Tropes

  • Artistic License – Education: Played for Laughs. Coach Keegan gets demoted to baseball coach after sexually assaulting his wrestling students instead of being fired or arrested for it.
  • Artistic License – Sports:
    • Falls in Greco-Roman Wrestling are a count of one, while the episode itself uses a three count like Pro Wrestling.
    • Matches are also scored, so a pinfall is not the only way to win.
    • Matches are time and period limited. If it goes beyond that, there are extra periods.
    • The referee regulates the in ring action, but there are two other outside officials who help score the match and the infractions. If regulation ends in a draw, only a single point is needed to win, not a fall.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Roger locks Barry in a freezer to prevent him from continuing his winning streak. Barry not only escapes but somehow set himself on fire, to Roger's confusion.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Stan loses his record thanks to a conspiracy between his best friend and his wife, but he is able to accept it. He also sets a new record for "Longest Man on Man Hug."
  • Black Comedy Rape: Apparently, Coach Keegan sexually assaulted his athletes while the wrestling program was in session. And continues to do so as the baseball coach.
Female student: Just going back a sec. Are you saying Coach Keegan, who is now the baseball coach, fucked his wrestlers?
Keegan: (with two distressed students by his side) That was a long time ago.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Barry has this gem when he has one of his opponents pinned down (possibly a slip of 'Evil Barry'):
Barry: Who wants him to die?
  • Creepy Gym Coach: According to Principal Lewis, Coach Keegan had sexually assaulted his athletes while the wrestling program was in session. Even as the baseball coach, the students are still uncomfortable being around him.
  • Epic Fail: Steve and his friends (sans Barry) were so bad at wrestling that they lost to an amputee and an emaciated cancer patient who needs to be wheeled in and out of the gym on a gurney.
  • Got Volunteered: When absolutely no-one expresses interest in the wrestling club, Stan names Steve and his friends as its newest members against their will.
  • Hypocrite:
    • Francine goes out of her way to sabotage Stan's wrestling record simply because she is tired of hearing about it. Other episodes have Francine herself boasting about her own talents and accomplishments, much to the family's chagrin.
    • Additionally, Francine gets mad at Roger for spilling the beans, ignoring the fact that she lied to Roger that she would record his favorite show for him to bribe him into helping her.
  • Jerkass Ball: Francine conspires to have Roger beat Stan's high school wrestling record simply because she is tired of hearing about it. Never mind that the record is one of the few great things from Stan's awful adolescence; she doesn't even try to talk to Stan about her feelings. Her claim that she wants Stan to move on rings especially hollow. She also fails to record Roger's favorite show despite promising, then gets mad at him for spilling the beans, despite him doing her a huge favor.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Coach Keegan doesn't get fired (or even arrested) for sexually assaulting his wrestling students and instead gets demoted to baseball coach.
    • Francine also doesn't face reprecussions for sabotaging Stan's childhood record just so she won't have to hear about it anymore.
  • Kevlard: As it turns out, Barry is the only member of the wrestling team who's actually any good, as his big fat body makes it tough for him to be manhandled, and he can easily pin down other fighters with his weight.
  • No Periods, Period: Defied. The young girl who earlier pointed out that Coach Keegan is a predator gets her first period during a wrestling meet later in the episode. Principal Lewis actually wins money thanks to that, because you always bet on Red.
  • No Sympathy: Francine doesn't feel any remorse for having Stan's accomplishment taken away from him just so she won't have to hear about it anymore.
  • Overly Long Gag: Stan and Roger's wrestling match, which lasted around ten days.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Played for Laughs. To fill in for Stan while he is wrestling against Roger, Klaus impersonates him at the CIA headquarters with only a tie wrapped around his bowl. And yet, everyone completely buys into it.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Unfair Sex: Francine admits that she had Roger take away Stan's wrestling record just so she won't have to hear about it anymore. Stan realizes that he needs to move on, while Francine is never called out for trying to sabotage her husband's happiness instead of simply talking to him about her feelings.
