Fridge Brilliance

  • Alan coming out as gay casts so much new light on his relationship with Todd, which was always strained by the fact Todd was gay and Alan was shown to not always be comfortable with how to address it. Rather than struggling with bigotry and accepting his son, it makes Alan's unease about his son's sexuality instead come from the fact he was repressing his own sexuality and wasn't sure how to process it, and his discomfort was due to that.
  • The sequence with Barry and Wally that is full of Continuity Snarl and Unintentionally Unsympathetic makes unfortunately odd sense given their characters. Even though Wally is superior to Barry in power and feats, never mind their track recordnote , and they were both "The Flash", but a major point of Wally's character is he has cripplingly low self-esteem which is exasperated by Barry's presence and has worsened thanks to his recent suffering, while Barry has developed some Bitch in Sheep's Clothing It's All About Me tendencies which contribute to the Unintentionally Unsympathetic problems. It is strangely in-character for Barry to patronisingly give Wally "permission" to be the sole Flash and "fill in his boots", while Wally doesn't correct him because he's lost faith in himself after everything recently.
  • Several costume changes that are observable in the characters, seem to make them look more like their Post Crisis selves, even if some blend it with their newer looks. Black Canary is shown in Justice League to be wearing a black leotard again rather than Civvie Spandex, Barbara looks Older and Wiser as Oracle, and Roy ditches his trucker hat. This all strangely makes sense as the timeline has been merged, so they are all a Composite Character of their Pre Crisis, Post Crisis, and Post Flashpoint selves; though it was about ten years real time, this amounts to maybe two-three years in-universe, and is only a tiny percentage of their combined history. Roy isn't wearing the hat because the Roy who wore that hat is only a tiny fragment of the character he is now, who is now the Roy Harper who's existed since the 40s. Black Canary is wearing the leotard because it's what she wore for the bulk of her life, and is now the seasoned fighter she once was so is now likely dressing more ready for combat. Barbara looks Older and Wiser because she is as she is no longer de-aged as she was after Flashpoint, who was also drawn much smaller and youthful due to being 'Batgirl', a role a that she had outgrown previously.
    • One big subversion to this trend is Huntress, who is wearing a new look that is a composite of her Rebirth look and her pre-Flashpoint costume (that also blends elements of her recent cinematic look). But, this makes odd sense as Helena Bertinelli isn't as old a character as the others, being she was introduced in 1989 and cycled through many costumes during the time between then and Flashpoint. "Post-Flashpoint Helena" is a much bigger part of her combined character, whereas the others, it's basically a small snippet of their new combined history. As even pre-Flashpoint Helena didn't have a suit that lasted more than seven yearsnote , the Rebirth suit (which lasted six) is actually a significant portion of her history and would be about as equal to her as any other look she had.
    • Another subversion is Wally West, who is alternating between his 90s suit and his Rebirth suit in promotional material. Unlike the others, Wally was never divided by the timeline changes, and other than briefly forgetting about his kids so that he could be tortured by their memory later, was always the same person with full memories, so he's not had anything restored by the timeline restoration. His Rebirth look was one he formed largely because he was trying to not step on Barry's toes, but it also reflected that he wasn't quite himself due to what he'd lost. Wally is still struggling to regain his confidence after everything that happened, which can be symbolised by his apparent unease to wear his classic "Flash" suit.
  • However you feel about Lian Harper's appearance in Catwoman, this troper noticed some rather interesting connections to her missing past involving her civilian attire. People noticed the similar taste in hats much like her dad, but they didn't notice the fishnet leggings that are the signature of Black Canary. Her faded red hoodie that she wears under her plaid shirt even alludes to the sleeveless one that Lian wore as a child in this art. Even as Cheshire Cat, her weapon choice of twin batons call to mind Nightwing's escrima sticks. Even with amnesia, Lian is still being influenced by the people that mattered to her as a child.

Fridge Logic

  • Scarecrow's new costume is intimidating and all, but it must be really bad going to the bathroom.
