Tropes

  • Accidental Truth: When Hayley is in a coma, Klaus suspects there's more to her doctor than appears, given her unprofessional behavior. Turns out the doctor actually is Hayley. However, he believed that she was a nurse trying to masquerade as a doctor.
  • Body Horror:
    • Hayley's disfigured face from Stan's incompetence.
    • While not as graphic as Hayley, Steve does undergo a lot of horrific injuries in order to push himself, like tapping his foam nose until he gets a nosebleed.
  • Clown School: Steve attends one, only to discover Roger is the teacher.
  • Epic Fail: Stan has two of these moments. First is his attempt to "fix" the city mural. Second is his attempt to "fix" Hayley's face.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Played for Laughs. Steve starts talking with a fellow classmate about how their instructor is the toughest one in all of clowning. Before he even finishes his sentence, he is able to figure out just from the description it's Roger in another disguise.
Steve: The teacher here is supposed to be the most intense and demanding instructor in all of clowning, and — shit, it's Roger, isn't it? It's going to be Roger.
  • Eye Scream: Hayley's eyeball pops out during her "operation".
  • Faking the Dead: Hayley is apparently in a car accident after discovering what Stan did to her face. However, when she is later found out by Klaus, she explains that she had the CIA physician fix her face and she's having Jeff play her being in a coma.
  • Hypocrite: In the beginning of the episode, Stan gives Hayley a lecture on how family should come first. However, when Hayley gets wrongfully blamed for his messing of the town mural, he is quick to abandon her in her time of need.
  • Magic Plastic Surgery: After the horrific results of Stan attempting to give her "plastic surgery," Hayley blackmails the CIA physician into actually fixing her face. At the end of the episode, Stan casually asks her if she's going to get her old face back.
  • Monster Clown: Roger's persona is a verbally and psychologically abusive teacher who pushes Steve to the point of self-injury. After Steve gets him fired, he becomes a gutter clown much like Pennywise in IT.
  • Negative Continuity: Despite the Smiths becoming Italian in the previous episode after trying that tomato sauce, they're back to their American mannerisms in this one without any explanation.
  • Overly Long Gag: The hearing about Roger's behavior is sidetracked by all of the attorneys doing clown antics. Even the chairman lampshades this that they're going to be here all day if they keep doing bits.
  • Spoiler Cover: The episode preview on Hulu shows the gruesome aftermath of Stan's botched "plastic surgery."
  • Stylistic Suck: Stan's new mural is as crummy as it sounds.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Steve and Roger's subplot is essentially Whiplash at a clowning school. Roger dresses as J. K. Simmons's character and even has a similar sounding name (H.J. Rimmens).
