Basic Trope: A surprisingly realistic moment in Fictionland.
- Straight: Bob is smacked on the head with a comically large hammer. The show normalizes Amusing Injuries, but this time he suffers a severe concussion, and has to be hospitalized.
- Exaggerated: Bob is blown up. By the time the smoke clears, there are bits of him everywhere.
- Downplayed: Bob is hit on the head with a hammer. He gets a Cranial Eruption, but it's not overly large to the point that it's blatantly noticeable.
- Justified:
- Bob is a Cosmic Plaything, and the gods love to suddenly make things realistic at inopportune times for him.
- Bob is from the Real World, so when his very real body is subjected to toon violence that natives to the cartoon world can shrug off, it reacts as how a real person's biology reacts instead of toon biology.
- Inverted: Bob is shot in the lungs, but completely shrugs it off.
- Implied: After Bob is hit with the hammer, we get a Time Skip to three weeks later and Bob is still wearing bandages around his head and having noticeable cognitive difficulties. Alice then says something along the lines of "we wish we were living in a cartoon, Bob".
- Subverted: Bob gets blown up and dies. However, he inexplicably returns a few moments later.
- Double Subverted: That's not Bob, that's his twin brother Bill.
- Parodied: Bob is "Blessed" by having everything that happens to him being as realistic as possible.
- Zig-Zagged: Bob gets a concussion after getting hit on the head with a hammer, while Alice falls off a cliff and comes back no worse for wear.
- Averted: Bob is hit on the head with a hammer. He is hurt, but it's nothing serious.
- Enforced:
- The writers want to surprise the readers with a moment of realism.
- The writers were going for freaky and found that reality gave the freakiest results.
- It's a PSA employing Bait-and-Switch.
- Lampshaded: "Bob, you might want to see a doctor..."
- Invoked: Bob hits himself as hard as possible with the hammer.
- Exploited: Charlie murders Bob by hitting him on the head with the hammer, with the excuse that he didn’t know it’d affect Bob like that.
- Defied: Bob dodges the hammer.
- Discussed: “Oh, come on! Why am I the only one who can get realistically injured?!”
- Conversed: “That wasn't like most other movies, remember?”
