Recap / Archer S 9 E 1 Strange Pilot

Go To

Archer's dream shifts from a noir mystery to an island adventure, as he becomes a pilot involved with a princess and a freshly dumped heiress.

  • The Alleged Plane: Princess Lana and Fuchs treat Archer's "Lucy" this way. However, despite its "hinky" fuel pump the Grumman Goose was for the era Danger Island is set in (1938) an extremely modern type, introduced just a year earlier as a "commuter" aircraft for well-to-do businessmen.
  • Brick Joke: In the previous season, Archer constantly complained that he hadn't gotten any sleep since Dreamland started. The opening of this season has him sleeping, which may fool viewers a bit that they're still in Dreamland.
  • Call-Back: Fittingly for a season where Archer seems to channel Rip Riley, the episode starts just like Heart of Archness Part 1: A newlywed with a seemingly neglectful husband wakes up in horror to find that she slept with Archer, who is, naturally, apathetic towards her.
  • Cliffhanger Copout: The episode ends as Archer prepares for a crash landing...and cuts back to show he's just fine.
  • Domestic Abuse: We don't get the details, but the break-up fight between Whitney and Charlotte involves a lot of things breaking and, judging by the screaming, was disturbingly one-sided on Whitney's part.
  • Jerkass Ball: While Whitney had a legitimate reason to be angry that Charlotte cheated on him during their honeymoon, it was pretty cold of him to depart the island, apparently taking her passport and clothes and leaving her no money.
  • Lighter and Softer: Compared to how Darker and Edgier Dreamland was, the first episode (and the rest) of Danger Island is more in line to the usual cynical comedy of the whole series.
  • "Shut Up!" Gunshot: Used by Archer to silence everyone in his room.
  • Squick: When Archer wakes up at the beginning of the episode, we're treated to several shots featuring his empty eye socket. Also counts In-Universe, as the sight makes Pam start screaming (which made Charlotte start screaming, which made Crackers start screaming, which lead to the previously mentioned "Shut Up!" Gunshot).
  • Talking Animal: Krieger is a talking parrot in this rendition named Crackers. Naturally a few of the characters are a bit freaked out that he can speak in coherent sentences.
Krieger, as Crackers: "Yes! I talk! Get over it!"
