Basic Trope: A character acting unlike their usual self.

  • Straight: In a fanfic of The Adventures of Alice and Bob, Alice, who is usually a Friend to All Living Things and quite timid, is portrayed as a confrontational and abrasive impolite person whom yells at everyone and goes around literally kicking dogs.
  • Exaggerated: Everyone is acting the correct opposite of their characters.
  • Downplayed: Alice calls a mean person a "jerk" despite not approving of name-calling in the series, but is otherwise in-character.
  • Justified:
    • Alice was under mind-control.
    • The fanfiction is a Troll Fic.
    • Alice has just entered the explorative phase of puberty.
  • Inverted: Alice was suffering from invokedCharacter Derailment in the original show, and her personality is more consistent in the fanfiction.
  • Subverted: It turns out not to be Alice yelling and kicking dogs.
  • Double Subverted: It was Bob Disguised in Drag, and he's usually the most sensible of the group and would have no reason for running around in drag, yelling at people and kicking dogs.
  • Parodied: The fanfiction is a Troll Fic where Alice becomes utterly despicable so that Parody Sue Carol can date Bob.
  • Zigzagged: Alice yells at everyone, then apologizes and gets worried about hurting their feelings, then goes out and kicks the dog, then says "Sorry, little doggy", and pats him on the head, then calls Carol a jerk, then apologizes, etc.
  • Averted: Alice stays in-character.
  • Enforced: The fanfic writer wants to know what would happen if Alice suddenly acted mean.
  • Lampshaded:
    • "What's with Alice? She hasn't been herself as of lately."
    • The title of the fanfic is Alice Acts Weird.
  • Invoked: At the beginning of the fanfic, an Eldritch Abomination who is also The Trickster makes everyone act not like themselves.
  • Exploited: Alice acts out of character, but then Bob uses it to frame Alice for a crime.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: Bob and Carol try to find out why Alice is acting so weird.
  • Conversed: "Alice would never do that, has the writer even WATCHED The Adventures of Alice and Bob?"
  • Implied: Alice is only mentioned in passing by Bob, who mentions that she yelled at him or kicked his dog.
  • Played for Drama: Alice's Out of Character behaviour is a symptom of a disease that Bob and Carol must Find the Cure! for.
