Recap / American Dad! S4E7 "Surro-Gate"

Go To

Airdate: December 2, 2007

Francine decides to be a surrogate mother for her gay neighbors Terry and Greg, but Stan kidnaps the baby in order to give it a better life, away from gay people (even though Virginia is one of a lot of states that doesn't allow gay people to have parental rights). Meanwhile, after Klaus swears horrible revenge on Steve and Roger for pushing him down a water slide, the two become reclusive and hide in the attic.

This episode includes examples of:

  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: In a visual example, Francine imagines Stan's response to telling him that she's pregnant. First he gets ready to attack her with a shattered beer bottle. Then he gets a chainsaw, then a leopard, and finally a leopard armed with a chainsaw.
  • Campy Combat: Outraged that Francine agreed to be the surrogate for Greg and Terry's baby behind his back, Stan threatens to beat them up. Greg and Terry's response is to put on some "rumble" music from West Side Story and engage in a dance-based battle, nimbly avoiding Stan's attacks, and pulling off over-the-top pretend attacks rather than actually attacking him, to his annoyance. After Stan leaves and is confronted by Francine, a group of men dressed in West Side Story costumes show up and ask if they missed the rumble, to which Stan says they did to their disappointment.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lily tells Stan about her spouse, Al, without mentioning that the name is short for "Alison." After revealing that they're lesbians, Stan can only wonder if Al, thinking it's another man, knows about this.
  • Corny Nebraska: When Stan crashes his car in the cornfields near Nebraska, he is rescued by a lesbian couple who live in a farmhouse with their two children. Said children have thick Nebraskan accents as well.
  • Delayed Reaction: It takes Stan far too long to realize that Al is actually a woman and that she and Lily are lesbians.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Stan does not realize that Francine is pregnant for six months, instead thinking she is intentionally gaining weight to prove a point about Stan loving her for who she is. Also, no one seems to notice that Steve and Roger have disappeared. The school calls Stan, but he dismisses the idea that he would notice his son is missing.
  • Foot Popping: Lily does this when she kisses Al.
  • Funny Background Event: Greg and Terry are still dancing to the music from West Side Story in their home while Stan and Francine argue.
  • Hollywood Law: At the time this episode aired, gay couples in Virginia did not have parental rights. Legal surrogacy contracts were not approved until 2019.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Greg and Terry reclaim their baby, and Stan learns his lesson, he tries to make it up with them, but unsurprisingly, he gets punched in the face and a restraining order against him.
  • Maternity Crisis: Francine's water breaks while the men are building things in the nursery.
  • Mundane Solution: By the time Steve and Roger emerge from the attic, Klaus had forgotten about the prank, but is then reminded and once again promises revenge. Roger then puts a stack of books on top of Klaus's bowl, trapping him, and wonders why they didn't just do that nine months earlier.
  • My Fist Forgives You: After returning the children, Stan apologizes for his actions. Terry punches him in the face.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Stan realizes this when Jason and Mary fight in the car, and he instinctively calls them "Steve and Hayley."
Stan: Wait, you fight just like my kids. Just like...normal kids.
Jason: We are normal kids, you moron!
  • Panicky Expectant Father: Greg. All throughout Francine's pregnancy, he is extremely nervous about becoming a father, especially when Francine goes into labor.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Steve and Roger preempt any further revenge from Klaus by placing a stack of books on top of his bowl so that he can't get out. But the fact remains that they lost nine months hiding in the attic in complete fear and paranoia, so in the end, Klaus did get a measure of vengeance.
  • Screaming Birth: Francine giving birth to Liberty Belle.
  • Shout-Out: After Terry describes how surrogate pregnancy works, Stan thinks it's like something out of Star Trek, before asking if it's from Deep Space Nine as he refuses to watch that for multiple unspecified reasons. DS9 actually did have a surrogacy plot line in Season 5.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Stan realizes what's happening when he answers a call from Francine's doctor about her pregnancy, and then relays this info to her.
"Your doctor called. He said the baby you are carrying for two gay men is perfectly fine and YOU SHOULD BE VERY EXCITED!!!"
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Francine imagines revealing to Stan that she is pregnant with Greg and Terry's child. He responds by smashing a bottle, only to then come back with a chainsaw, then coming back with a leopard, finally satisfied with a leopard holding the chainsaw.
  • Understatement: After Klaus promises excruciating revenge on Steve and Roger, the two are stunned silent and Steve can only reply "He didn't think it was funny."
  • Verbal Backspace: When Francine and Hayley watch the news report about Stan kidnapping the baby.
Francine: I can't believe your father would do something like this!
    Hayley: I can.
Francine: Yeah, I guess I can too. I don't know why I said that.
