Playing With / Artifact of Hope

Go To

Basic Trope: A powerful, benevolent artifact with only good, or at least holy, applications.

  • Straight: The Sword of Commandments is a gold-hilted, rust-free magic sword designed to slay unholy monsters, cut through Evil Concentrate and Only the Chosen May Wield it.
  • Exaggerated: Anyone who touches the Scepter of Serenity has all of the bad parts of their heart and soul power-washed out of them, rendering them an Embodiment of Virtue.
  • Downplayed: People who wear the Choker of Compassion are made calmer when they wear it, as well as make them far less dickish to those around them.
  • Justified:
    • The Hammer of Honor was forged by the God of Good specifically to be wielded by Actual Pacifists. The thing was created down to its very photons to be used for non-malicious reasons.
    • The Javelin of Jubilation was forged by angels in the heart of a newborn star, cleansed in holy-fire, soaked in holy-water, polished with unicorn tears and hand-delivered by Santa Claus to a person on the very tip-top of the nice list.
  • Inverted: Artifact of Doom.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted: The Jar of Justice is the most sacred artifact in the collection of a coven of White Mages. Why? Because the Jar is a prison for an Ancient Evil and they were tasked with keeping it from escaping.
  • Parodied: The Garter-Belt of a Thousand Virgins is a mystical chastity belt that ensures that love blossoms anew for everyone in the universe so long as it is worn.
  • Zig Zagged: The Principality Wand imbues great magical power in the hands of whoever wields it. What those powers are depends on the person that wields them. When The Hero wields it, it turns into a shiny-chrome sword that turns them into a Flying Brick. When the Evil Overlord gets his hands on it, the wand turns black, the skies glow an ominous red and he gets a sweet set of spike-covered armor to go with his Physical Godhood.
  • Averted: The Ring of Repose belonged to The Good King, but it's just a ring. No magic in it.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: When The Hero has to pick from a line-up of weapons, the only one made of platinum, is caught with a ray of sunlight from the window and uplifting church music playing as it does so catches his eye immediately.
  • Invoked: The Hierophant of a new religion has his big stick painted gold and claims that it was a gift from God, evoking the idea of a powerful, Lawful Good wizard to intimidate "sinners".
  • Exploited: King Coward wears the Panties of Purity under his Scary Impractical Armor because its purifying effects cancels out the fatal-effects of the Staff of Kilal, letting him cast all of the world-wrecking spells he wants without it killing him in the process.
  • Defied: The Singing Sword of Sanatra was forged to be wielded by The Hero to slay the God of Evil, but its blade is dull, the sword is sentient and it refuses to be used for anything other than singing showtunes.
  • Discussed: The Artifact Collection Agency categorizes all magical objects in their possession under a variety of categories. Those that fall under "HAs" or "Hope Artifacts", follow a specific list of criteria, usually scoring a 7 or higher in categories such as "Malignant to Benign", "Mundane Utility Level" and "Ease of Containment".
  • Conversed: The temple that contains The Right Hand of Doom has schematics drawn on its walls that will allow anyone who can decode the the means to forge The Left Hand of Hope, the one thing that negates the Right Hand's evil powers.
  • Implied: Good fortune and prosperity seems to follow The Coffee Cup of Caring wherever it goes.
  • Deconstructed:
    • The Mask of Magnificence is an extremely powerful object that can control the very destiny of the world. The Mask was made so that only Purity Personified can wear it and use its powers. Unfortunately, the Big Bad finds it and takes control of its power because he's Pure Evil.
    • The Gauntlet of Galantness has the greatest reserve of pure magic power on the planet and will only allow itself to be used for good. And since violence is considered a bad thing, it will refuse to be used to fight and defeat the Evil Overlord that has been conquering and enslaving the planet.
    • The Pearl of Piety is the most powerful artifact to exist and only those who are pure of heart can wield its power. However, what qualifies as "Pure of Heart" is pretty subjective and the Pearl's standards are so high that it has yet to find its master after an eternity of waiting. Even a genuinely noble person who intends on using its power for pure reasons will fail its Secret Test of Character because it would have been tempted to use its power selfishly for 1/8th of a second.
  • Reconstruction: The Amulet of Awe is a Situational Sword and is prone to failing whenever The Hero displays qualities one would consider "bad" or "evil" (selfishness, wrath, cowardice, etc.). It's later revealed that the Amulet is a Trickster Mentor that acts finicky because this is the only way it can subtly lead the Hero to victory in the end, as well as teach them a valuable lesson by the end of the episode. The Amulet makes him lose the battle because that is how they will win the war.
