Fridge Brilliance

  • Anybodys and Tony hugging at the dance gets a moment of Fridge Heartwarming when you remember that Tony's on parole and isn't supposed to go to social events like this. This may well have the first time they saw each other since Tony got locked up. No wonder they were so glad to see each other.
  • Bernardo setting Chino up with María makes even more sense when you remember he won't let Chino join the Sharks. Of course Bernardo doesn't want his baby sister dating a gangster!
  • Tony does not seem to know Bernardo and is only vaguely familiar with the conflict between the Jets and the Sharks. It's likely that things only escalated while he was in prison, and he knows enough to stay out of the way.
  • The addition of Riff buying a gun from the black market dealer in this adaptation makes the ending even more tragic when it's that very same gun Chino uses to kill Tony. Instead of being used against the Sharks like Riff intended to, it ends up only being used to murder a former Jet and his best friend.
  • Anita goes through all five stages of grief during "A Boy Like That/I Have A Love."
    1. Denial: She had already gone through this when she went to the police station to identify Bernardo.
    2. Anger: Seeing Tony climbing out of María's bedroom window triggers this stage.
    3. Bargaining: Anita tries bargaining once María starts her portion of the song.
    4. Depression: María singing about her love for Tony, despite what he's done, completely breaks Anita.
    5. Acceptance: She finally closes the song accepting María's love, while still telling her she'd have to leave with Tony.
  • As a transgender man who's already been assaulted by one of the Jets—A-Rab brags about having "pantsed her once note "—it's no wonder that Anybodys was sincerely concerned for Anita's safety and warned her to leave Doc's.

Fridge Horror

  • At the end of "Tonight (Quintet)," Maria is seen getting off the subway on her way to work. Once the rumble is over, we see that she and the other cleaning ladies are still getting changed and putting away their valuables. That means she was singing "I Feel Pretty"...while the rumble was still happening.
  • In both the original musical and the 1961 film, both Tony and María fail to see Chino until he shoots Tony and it's too late. This time around, María actually sees Chino coming up behind Tony and screams, "No!" just before he pulls the trigger. This actually makes the ending here even worse because it implies that María may end up dealing with Survivor Guilt for the rest of her life, perhaps convincing herself that she should have taken the bullet for Tony.
  • The moment the policemen leave the station chasing after Anybodys, leaving behind several Jets and a female arrestee (a hooker?), the lady gets up from her bench and locks herself in a holding cell, keeping the key for the duration of "Gee, Officer Krupke". She most likely did that because she assumed the boys would harass or molest her in the absence of the cops, and she thought it was the most natural thing in the world and like she has to face those things everyday (which she most likely does!)
  • Something about the tearful way Graziella pleads for the boys to leave Anita alone makes one wonder if she herself has been raped or assaulted.
  • What's gonna happen to Maria? Her brother and lover are both dead, her friend is probably gonna go to jail, and her best friend is going back to Puerto Rico because of everything, and she will lose her home soon. That is a lot to go through. Not mention she doesn't seem to have any family and only recently arrived in the US. Poor girl.
    • Not to mention that things will be strained between her and Anita once she finds out about her lie to the Jets, and Anita herself might want nothing more to do with María because of what happened at the store. Or even worse - Anita might be horrified when she hears about what happened and could be destroyed with even more guilt over it.
    • She still has Bernardo's friends and Valentina to turn to for help, so she should be able to manage.
  • Anybodys is probably going to feel Survivor's Guilt over Tony's death.
