  • Mixed with a dose of Fridge Horror as Katsumi tells Kaede about the nightmares that she had been having about Mayuri's countless deaths from the Alpha line. How many other people were experiencing similar things between the two world lines as a result of everyone having a degree of Reading Steiner? Okabe immediately comes to the same conclusion.
  • The anime adaptation has finally started, and there's an absolutely horrifying new scene not present in the original visual novel, where Okabe has an anxiety-induced hallucination of Kurisu, depicting her exploding into blood, having tons of her corpses lying on the ground, and the like, all the while a distorted Gate of Steiner plays in the background.
  • When Okabe began to grow attached to Amadeus Kurisu. In the anime, Maho tells Okabe to snap out of it and reminds him that Kurisu, the person has long been dead.
    • Then after that Okabe immediately dreams that he is in some kind of war zone that he is in custody with some shady soldiers. Okabe then realizes that it was just a PTSD episode of something he hasn't even experienced yet. He asks Amadeus what happened before he had hallucinations. Amadeus then tells him that they had a conversation after that. Okabe in horror says that he doesn't remember talking to Amadeus and the episode may be Reading Steiner activating. He likely went to another timeline when World War III is already starting.
  • In a flashback where Suzuha and Kagari were in 1999 to fix the Y2K problem, the latter suddenly goes blank when she sees an uncanny smiling mouth in the sun She then tries to stop Suzuha from "changing the future" by pointing a gun to Suzuha. Let that sink in... a child threatening someone with a gun because she saw a creepy figure in the sky.
  • Suzuha in the present time is helped by Okabe and friends to find Kagari (who is now an adult). Daru asks a contact person for help to find Kagari. The person then contacts Daru that they have a lead regarding Kagari and will be dropping by the lab. Okabe then opens the door when somebody knocked. When he opened the door, he realized that the contact person is Moeka, who was responsible for the death of Mayuri in the other timeline most of the time. Okabe is horrified at this, and none of his friends will understand his feeling.
    • Even worse when it's revealed the Rounders still exist in this timeline and Okabe confirms it to Tennouji-san's face, so the possibility was VERY real.
  • Continuing Steins;Gate's apparent tradition of involving Madness Mantra as Wham Shot, the revelation behind Kagari being brainwashed all along for an untold amount of time is this... And it is as freaky as it looks. As Okabe accompanied Moeka to investigate an undisclosed location which involves the place where Kagari was found (somewhere near the Chiba prefecture), both of them discovered an abandoned facility that has fallen into disrepair for quite some time. But that's not the scary part...
    • As both of them descended further into the facility, they found out that the facility had actually just been recently used as opposed to the state of the building. What did they find inside? A literal Room Full of Crazy, completely full of wall writings which say "Mama", "I Miss You", and many others. What makes it particularly horrifying is that ever since Kagari was found, her attitude seemed to be a bit strange, given her age (notwithstanding about her unknown details for surviving about 10 years on her own) and the revolving mystery behind her disappearance after she got separated with Suzuha in 2000. And now it's painfully clear as day: No matter the era she was in, she remained a subject of literal brainwashing designed for the groups pulling the strings behind the scene. And she missed Mayuri so much that it remained the subject of her mania for all this time! Would Hurt a Child at its finest!
    • This looks innocent enough, until you read the details above...
  • Episode 18: Leskinen's Evil Gloating as he explains with Dissonant Serenity the whole Stable Time Loop business, and reveals his full, legitimate, nightmarish Mad Scientist credentials. The anime shows alternatively his 2011 self, and his future self, as he goes on with his Motive Rant, to show just how crazed his mind is, and will be.
Okabe: Don't you fear... causing a time paradox? Don't you fear destroying the world?
Leskinen: If there is such a thing, I would very much like to see it!
  • Episode 19: As he sees again the helicopter destroy the time machine, Okabe has traumatic flashbacks, fearing in his very bones that this is a convergence event.
  • Episode 20: After a very creepy dream sequence with time stopped, Okabe ends up waking up in the Bad Future, in 2036, with an old and weak body, when his last memories were of using the Timeleap Machine in 2011. Try to picture this, and the magnitude of the Freak Out he had to have, wondering JUST what in hell went SO wrong.
    • Then he gets accosted by military personnel patrolling the no man's land that Akihabara has become, requesting his name and citizen number at gunpoint, without understanding ANYTHING.
    • And to top it off, Okabe is then told that they missed the two day time frame to time leap, so he had to live for 14 years with these regrets before ending up tortured and dead in mind, and finally being restored from a backup in 2036. He understandably gets an Heroic BSoD from the nightmarish implications.
  • Episode 21 : It was mentioned in the original VN that time leaping causes untold amount of stress and pain to the mind, enough to go insane. And Okabe has to time leap more than 3000 times to get back to 2011. Try imagining that. It is a testament to Okabe's Determinator nature, but this doesn't lessen in any way the literal HELL he goes through, both in physical pain and emotional pain since he has to re-explain everything to his friends 3000 times.
  • Mayuri and Suzuha engaging in Operation Arclight. They accepted to go on a one-way trip through time to give a Rousing Speech to 2010!Mayuri so she could avert Okabe's Heroic BSoD, ultimately using the last of their power and ending up stranded in an unknown time period with no hope of going back. Even though the fact it was a Heroic Sacrifice was fully calculated and understood, the very idea is still nothing short of horrifying. The anime further elaborates on how despaired Suzuha is over the whole situation. They do end up saved by 2025 Okabe, but still. Who knows just how long they had to spend in BC 18000 in that state?
