The picture Anne wishes she could've taken.

Everyone calls Anne crazy when she claims to have seen the mythical Moss Man.

This episode has examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Played-with. On one hand, no one will ever believe that the Moss Man is real and that Wally and Anne saw it. On the other hand, the two are glad that they at least know that it is real and are happy to have formed a genuine friendship during their adventure.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism:
Anne: Wait, you're telling me you guys have giant fire-breathing beavers and mutant centipedes, but you don't believe in this?
Sprig: Well, yeah. We've seen those.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
Sprig: Actually, Anne, I believe you...
    Anne: Thank you! Jeez!
Sprig: ... dreamt it. I believe you dreamt it.
  • Cassandra Truth: Anne claims to have seen a cryptid called Moss Man, but nobody believes her. Averted with Wally's claims prior to the time he and Anne see the Moss Man because those are revealed (by Wally's own confession) as lies.
  • Call-Back: In the town square at night, Wally felt deja vu from Anne scaring him. He was the first resident of Wartwood to see her. Anne also mentions that the town just stopped calling her a monster.
  • Complexity Addiction: If Anne hadn't hesitated due to the amount of time Wally was in distress, she would've taken a picture of the Moss Man, then go to save him. Also, she could've taken the Moss Man's picture before Wally came up, and even before she got on the ledge.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Wally gets some focus in this episode.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This episode gives Wally's full name as Wallace whereas a season 2 episode reveals his name to actually be Walliam.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Anne has a chance to take a picture of the Moss Man at the top of the cliff, but gives it up to save Wally from falling off.
  • Gentle Giant: The Moss Man is surprisingly docile and shy compared to the other beasts of Amphibia. Wally still describes it to the town folk in the end as if it was a ferocious beast.
  • Jerkass Ball: Compared to previous episodes, The Plantars are noticeably more jerkish and out of character in this episode as they openly mock and bully Anne during the first part of the episode, and continue to get on her nerves after she gets frustrated with their teasing and show no remorse for their bullying.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: When Hop-Pop mockingly tells Anne she should learn to play the accordion and sleep under bridges, Wally proclaims that he wouldn't want to be that kind of person before slinking off.
  • Our Cryptids Are More Mysterious: The Moss Man is a cryptid in a world that has a lot of fantastic beasts. Its name is a pun on The Mothman, but its design looks more like a Planimal version of a Bigfoot.
  • Planimal: The Moss Man is some kind of bipedal beast made of moss.
  • Pretty Butterflies: The Moss Man is accompanied by glowing white butterflies.
  • Running on All Fours: The Moss Man walks on two legs, but when it wants to run fast, it descends on all fours.
  • Swallowed a Fly: Anne's slack-jawed awe at first seeing the Moss Man causes her to accidentally swallow one of the butterflies accompanying it. Her gagging alerts the Moss Man to her presence and it runs away before anyone else can see it.
  • Tempting Fate: When Wally and Anne start their journey, he also starts playing his accordion and Anne hopes he won't keep playing it. 8 hours later, he's still playing it.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: When Anne asks Wally to take her to the Moss Man's home, he says yes right away, but she keeps begging.
