he can gain another Warrior Titan's power by eating the person wielding it. He accomplishes this by eating Lara for her Warhammer power, and almost does the same with Porco for his Jaw power.
  • Hourglass Plot: Along with the previous episode, Eren and the Survey Corps' attack on the town is reminiscent of the Titans' attack in his home at the start of the series. The only difference is that the Marleyan military is more or less prepared for Eren, though the same can't be said when going against the Corps. However, there are just as many casualties, and Gabi is riddled with hatred, vowing to kill the "devils", much like Eren vowing to kill the Titans.
  • Ironic Echo: When the series began, Eren watched in horror as a titan ate his mother. In this episode, Porco, in his titan form, watches in horror as Eren uses him to kill his War Hammer Titan ally.
  • Irony: In the previous episode, Lara asked Eren if he had any last words before she smashing him with her hammer. Turns out these were indeed Lara's last words.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Eren smashing Lara Tybur's crystal cocoon also smashes her in the process, turning her into a bloody pulp that Eren's Titan readily consumes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Though proceeding with the attack, Armin is no less shocked or guilty of the innocent lives he has taken while destroying the port.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • The Panzer Squad is able to free Porco and Pieck earlier than Eren and the Survey Corps initially intended; if it wasn't for them, there's a huge chance Eren wouldn't have been able to devour Lady Tybur and acquire her Titan power, as he wouldn't have find out that Porco's Titan's jaw is made of a material that can break Lady Tybur's crystal cocoon.
    • After seeing Armin's Colossal Titan blow up the harbor in the distance, Galliard breaks formation and tries to kill Eren in a rage. This leads to the Beast Titan's seeming death and the Cart Titan being overwhelmed by Thunder Spears and Pieck almost getting killed.
  • Talking to the Dead: After Armin sees the destruction he caused by transforming into the Colossal Titan, he asks Bertolt if this is the same kind of sight he saw whenever he transformed.
  • Wham Shot: Armin debuts in this episode, shown revealing himself in the port before shifting into the Colossal Titan, nuking it in the process.
  • You Are Not Alone: After seeing that Reiner's Death Seeker tendencies have left him unable to heal anymore, Falco promises to find him some help and tells Reiner that there are people who are still on his side.
