Recap / American Dad S 15 E 8 Death By Dinner Party

Go To

Francine hosts a dinner party while a serial killer is attacking such events. When the guests begin getting picked off one by one, Roger takes it upon himself to solve the case.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: With Roger deciding he needs to double-down on his pranks, Stan says he knew this whole thing was pointless.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The lesson Roger takes away from the prank is to be even more terrifying in his own pranks.
  • High-Class Glass: The Colonel has a monocle, which is actually just glass as it goes along with his outfit.
  • His Name Is...: Greg is stabbed and claims to have felt the face of the killer, only to spend a minute preparing everyone for the dramatic reveal before dying.
  • Quintessential British Gentleman: Colonel Withersby, an old family friend who wears a monocle and a safari outfit.
  • Real After All: After learning that all of the murders were an elaborate prank, Roger thinks the "Dinner Party Killer" news story was part of it. Greg then explains that the killer and his murders are real, which is why they used him for the prank. At the end of the episode, we see the actual Dinner Party Killer getting into a taxi and asking to be taken to the Smith house.
  • Red Herring:
    • Double Subverted with the Colonel. He is introduced as an obvious suspect for the dinner party murders, but it's later revealed the whole thing is an elaborate prank.
    • A couple of clues point to Greg being the killer, specifically a missing lens from his glasses and lipstick. However, he's apparently killed seconds later.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Parodied; This episode has the appearance of a new character called Colonel Whitersby, who everyone, including the Smiths' friends, treat as a longtime friend who's always been around, despite this being the first episode he's appeared in.
  • Take Our Word for It: The relationship between the Smiths and the Colonel is one that has apparently gone back several years with his attendance at multiple occasions, yet this is the only time we see him.
  • Uncertain Doom:
    • Roger stabs the Colonel several times before learning that the entire thing was a prank. While the Colonel is barely alive and Roger says they should get him to a hospital, we don't actually find out if he survives.
    • Similarly, it's not explained what happened when the "Dinner Party Killer" made it to the Smith house.
