Allen Crawford is a misanthropic wizard, living in a mansion deep in the woods. His terrifying appearance and magic powers have earned the title of "Demon Lord" from the locals. One day he discovered a girl named Charlotte collapsed outside of his mansion. Taking her in, he discovered she is a noblewoman who has been framed for a litany of crimes and forced to flee from her home country. Her story strikes a chord with him, bringing up memories of his own experiences with betrayal. Seeing how sad and pitiful her life is gives Allen a new mission in life; to teach her how to be naughty. Thus begins Allen's quest to show her all of life’s simple pleasures and build up her confidence.

Contains examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: When Charlotte goes into town by herself and starts wandering towards a rougher area controlled by an "adventuring party" (i.e. a street gang), he thrashes them and threatens worse if they don't treat Charlotte nicely. He then proceeds to do that to every other such party in town. Charlotte's kind treatment to the obviously injured party members convinces them all to go straight, thereby making the entire town much safer. Allen was a bit surprised when he learned of this.
  • Atrocious Alias: Allen hates being called the "Demon Lord"...because he considers it a rank down from his previous nickname, "Great Demon Lord''.
  • Bad Liar: Charlotte has so many tells (such as pausing, deliberately looking away, and talking in a different tone) when she tells even white lies that Allen notes that he doesn't need to be a Living Lie Detector to tell when she's lying.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When told by Eruca that there is trouble involving Charlotte's younger half-sister Natalia at magic academy, Allen and Charlotte are shown a scene of Natalia surrounded menacingly by several students only for Natalia to beat them down and start berating them for getting her lunch order wrong, at which point its reveal that Nathalia isn't in trouble, she become trouble.
  • Bastard Angst: Charlotte is the illegitimate daughter of Duke, a fact that caused her no end of grief while she lived among his household.
  • Berserk Button: Attempting to harm Charlotte in any way is a quick way to set Allen off. When he and Charlotte are accosted by two thugs, Allen holds off from fighting to fulfill an early promise to Charlotte...until they start making passes at her. Allen actually has Eruca hold off from investigating Duke house that Charlotte was a part and the prince that framed her right away, because he knows he might not be able to control himself if he learns the full extent of Charlotte’s abuse.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Allen and Charlotte let of one after Dorothea tells them that her condition for selling her mansion is for them to flirt with each other in front of her.
  • Black Magician Girl: Eruca, Allen's sister, hits pretty much all of all of the checkboxes- she's a very powerful mage (second only to Allen himself in the series), younger and mildly bratty, and very much a Genki Girl. The main differences being that she dresses on the skimpy side (she's more or less in a Battle Bikini with the additions of a microskirt and a cape) and that she's in a fantasy Rom Com instead of of an action-focused series.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Unlike Allen, who is oblivious due to unfamiliarity with romance, it's pretty obvious that Charlotte is aware of her growing fondness towards Allen, but she's afraid to express it. Whether it's due to feeling unworthy, feeling indebted, trauma from her previous betrothal, some other issue, or a combination of any of these is yet unclear.
  • Cat Girl: Miacha, the local mail carrier for Allen. She's initially one of the only people Allen would interact with at all, and as such is the first to learn he's harboring Charlotte. Outside of her ears, tail, and paw-like hands, she's not very feline, though - the only cat-like personality trait she's shown is that she's a bit curious (particularly about Allen and Charlotte's relationship).
  • Designated Villainess: In universe, and almost to the point of parody. Charlotte has NO qualities of an otome-game villainess; she is humble, hates no-one, and animals love her.
  • Double Entendre: Allen and Charlotte's tendency to refer to their activities as "naughty" tends to give people some…interesting ideas when they hear about it the first time.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: In the anime, a Hell Capybara makes several background appearances before its proper introduction in episode 6. Turns out that it was following Charlotte around.
  • Evolving Credits: In the anime, as the main characters are properly introduced, their faces are added at the end of the opening credits.
  • Extreme Doormat: Charlotte’s Nice Girl tendencies and her own abysmal self-confidence have her start out as one of these. She has difficulty accepting gifts from others and accepting kindness, and can’t feel any resentment towards her family or the prince she was engaged to, despite all the abuse they put her through.
  • Fluffy Tamer: When going to a monster zoo Charlotte immediately befriends ever monster in the petting zoo section. It turns out she has an innate talent as a monster tamer and her affinity for it is so strong she can casually communicate with legendary monsters mere minutes after learning she has the ability.
  • Frame-Up: The reason Charlotte is a fugitive is that she's been accused of conspiring to murder her former fiancé, the Prince. Allen, using his Living Lie Detector abilities and simple logic, quickly deduces this is the case, and on his agenda is to figure out who precisely was a part of this and why.

  • Grew a Spine: Thanks to Allen's influence, Charlotte has grown much more confident and actively begins pursuing her own interests rather than just following the plans he lays out. This ultimately culminates in her throwing a spell at Allen and giving him a stern talking after he goes overboard defending her…again.
  • Happily Adopted: Allen lost his parents when he was young and was adopted into the Crawford family. Despite his antisocial personality he's on good terms with them, even if he spends most of his time away from home.
  • Hit Me, Dammit!: One of Allen’s early lessons on naughtiness is attempting to get Charlotte to punch pictures of her tormentors. When that doesn’t work he attempts to get Charlotte to punch him, then resorts to magic to get her to do so.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Initially, Charlotte's idea of having fun is counting all the grains in a wooden floor. This is what convinced Allen to start teaching her how to be naughty.
  • Killer Rabbit: Hell Capybaras. They don’t look that much different from regular capybaras, but apparently are capable of destroying mountains when they get hungry.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In episode 12 of the anime, Miacha appears at the mid-point and Allen casually mentions that he hasn't seen her since episode 6.
  • Living Lie Detector: Allen is very good at telling when are people lying. He’s immediately able to tell that Charlotte is being truthful about her innocence.
  • Mummy Wrap: In Episode 8 (Chapter 37 in manga), Dorothea has been fully wrapped up in ropes from neck to toe as soon as she's been found by Yor. She also tried to escape by crawling like a worm, but ended up futile.
  • Nice Girl: Charlotte is s genuinely nice and honest person, something that Allen says is an absolute rarity to find nowadays.
  • Oblivious to Love: Downplayed. While Allen does find himself falling for Charlotte his misanthropic tendencies prevent him from properly identifying his feelings as love. He does eventually figure this out, but decides to hide it as Charlotte’s Extreme Doormat tendencies could cause her to feel pressured to reciprocate his feelings even if she doesn’t feel the same way, and the ensuing fallout could ruin all the progress she’s made.
  • Poke the Poodle: Allen's lessons in "naughtiness" have so far amounted to eating sweets before bed, and punching pictures of people who have wronged Charlotte.
  • Sadist Teacher: During his brief stint as a teacher, Allen enjoyed giving his students sadistic training programs and had a bad habit of beating up students who were acting cheeky. He also beat up the other teachers after he caught them badmouthing him, which is why he had to quit.
  • Scars Are Forever: Subverted. When Allen discovers that Charlotte’s back is covered with whip scars he immediately heals them. However the fact that he was able to heal them so easily reveals that she’s never actually received any proper medical attention before this.
  • Shipper on Deck: Pretty much as soon as they're introduced, Eruca and Maicha start contriving (and once they meet, conspiring) to make Allen and Charlotte get a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Stop, or I Shoot Myself!: When Charlotte is reluctant to accept his offer of being his maid, Allen places a death curse on himself to convince her to accept. He threatens to several more times, although Charlotte usually caves to the threat before he can. Played for Laughs when going to the baths (read: pool) together, when Allen threatens himself with this to keep from staring at Charlotte in a bathing suit too much... only to actually see her and realize the sight of her was too much and feel like he just died from her beauty.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Gosetsu has a deep masculine voice which especially jarring when they’re revealed to be female and they keep that voice in their human form.
