Bad Relationships and Playing The Black Widow
When Finn gets caught in a giant spider web, he ends up playing marriage counselor to a bickering arachnid couple.

Tropes

  • Babies Make Everything Better: When Barb's egg sac hatches, she and Ed decide they can make it work for the sake of their family. Justified, as it is implied a large part of Barb's attitude problem was pregnancy hormones and Ed implied earlier that he was upset because he wanted kids.
  • Because Destiny Says So: The bugs trapped due to the Circle of Life, they're meant to be eaten by spiders.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: The spider couple have this. Turns out its stress from pregnancy in Barb's case.
  • Call-Back: Finn's fingernails had to be cut because they were grossly overgrown. In the previous episode, Finn's to do list has "cut fingernails" on it.
  • Explosive Breeder: Barb makes a rain of babies.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Subverted; one of a pair of flies stuck in Ed and Barb's web says they should face their deaths, but the two immediately panic.
  • Flaming Sword: Ed finds one for Barb, though she doesn't like it.
  • Foreshadowing: When Ed is off looking for a gift to appease Barb, he mutters about how his life has gone south, muttering about how "all his friends have kids now and he doesn't". The episode and his conflict with barbs ends when she gives birth.
  • Giant Spiders: Played with, the spiders first appear to be small, but when they're next to Finn and Jake, they're actually large.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Barb planned to eat Ed, which is a common practice for certain spiders.
  • Monster Is a Mommy: Barb turns out to be pregnant the whole time and gives birth at the end of the episode.
  • One-Liner, Name... One-Liner: As Barb and Ed's spider babies crawl all over him and Finn, Jake quips "Circle of life, Finn. Circle of life."
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Barb has enough, her eyes turn red.
  • Spoof Aesop: Jake sums up what he's learned from the episode as he and Finn are literally buried in baby spiders.
Jake: Love like theirs will always find a way. It'll crawl right up on you and drain your body fluids, poisoning you slowly until you pass out!
  • Too Dumb to Live: Jake sticks himself to a giant spider's web thinking it was a trampoline, and then Finn sticks himself through jumping on it without any plans of what to do next. Also one of the flies gets set free from the web and flies around celebrating, only to instantly fly into the web and trap itself again.
