** In book three, [[spoiler: the School for New Evil invokes EvilIsSexy instead of Ugly is Evil.]]

* VagueAge: A few lines in the third book imply that Tedros is just about to turn 16, ergo old enough to be crowned king, and it's implied that the girls are probably around 13-14 in the first book, and aging one year accordingly between each book.

* AnimatedTattoo: Hester has a tattoo of a demon on her neck that comes to life when summoned.

* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Agatha thinks this of herself, as does pretty much everybody else.

* RavenHairIvorySkin: What Agatha learns she really is. Tedros even describes her as such in the second book.

* BareYourMidriff: One of Sophie's costume changes invokes this. Dot's outfit in the sequel does the same.

In December of that same year, Creator/SofiaWylie and Sophia Anne Caruso were cast in the lead roles of Agatha and Sophie, respectively. * FaceHeelTurn[=/=]HeelFaceTurn: Pollux and Castor caution at the beginning of the first novel that this is not possible. Good cannot, they claim, become Evil, nor Evil Good. [[spoiler: They turn out to be mistaken in the end.]]

* BalefulPolymorph: [[spoiler: Students for Good who fail are turned into the wolf servants for Evil, while Evil students who fail are turned into pixie servants for Good. Students who underperform in general are turned into animals, and are only content until they realize they can be turned back.]]

** The Wolves get one later on. After Hester gracefully acknowledges that her talent is no match for Agatha's, she steels herself for the punishment that the Head Master doles out to the losers. In her case, it was boiling oil. Three wolves, moved by Agatha reminding them of who they'd once been (see BalefulPolymorph) shield her from this brutal fate.

* LoopholeAbuse: In ''A World Without Princes'', the school is divided into a Boy side and a Girl side. Agatha needs to cross to the Boy side, but the way is blocked by the magic barrier. She manages to use its own definitions of "Boy" and "Girl" against it by bringing up the MagicKiss she'd done with Sophie, something the barrier assumed could only happen between a boy and a girl.

* AmbitionIsEvil: [[spoiler:The Schoolmaster, Rafal, murdered his brother so he alone would control the destiny of fairy tales. In ''The Last Ever After'', this is taken even farther when sets his sights on ''wiping out Good permanently''. He does this while completely disregarding [[AndThenWhat what will happen to the cycle of stories without Good to appose Evil]].]]

* NobleDemon: Lady Lesso is the School of Evil’s dean and a wicked sorceress through and through, but not only does she acknowledge that Evil cannot truly exist without Good to appose it, (unlike [[spoiler:the Evil Schoolmaster]],) her best friend and confidante is Clarissa Dovey, the FairyGodmother. [[spoiler:After becoming the new Evil Dean in The Last Ever After's epilogue, Sophie appears to have adopted this way of thinking in honour of Lesso.]]

Every four years, two children from the small village of Galvadon are kidnapped by a shadowy figure known only as the "School Master". There isn't any pattern regarding gender or age (a 12-year-old is as likely to be taken as a teenager), but one child will always be beautiful and kind, the other ugly and foul-tempered. Furthermore, the likenesses of past children have appeared in the fairy tale stories mysteriously delivered to Galvadon's only bookstore. From these observations is birthed the Storybook Theory: the abducted children are sent to a school where they are taught how to be heroes or villains.

* WhatTheHellHero: Tedros gets one of these from Agatha after he beheads a gargoyle.
