Spin is a Disney Channel Original Movie that came out August 13, 2021. It's notable for being the first DCOM to star an Indian American as the main protagonist.

The movie focuses on Rhea Kumar (played by newcomer Avantika), an Indian American teen and aspiring DJ, who discovers her passion for creating DJ mixes which blend her South Asian and American cultures and express herself. After falling for the town's local DJ Max which reignites her dream, and when her friends sign her up for an upcoming DJ competition Battle of the Beatmasters, Rhea must find the courage to rediscover her true inner talent.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Was Max using Rhea from the moment they started working together or did he only decide to betray her after his own improvement as a DJ started to go to his head? The film's answer seems to be that it doesn't matter, because his betrayal of her was wrong either way.
  • Broken Pedestal: Rhea stops being friends with Max when he takes all the credit for the song they wrote together at the Festival of Color.
  • Missing Mom: Rhea's mother passed away 7 years prior to the film, when Rhea was eight.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Nani. She understands Rhea's passion for being a DJ and lets her off the hook when her friends enter her into Battle of the Beatmasters.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: All of the trailers completely spoil the Battle of the Beatmasters sequence, as well as Rhea's performance.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rhea's grandmother toward her throughout the movie.
  • You Are Grounded!: When Arvind catches Rhea sneaking out of her job to go to the Festival of Color, he grounds her for two months.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: Keila De Almeida plays a younger Rhea in a flashback.
