- Call-Back: "Dull Boy" opens by having Chad repeat the Madness Mantra from The Shining, which was also a lyric in "IMN",
- Cover Version: The deluxe edition bonus disc has the band covering The Police's "King of Pain". This originally appeared on their Greatest Hits album By the People, for the People.
- Concept Album: The album's concept is an interactive murder mystery tied to the artwork and a promotional website which set up the storyline of a small town where everyone is a suspect, and the eccentric characters that inhabit the town. The deluxe edition is packaged to look like a dossier.
- Product Placement: Subverted. "Have It Your Way" uses the Burger King slogan to criticize George W. Bush-era foreign policy and nationalism.
- Updated Re-release: The deluxe edition, in addition to the dossier-style packaging, has a disc of bonus tracks, consisting of the exclusive tracks from By the People, for the People without Chad's introductions.
