Darren finally decides to tell Ginger the truth and breaks up with her. She returns home where her friends try to comfort her, until she eventually cries herself to sleep. When her Mom comes to check on her she discovers Ginger unconscious with a fever.

When Ginger was in the hospital, Carl is desperate enough to pray (he's an atheist) for her and sounds near tears when he asked Dr. Dave if he saved Ginger's life. Despite the ups and downs, Carl truly does love his big sister and is terrified of losing her.
- Contrived Coincidence: While Darren is agonizing over what happened, Simone is trying to convince him that Ginger's appendix bursting right after Darren broke her heart was all just a "really ugly unfortunate coincidence".
- Innocently Insensitive: Hoodsey tries to comfort Ginger after her appendectomy by reading to her at her bedside—from a romance novel. Hoodsey has no idea that Ginger had been dumped by Darren immediately before being admitted to the hospital.
