Associated Tropes

  • Crapsack World: Feinan is not a pleasant place to live. Murderous cults dedicated to evil gods are scattered throughout the land, all going Join or Die on the populace, if said populace is lucky. Monsters abound in the wilderness, all of whom find humans especially tasty. Crime syndicates aren't just about Rape, Pillage, and Burn, some of them even have rites of passage demanding exterminations of entire villages of innocents, down to the last newborn. As for they authorities? Entirely self-serving, with very rare exception. As for the gods? Oh, they're looking to break down Feinan's protective barrier, letting unadulterated chaos swarm the land, purely to happily watch the people scurry like ants under a magnifying glass, and then enslave the survivors.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The protagonist, Marvin, has "Darkness" as one of his domains, is the titular "Night Ranger," and is a good individual who protects the weak, and champions the innocent.
  • Deity of Human Origin: The vast majority of the gods were once human and ascended via a divine ritual.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: In this series' universe, if a woman rapes a man, it's his fault, and he has to marry his rapist, as highlighted when Elf-king Ivan and Sea Queen Selene, have a dinner date, and she pins him to the ground, taking him against his will.
  • End of an Age: The entire premise of the story. Marvin transmigrates into Feinan just months away from "The Calamity." The time when the gods, sick and tired of staring at Feinan from the outside, launch an attack on it's boundary, the Universe Magic Pool, letting the plane be attacked from the rest of the multiverse, and causing massive casualties, both for their own greed, and sadistic thrills.
  • Enemy Civil War: The only reason Feinan has a chance at all, is that the various invading extra-planar foes loathe each other with undying passion, and usually fight each other to the death if they meet in force, though they can occasionally agree on temporary Enemy Mine situations. Even the factions suffer from infighting too.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: The gods loathe the inhabitants of Feinan, not for anything they've done, but simply for being alive on the plane that they want for themselves, and resisting their sadistic butchery? Oh, that's simply compounding the "sin."
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: The story starts with Marvin transmigrating into an 11-year-old boy, with the same name, on his death-bed, and by the time he reaches 13, can go toe-to-toe with gods even killing a few of them.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Feinan is a harsh place. None of the heroes of the story can afford to show mercy to their enemies. Marvin's so brutal, even the most hardened of them can only go "Glad He's On Our Side."
  • Jerkass Gods: The most benevolent gods in the series are entirely indifferent to the lives of the people on the plane of Feinan. The rest want to trample them like bugs and enslave the survivors.
  • Left Hanging: Even the author is not happy with the ending, as quite a few serious plot threads are left unresolved.
  • Light Is Not Good: The gods, at best, only see people as Human Resources, and suck the faith out of them, to power themselves. Their angels are extremely arrogant and "descend" by going into a nursery, murdering newborns by the hundreds in the process, causing them to pop one by one until a suitable host is found, and then happily exploding the rest.
  • Moral Myopia: All the antagonists, without exception, engage in every kind of atrocity imaginable, even some that come from clearly deranged minds, yet anyone trying to stop them, or gods forbid, defend themselves, and they see that as a "provocation."
  • Never My Fault: The antagonists always, without exception, blame Marvin either for their own villainy, or the consequences, even when it's one of their own that goes Evil Is Not a Toy and unleashes the Sealed Evil in a Can.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: What's good for Marvin and his allies is good, and what isn't is evil. Feinan is such a World of Jerkass that he's 100% correct.
  • Sudden Game Interface: Marvin goes to bed one night, wakes up in Feinan with an interface exactly like the VR game he's fond of playing, and he alone has that ability.
  • World of Jerkass: To highlight just how harsh Feinan is, the most benevolent faction is composed entirely of The Legions of Hell, literally, though not the demons of the Abyss, they're just meatheads who rampage For the Evulz.
