In the West, gay men rarely appear outside of works aimed at gay men (though this is changing with many series beginning to represent regular LGBTQA characters). However, one of the cultural quirks of Japan (though it is slowly bleeding over to the rest of the world) is the use of young gay men as Fanservice for girls or young women.

Works that focus on these relationships form a genre currently known by the English term as Boys' Love, also called Yaoi. Yaoi is a subgenre of Shoujo and Josei Manga.

But even outside of actual BL series, hints of male-male romance are often thrown in to help the series fanon appeal to other demographic groups, though its main target audience is still overwhelmingly female. If there is a YaoiFangirl among the cast, it is not unlikely for her to try and invoke this trope.

Depending on the series in question, this can be limited to some HomoeroticSubtext... or not. However, many BL pairings in certain Fanon circles are forced regardless of character interaction, even without gay subtext in the original work, due to the trope GuyOnGuyIsHot, which serves to feed the desires of its majority straight female fanbase (akin to straight men and Seinen Yuri). This usually results in crack pairing shippings, something Yaoi, SlashFic, and Shounen-ai are notorious for-- which many may consider CanonDefilement. Some popular targets of Yaoi stereotypes being placed onto Non-Yaoi series are Axel and Roxas from VideoGame/KingdomHeartsII, Zoro and Sanji from Manga/OnePiece, or the entire cast of Anime/Free.

Granted, a Yaoi male doesn't need to be a Bishonen, but there is a massive amount of overlap between the two character types. Yaoi Boys are also regularly portrayed by themes like TallDarkAndHandsome, CastFullOfPrettyBoys, DudeLooksLikeALady, and other highly appearance-based tropes.

Secondary to these themes, Yaoi Boys are always heavily subjected to the FemaleGaze, which is parallel to the MaleGaze. And on the physical side, Yaoi Boys usually have little to no facial or body hair, skinny to muscularly lean bodies (though not too buff unlike in Bara), a bishie sparkle, light-skin, and youth which is the typical depiction of men in Shoujo and Josei manga. Some more modern works deviate from this ideal with buffer and older men rather than the standard Bishonen type.

One should note that Yaoi Guys should not be viewed as representative of LGBTQA men that come in all shapes, ages, weight ranges, ethnicities, and whom often do not conform to the gendered stereotypes typically portrayed in Yaoi works. Yaoi's main target audience is catered to a heterosexual female demographic and their perspectives of the ideal male figure, which follow the above Yaoi stereotypes.

* Manga/Adekan: Anri had a close intimate relationship with Shiro when they were younger. Also, Shiro and Kojiro toe the line between subtext and text often.
* Luka and Yuki and the Zweilt guardians and their partners in Manga/BetrayalKnowsMyName.
* Anime/BlackButler: Ciel and Sebastian get shippy moments often but the two that have been confirmed as being this by the end of the anime are Claude and Alois.
* Rolo in Anime/CodeGeass has more than a little of this going on towards Lelouch. It may be slightly more than coincidental that the character design was done by...
* Creator/CLAMP. Pick a Creator/CLAMP series. Any series. More specifically:
** Touya and Yukito in Manga/CardcaptorSakura, arguably the TropeCodifier couple for this, due to how Pun straight and unsubtle was the romance between them played. The fact that they become the BetaCouple by the end of the manga is no surprise and even Creator/Nelvana and Creator/TheOceanGroup's attempt at making it subtler in the Cardcaptors dub was only capable of diminishing this to a still very much present and undeniable HomoeroticSubtext.
** Syaoran has a huge crush on Yukito in the first half of the manga, though this is later explained to just be an attraction to his Moon-based powers.
** Gingetsu and Ran in Manga/Clover.
** Subaru and Seishirou in Manga/TokyoBabylon, Manga/X 1999, and Tsubasa, one of CLAMP's most iconic (and tragic) couples.
** Fuuma and Kamui, also in X and Tsubasa. (Prone to touching each other suggestively during battle, and confirmed by WordOfGod to have been more than friends, although it should also be remembered that Kamui was initially in love with Fuuma's sister Kotori )
** Rikuou and Kazahaya, and Kakei and Saiga, in Legal Drug
** Doumeki and Watanuki in Manga/XXXHolic - heavily implied, certainly at least on Doumeki's part considering his remarkable displays of devotion.
** Kurogane and Fai in Manga/TsubasaReservoirChronicle, due to the previously mentioned Touya and Yukito being DemotedToExtra in this manga. It helps that the former share a large number of physical and personality traits with the latter.
** Takeshi and Kentarou from Manga/DuklyonClampSchoolDefenders. Kentarou often declares that his life's goal is to be a beautiful bride and he insists that he and Takeshi should go out on dates, get married, etc. Takeshi attempts to protest but never succeeds in getting Kentarou to desist.
* In Manga/DokiDokiSchoolHours, High School junior Kudou Yuuichi has had a crush on classmate Suetake Kenta since at least elementary school. He's an interesting example inasmuch as being a completely standard looking male student, unlike the show's (straight) part-time WholesomeCrossdresser.
* In one episode of Anime/ExcelSaga, the messenger sent by the heads of ACROSS is a handsome and somewhat androgynous rock star named Key. Excel becomes infatuated with him, and we are shown a fantasy sequence in which she imagines Key and Il Palazzo as Yaoi Guys.
* LightNovel/FullMetalPanic: In the novels Yu Fan and Yu Lan--Twincest twins who take very intimate showers together and kiss each other on the lips--are actually male instead of female.
* Manga/Genshiken has YaoiFangirl Chika Ogiue, who in both manga and anime fantasizes about her love interest as a yaoi guy with another member of the club. In fact, the anime episode . Don't forget the Soba Incident, either.
* Kazuki and Juubei from the Manga/GetBackers anime. (In the manga, any ambiguity in terms of romantic vs. platonic feelings is solely on Juubei's part.)
* Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers has Germany proposing to Italy during the Buon San Valentino 2009 strip, red roses and tomato ring included. What comes of it is still unclear, but it's not really subtext at this point.
** While Germany and Italy are "the" example of this trope, just about every male character gets this at some point.
* Kurapika and Leorio from Manga/HunterXHunter were often portrayed as this in the pre-2011 era, getting shippy moments in the 1999 anime's filler (such as Kurapika saying that "something cold just ran down [his] back" when Leorio gets out of the shower) and even its OP. This drama CD further ups the ante.
* Raphael and Mikael from Anime/ImGonnaBeAnAngel. They're an OfficialCouple and sleep together naked in the same bed while holding hands.
* Serge and Gilbert from Manga/KazeToKiNoUta, the main and least squicky couple. Rosemariné and Jules also have some implications that they're into each other, or at least were at some point.
* Shibuya Yuuri and Wolfram von Bielfeld from LightNovel/KyoKaraMaoh are engaged, sleep in the same bed, and are raising a daughter together. Second two resulting from Wolfram's fixation on the first. Played up for laughs, but taken very seriously by Wolfram, who has made passionate declarations of love to Yuuri.
* Manga/LycheeLightClub: Although not a shoujo manga, the main characters Zera and Jaibo are potrayed as an official couple.
%%* Main characters Ritsuka and Soubi of Manga/Loveless.
%%* Kagetora and Naoe of LightNovel/MirageOfBlaze.
* Though nearly every combination of the main five pilots of the Anime/MobileSuitGundam spin-off Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing has been shipped as standard fan procedure, a case for Trowa Barton and Quatre Raberba Winner can actually be argued from canon. Given the director's mentioned that Gundam Wing's "pretty boys" pilots were designed specifically to try to tap into the female fan demographic, this may be less surprising than it seems.
* Shirogane and Akira in the Manga/MonochromeFactor anime.
* Kaworu Nagisa and Shinji Ikari's brief but powerful friendship at the end of Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion is rife with common overtones of this sort. While not being specifically elaborated on, it has been milked in non-canonical (and humorous) material. Kaworu's (failed) attempts to get some attention from Shinji are actually canon in the spin-off series Manga/ShinjiIkariRaisingProject.
** The creators have made it pretty clear that Kaworu was written to be Shinji's main love interest, even if their relationship was not given much screentime: earlier drafts for episode 24 had Shinji -almost- confessing his feelings for Kaworu (while skinny dipping), and a second draft even had a kiss scene between the two of them.
*** And in the Shinji Ikari Raising Project game (which has dating-sim elements), Kaworu's route is the main one, while the girls' routes are actually bonus.
** This was only exasperated in the merch for the Anime/Of Evangelion era. Since a lot of it emphasizes POVBoyPosterGirl Rei, Asuka, and Mari over Shinji, he and Kaworu had to be packaged together after the third film to get anything sold (their first figures were connected, and their appearance on the official art book was on the back cover, away from everyone else).
* Anime/Nightwalkers FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire Shido and his obsessive vampire dad, Cain, who longs for the days when they used to threesome with unfortunate human victims. These days, all Shido has to say to him is "IHateYouVampireDad", but Cain has all of eternity to wear him down.
* Mei and Gabu in the Anime/OneStormyNight anime film, although Mei's gender is ambiguous in the original storybooks and Mei's a girl in the recent CG series.
* The YuriGenre manga Manga/OtomeNoTeikoku has a gay couple, Edward and Ian, who act as Elisha's host family.
* Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin offer twincestuous BL fanservice to the customers of the Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub. Honey and Mori's more downplayed guardian/master relationship has shades of this too. This is inadvertently pulled when finds out Haruhi's secret and leads the host club customers into believing he's trying to confess his love to the beautiful male Haruhi. After realizing she does not reciprocate he swears to be her friend forever--and suddenly becomes very popular with the ladies, who find his tragic spurned yaoi love to be cute.
* Manga/OutlawStar has Fred Luo and his crush on Gene.
* Manga/PeacemakerKurogane: After being raped in the manga, Suzu becomes gay, crazy, and obsesses over Tetsunosuke in this manner. And then there's this manga cover. Suzu's relationship with Tetsunosuke was always rather HomoeroticSubtext-ridden in the first place, although before it tended to be the more innocent sublimated kind... before it went into full on StalkerWithACrush. Bets are up in the air as to whether if Tetsunosuke had actually slept with Suzu after he was raped they would have been able to save a lot of pain.
** Hijikata and Okita too.
* Manga/PleaseSaveMyEarth includes a (heterosexual) couple who were both reincarnated as boys and who have to redefine their relationship once they find each other again.
* Manga/PrincessPrincess is a series set in an all boys school where the most feminine boys are forced to dress up as girls and accept the adoration of the rest of the school. Some don't mind, most adjust. Shihoudani's mother, at one point, assumes that Shihoudani and Tohru are an item.
* Manga/Reborn2004: The author was aware of her rabid female fanbase, and was very unsubtle about the HomoeroticSubtext between most of the male cast, though it seems that there was a particular pandering to Gokudera/Tsuna, Gokudera/Yamamoto, Tsuna/Hibari, Tsuna/Mukuro and Hibari/Dino.
* Anime/SaberMarionetteJ makes a running gag of the attraction the flamingly gay rich boy Hanigata has for the poor, industrious (and fundamentally straight) Otaru. Then again, they are on a planet whose human inhabitants are all men, clones in fact, while the women are, well, marionettes.
* The original Anime/SailorMoon anime had a villainous example in the form of Zoisite and Kunzite. Creator/DiCEntertainment's dub censored this by making Zoisite a woman.
* Mikogami Hayato and his Dragon, Mutsu in Manga/Sekirei. Also, .
* Manga/Simoun even manages a pair of them, who were originally lesbians. To elaborate, in the world of Simoun, everyone is born female. The people of Simoun choose their gender when they reach adulthood. The men above were orginally together when they were female and remained together after they both decided to become male.
* Head and Shingo from Anime/StarDriver are all but stated to have been dating in the past (before Shingo fell into a fifteen year long coma). Head's a DepravedBisexual who uses his ability to easily score with everyone to manipulate everyone into doing what he wants them to and thus probably not really romantically interested in him, but Shingo's crush seems very obvious and sincere. Aditionally, the latter has the Bishonen typical look of an uke character.
* Manga/VampireDoll: Dante and Hugo. Also, Aihara and Matsuzawa, two side characters who attend Tonae's high school.
* Manga/Vassalord: Charley and Rayflo. Barry is a Yaoi Guy, and he probably thinks he's this with Rayflo, although it's not reciprocated.
* Karasu and Itsuki in Manga/YuYuHakusho. (Not dating; if they were it'd be a massive Trainwreck.) Sensui is a StraightGay with feelings for Itsuki by WordOfGod.

* Nico di Angelo and Will Solace in Literature/TheTrialsOfApollo. Teenage demigod boys, sons of Hades and Apollo respectively. Nico is dark-haired, very broody, extremely powerful and a deadly warrior. Will is blonde, upbeat and a healer. Even Apollo himself thinks that they are cute together.

* Not as much fan service as AdaptationExpansion, but Series/GameOfThrones had Renly and Loras, .

* Roleplay/TheMadScientistWars has its fair share of pairings, but so far the most involved (read: CannotSpitItOut) relationship is between Andrew Tinker and David Toboz. As of this example, they're official, but Andrew still is smart enough to worry about ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies. Interestingly, Andrew's son may be heading towards such a relationship. Commander Xerox and Jess may or may not count. Jess is a shapeshifter who was born female, but when they first met she was shifted as a boy. Xerox, being bi, doesn't seem to care much either way.

* Franchise/FireEmblem:
** Raven and Lucius from Fire Emblem 7, with Heath and Legault as the second-most popular pairing. And it's not too much of a stretch to assume Matthew's got something for Guy.
** It's more famous for the implied twincest between Ephraim and Eirika, but Innes and Ephraim could practically define UST with their constant bickering in VideoGame/FireEmblemTheSacredStones. Forde and Kyle are a toned-down version. Gerik and Saleh have a surprising amount of evidence in their favor: Shared history that they haven't really gotten over, the SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan dynamic, and Gerik even takes Saleh out for dinner. In fact, pick any male character from Franchise/FireEmblem--odds are that they've got another guy they can support with for extremely subtext-heavy support conversations.
** Soren and Ike from VideoGame/FireEmblemPathOfRadiance/Radiant Dawn. Soren is a Defrosting Ice King who only shows his true feelings to Ike, pledges his UndyingLoyalty to him, and is one of Ike's paired endings. Probably the most (in)famous moment for the pair is a conversation that's very difficult to unlock where [[spoiler: right before the final battle, Ike has been cured of his LaserGuidedAmnesia and can recall their ForgottenFirstMeeting. It ends with Soren crying in Ike's arms and inspiring loads of HurtComfortFic.]]
** VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening only has heterosexual endings, but some of the guys have enough subtext between them to come across as these. Owain/Inigo is heavy in the Future Past maps, while Vaike is...quite obsessed with Chrom.
** A male Avatar in VideoGame/FireEmblemFates can be this with the outlaw Niles if they reach S support. Niles and Leo can also come off like this, with Niles's UndyingLoyalty to Leo and Leo showing a soft side towards him.
* Ildon and Rastaban in VideoGame/SaGaFrontier.
* Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu from the DS game VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou-he plays the yaoi guy for laughs in the Another Day bonus level.

* Dillon and Jerzy end up playing the role in Webcomic/StickyDillyBuns, if only for latent-YaoiFangirl-in-denial Ruby.

* The Franchise/Noob webseries and comic treat the viewer/reader to what goes though Gaea's mind when she goes into ShippingGoggles mode about Fantöm and Omega Zell. Her imaginary versions of the two fit perfectly.

* Kaworu Nagisa and Shinji Ikari's brief but powerful
PseudoRomanticFriendship: Young friends' friendship at the end of Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion is rife with common overtones of this sort.
Since
looks a lot like romance.
* WatchedItForTheRepresentation: Fans tune in to a work because
of it emphasizes POVBoyPosterGirl Rei, Asuka, and Mari over Shinji, he and Kaworu had to be packaged together after the third film to get anything sold (their first figures were connected, and their appearance on the official art book was on the back cover, away from everyone else).
representation it provides for minority group(s), such as LGBT individuals.
* Anime/Nightwalkers FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire Shido and his obsessive vampire dad, Cain, YaoiFangirl: A female Otaku who longs for the days when they used thinks GuyOnGuyIsHot.
* YaoiGenre: A Japanese genre focused on male/male relationships.

Please change any link
to threesome with unfortunate human victims.
* Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin offer twincestuous BL fanservice
point to the customers of the Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub.

* Franchise/FireEmblem:

In the West, gay men rarely appear outside of works aimed at gay men (though this is changing with many series beginning to represent regular LGBT characters). However, one of the cultural quirks of Japan (though it has bled over to the rest of the world) is the use of young gay men as Fanservice for girls or young women.
