Basic Trope: Gameplay Grading that goes beyond gold medals or A ranks.

  • Straight: Tropin' Rhythm is a Rhythm Game that grades you according to how many points you got on a song. The highest rank is S+.
  • Exaggerated: The lowest passing grade is a plain A. The other grades are A+, A*, A**, A***, S-, S, S+, S*, S**, S***, SS-, SS, SS+, SS*, SS**, SS***, SSS-, SSS, SSS+, SSS*, SSS** and SSS***.
  • Downplayed:
    • The highest rank is A+, which is given for perfect scores.
    • The highest rank is S — a special rank only used to reward players who have achieved a perfect run on the hardest song on Extreme difficulty.
  • Justified: In-universe, the powers that be have found out that the A rank has been achieved by so many players that it's been devalued. They figure out that introducing a new S rank is better than tightening the requirements to get an A (which would introduce an awkward question: "What do we do with old A ranks that don't meet the new requirements? Do we grandfather them in and leave every player asking 'was it before or after the revaluation?' every time they see an A, or do we invalidate them and frustrate a lot of people?").
  • Inverted:
    • If you fail a song badly enough, you get an F--.
    • The highest achievable rank is B. The A rank exists, but requires impossible perfect scores and only exists to teach An Aesop about how nobody is perfect.
  • Subverted: Report Siht brags about getting an S. It turns out that he was lying.
  • Double Subverted: After a lot of practice, he gets a legitimate S.
  • Parodied:
    • The ranks are "E", "D", "C", "B", "A" and "Crap, We Ran Out of Alphabet".
    • The four highest ranks in ascending order are gold and platinum, followed by... rhodium and technetium for no reason other than "they're expensive metals".
    • An otherwise realistic military simulator has a rank above "General". It's "Super Duper General".
    • The ranks are B, then A, and the remaining ranks are just an increasingly large number of S's. The character in charge of ranking your performance turns out to be a snake when you get an SSSSSSSSSS on every song.
  • Zig Zagged:
  • Averted:
    • The highest rank is A.
    • The game uses numerical ratings with no fixed cap.
  • Enforced: See Justified, but replace the in-universe powers that be with real-life meddling executives who don't want to change the meaning of an A rank.
  • Lampshaded: "Our grades go all the way up to S+!"
  • Invoked: Report Siht suggests introducing a new rank above A.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
  • Discussed: "I wonder if there's a rank above A..."
  • Conversed: "I got an A on the song 'Tropers Do It Without Notability'!" "That's nothing. Come back when you get an S++."

Back to the main page. Report Siht gives it an S+.
