Funny / Journey Beyond Sodor

Go To

  • The beginning is comedy gold. To start off, Thomas remarks that it's such a wonderful day he wants to burst into song—cue James literally sliding into frame by switching onto Thomas' track, forcing him to stop. And beginning the first musical number while he's at it.
    • The lyrics show off James in all his egotistical glory.
James: Somebody has to be the favorite,
The one that everybody wants to see!
Somebody has to be better than the rest,
Somebody has to be so good that they're the best!
Somebody has to be the favorite,
      Somebody has to be me!
    • Thomas indignantly enters the station after James and needles him for claiming he's everyone's favorite when he's not, and for singing a song when Thomas was about to. James promptly calls for the entire station to be quiet so they can hear Thomas sing, leaving the woefully unprepared tank engine at a loss for words. And when Thomas finally gets ready to sing? James promptly blows his whistle and continues his song!
    • When an even more indignant Thomas calls out James again, James points out he gets all the best jobs, pointing out Thomas will be collecting pigs next, while he will be "transporting beautiful music". In the very next scene, Thomas is doing just that...and can only stare speechlessly when James passes by with a coach transporting a musical ensemble. And to add insult to injury, the ensemble is playing the very song James was playing!
  • The trucks have some amusing snark to Thomas enthusiasm and lack of sense of direction. Case in point, let's all say it...
  • Beresford's introduction and musical number, "Who's Thomas?". ALL OF IT.
    • At the beginning of the scene, Beresford blocks Thomas' line for seemingly no apparent reason with a ship. After Thomas' first self-introduction, Beresford lifts up the ship—only to drop it right in front of Thomas again within seconds. Naturally, Thomas is not amused.
    • Thomas' method of getting away from Beresford, along with the last verse of the song:
      Thomas: That's it!
      I'm Thomas, I'm Thomas!
But you've never heard of Thomas!
Beresford: No, I've never heard of Thomas!
Thomas: But that's my name, it's true!
      (Thomas starts backing up)
      Thomas: I'm Thomas! I'm Thomas!
      Beresford: Yes?
Thomas: And if you've never heard of me,
Then when I said I was Thomas,
I was telling you something new.
      Beresford: Something new?!
(Thomas starts traveling down the line directly below Beresford, which is unblocked.)
Thomas: And having told you that, I think we're through!
    • Beresford tries to stop Thomas, but only ends up hitting himself in the face with his own hook.
    • This line, coupled with the camera cutting to various shots of Beresford's face from different angles:
Beresford: Thomas? Who's Thomas? I've never heard of Thomas! Nor me! I know! You're me! That's true! I'm talking to myself! (his eyes are crossed on the last one)
    • Beresford attempts to end a verse on a high note, only to get horrendous voice cracks that leaves Thomas cringing and the trucks bewildered.
    • The trucks repeatedly interrupt the song to gleefully remind the audience Thomas is lost. The third time, it becomes utterly ridiculous as they run through a bunch of crossing tracks, barely managing to not hit each other, and then spin around in place. All while singing, of course.
  • Merlin enters the Experimental Engines' musical number by eagerly calling out that he can do something, announcing his catchphrase loudly, and then activating his stealth...except the stealth doesn't work and he is blissfully unaware, leaving Thomas staring at Merlin with a confused expression as he sings about his invisibility.
  • Merlin's lookout face. He looks angry.
  • When Thomas has to pass Beresford a second time, the crane isn't having it and picks up Thomas with his hook. And Thomas' attempts to persuade Beresford to let him go just result in Beresford dropping him suddenly, but only far enough so he's still suspended just above the ground.
  • Early into the film, Frankie and Hurricane sing a Villain Song to get Thomas to work with them at the Steel Works. Later, they try and sing it to James. James' facial expressions show he is clearly 110% done with everything going on. Then Hurricane misses a line when James speeds ahead of them before finally cutting the whole song off.
James: Alright, ALRIGHT! This is all VERY entertaining... But WHERE'S THOMAS?
  • Henry spends the whole movie at the Steamworks after he ends up derailing off the viaduct. Throughout the special his repairs keep getting delayed. Finally, at the very end, after Thomas and James arrive back on Sodor and finish the closing song, Henry arrives at the Tidmoth Sheds and says the final line of the special that is just the icing on the cake (possibly Breaking the Fourth Wall).
    Henry: What did I miss?
