The term "midnight essence" is used multiple times to describe the monsters born from the Midnight Sea. The ties together a long-standing mystery from The Stormlight Archive, where in one of Dalinar's visions he encountered a strange smoke-like monster that had nothing to do with the world's magic system, and which the Knights explained was not a Voidbringer. Now the question is just where Odium got his hands on a Midnight Aether to spawn spores—and is it still functional in the modern day?
It is still functional, and is spawned by an Unmade named Re-Shephir the Midnight Mother. But that, as they say, just raises further questions.
