Go To

Steve and Roger uncover a secret society dedicated to harvesting unhatched bird eggs. Meanwhile, the rest of the family become Italian after having zesty tomato sauce.

Tropes:

  • Bystander Syndrome: In the opening, Steve narrates observing a catastrophe in progress, but Roger reminds him that they're here to look at birds.
Steve: Wow! A common brown-breasted brownbird.
Roger: You think that's cool? Check your six. Two common brown-breasted brownbirds.
Roger: (impatiently taps his notebook) Birds, Steve.
    Steve: A pigeon!
(A massive explosion occurs off-camera while Steve and Roger remain oblivious)
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Steve succumbs to the egg madness, Roger tries to talk him out of going for the century eagle's egg, only to see how close Steve is to the egg and proceeds to help him.
  • An Immigrant's Tale: When Steve is about to be killed by the Order, he has flashbacks to the Smiths coming to America as Italian immigrants and ultimately seeing Snot get blown up by a car bomb.
  • Italian-American Caricature: Francine decides to buy jarred pasta sauce for her spaghetti. The sauce is so good, that the family gradually develops Italian-American mannerisms like Francine sticking to the kitchen and making a big pot of sauce, Stan and Klaus listening to old Italian records with the living room redecorated with Roman Catholic icons, and Hayley and Jeff turning into a bickering couple. Steve in particular has a flashback to life as an Italian-American immigrant youth who ultimately saw his best friend Snot get blown up in a car bombing.
Steve: What the hell was in that sauce?
  • Negative Continuity: Despite them becoming Italian in this episode after trying the tomato sauce, the Smiths are back to their American mannerisms by the next episode without any explanation.
  • Pet the Dog: Steve and Roger end up dropping the century eagle's egg, but the bird rescues it and allows the two to get a beautiful view of it in flight.
  • Rambunctious Italian: The Smiths becomes stereotypical Italians after eating the sauce, talking with their hands and getting angrier.
  • Riddle for the Ages: It's never explained what was in the sauce that was making the Smiths act like they were Italian immigrants.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Hayley does this with Jeff after trying the tomato sauce.
