Recap / American Dad! S5E12 "Roy Rogers McFreely"

Go To

Roger usurps Stan's position as the chairman of the homeowner's association.

Tropes:

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: In-Universe. Roger tries to dramatically reveal that he was Roy Rogers McFreely the whole time. Stan just rolls his eyes.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Stan attempts to assert his dominance over Roger by eating an entire bottle of horseradish. Anyone who's eaten horseradish will tell you that even a small amount (let alone the entire bottle) has an extreme kick, and Stan's sphincter is blown out.
  • Drama Queen: Roger destroys Greg and Terry's rose garden in retaliation.
Greg: I have nothing left to live for.
    Terry: We have a child.
Greg: Can't I be dramatic for two minutes?
  • Gilligan Cut: After Stan's group injures one of Roger's Mexican workers, he declares "they send one of us to the hospital, we send one of theirs to the morgue!" It then cuts to Stan's group finding "Old Guy" in the morgue, but Hayley says he died of natural causes.
  • Noodle Incident: Sergei submits a motion for all transit maps to be translated into Russian, but not treasure maps. He doesn't need to go on another treasure hunt.
  • Serious Business: "Old Guy" suggests skipping the primer when they repaint the next house, but Stan takes restoring the paint job very seriously.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Francine's response to seeing Roger's van heading right for the house is to just scream and close the curtains.
  • Tyrannical Homeowners' Association: The episode starts with Stan refusing to buy Grenadine for Roger or taking his requests in the family seriously. This leads to Roger donning the persona of Roy Rogers McFreely and charming the HOA boardmembers to start making Stan's life miserable. He installs a motion-sensor light directly outside of Stan's bedroom window, paints his curb into a no-parking zone, and plants non-native ornamental grass just to shock him. Stan and the other neighbors start to fight back by doing "Constructive Vandalism" to undo all of the changes, and the fight escalates from there.
  • The Voice: "Speakerphone," as Stan calls him, is an agoraphobic neighbor who helps Greg and Terry on the Neighborhood Watch. He appears in person when Roger has him forcibly taken outside.
